John Hollinger decided to follow me on Twitter today despite that, outside of gently trolling him during the Virginia, all of my tweets today were about how much I disliked Chad Ford's writing. I wonder if there's a connection.

I liked the show when it was on like a decade ago, but I just was looking through popular fanfiction and saw that... strange fact about the Kim Possible fandom consumption patterns.

By MambaCollege ball is worse than watching pickup these days.
They really need to reduce the shot clock and extend the three point line.
TRUTH
Shot clock in NCAA is excruciating!!!! This post was gonna be my only contribution in the NCAA topic, but I was afraid it would be perceived as trolling.

By jjasperGood. With question marks over TJones/Dwight, Houston ain't doing shit in the playoffs this season. Might as well try winning something. I wonder if there's a connection.I was just explaining to one of my coworkers who doesn't really follow basketball why PER is such a poor statistic... he thought it was amusing that Hollinger put his name on it.
By diehardPER is ok as long as you understand what it values so much.It does nothing terribly useful... the level of granularity it's capable of in terms of actually separating out talent from noise is such that anyone who somewhat follows the league will be able to guess it most of the time. You could replace it with MPG in these discussions and it wouldn't make much of a difference.
Since the Michael Garbage Williams trade:
Bucks: 4-12
76ers: 5-11
The 76ers got a top 7 pick for this guy.
I don't know, I think some linear summation of box-score stats is okay to have. PER doesn't tell you much about how the player is impacting his team (because the weights for volume scoring make no sense and PER has no chance of judging defense), but it does seem to give a decent way of giving a quick summary of how rare or impressive (or unimpressive) the player's box-score stats are per minute. It's not really useful in analysis, but it's kind of interesting to look at.
It was the first majorly promoted catch-all advanced stat so it kind of needed to produce similar results to what casual fans would expect. If Hollinger had created something like RPM, which rated Ben Wallace and AK47 as better than 2006 Kobe due to defense, I don't think catch-all stats would have gained as much traction as quickly.

It's not really useful in analysis, but it's kind of interesting to look at.I understand all that... but as you said, it's a poor statistic for actual analysis, and I see it used all the time as a proxy for player value (including here on SLAENT). And it's exacerbated by things like the trade machine. I'm skeptical that even a well-motivated catchall advanced stat can ever be used the way people appear to want to use PER.

(Incidentally, I just searched for RPM here and I think you are the only person here who has ever even mentioned it except to make fun of it. Not sure if that proves your point or mine).

Bill Simmons had this to say about RPM the other day in a footnote:
"I absolutely detest the new Real Plus-Minus stat, but included it just so I could throw in a footnote saying that I absolutely detest the new Real Plus-Minus stat. This is the John From Cincinnati of advanced NBA stats. It’s like a bunch of nerds just kept throwing NBA numbers into some giant stat-maker engine until it churned out results that looked relatively close to a list of the best players in the league … only they couldn’t fix the glitch that throws players like Cody Zeller into the top 20 while sticking Marc Gasol 20 spots lower. The better your bench is, the worse you look in Real Plus-Minus. Stupid stat. Go away."
Lest anybody ever question Bill Simmons' worth to sports commentary, this led me to discover John From Cincinatti, which took me down a youtube hole that ultimately culminated in watching the entirety of this scene:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyKoqcxfvqo
Life is different for me now.
RPM has been around forever in various forms and it's literally the only NBA stat right now (other than FG% allowed at the rim) that can somewhat judge defense. Every NBA nerd uses it only because it's the only stat that can kind of judge defense. Every other stat is worthless in that respect. And defense is half of the game. If, on average, a team is much better defensively with you on the court, controlling for the defensive performance of your teammates, then you, on average, you probably are a pretty good defensive player.
