By Grizzled Cola Go To PostSo ive played over 1800 games of this fifa and similar ones, and to be fair last years was trash too
There is actual scripting in the game, this is coming from someone who gets elite 1 in weekend league, has been top 40 on pc a few occasions, who knows how to exploit the game. The game at its fundamental core is not a football game, its a game of exploitation and also luck, now you can play it like a football game and its very fun for me if im playing someone who isnt very good because you can dance on them, you can use the skill moves, you can create fun goals and chances, but thats not how you win. The core issue is when you know how to play the game, the best way to win is to play anti football and hope to the gods fifa hasnt fixed your keeper, because it will, go and watch any high level twitch stream and you will see no-one takes a shot that isnt from about 3 yards out, because there is simply no point, the only semi reliable way to score is low driven under the keeper, but even then sometimes you wont. The best way to play the game is to pass the ball around and because player switching is so bad there isnt much you can actually do about it, which is why you will see good players pass the ball around their back four at 1-0, because theres nothing you can do, or create chances with 30+ pass combinations looking for that one player to make an ai run 3 yards from goal.
Add into this the fact that they add in new animations that severely impact the game and dont compensate for the fact that, without any fault of your own, zero fault, a goal can be scored against you. Now one goal in weekend league at the higher levels is enough to win the game, so imagine the guy you are playing against scores a goal because your keeper kicked it into his own net, your defender ai literally stops moving, it bounces off 3-4 people or, which happens os often it hurts, your opponent continually nutmegs your players with passes. After he scores he goes to park the bus and plays it around his back four.
This is to the point where its widely accept and regarded as getting "fifa'd" because there is nothing you can do about being nutmegged or the ai shafting you, literally nothing. You can also have games where your keeper doesnt make a save but his keeper makes 20-25, I know it sounds stupid and we should "Get better at shooting", but the truth is that in order to guarantee goals you have to play a certain way and still hope you dont get fucked over.
ok i don't disagree with any of this actually. i just throw all of that in the catchall "jank" folder so that's what i meant about figuring out what exploits work year to year. good to know that people who actually deep dive the game feel the same way about it that i do.
this year is really the first year i've ever really taken a look at the high level play and i was shocked at how dull and risk averse it was. but i get it has to be that way to compensate for the game itself. i just cant bother to play that way because it isn't all that fun.
my friends arent that good so i mainly just play for golazos on them. im often surprised to hear that they still don't know about certain buttons even though they've been playing it about as long as i have. like last night i played my roommate and he had a button queued up to shoot, but by the time kane got to it he was way out of position. i told him he should've pump faked and turned, or did a super cancel. he said a super cancel isn't a thing . so i wish there was an actual comprehensive in-game tutorial. none of them know how to ground cross and i do it all the fucking time. i never stopped to consider how unintuitive the game can be.
the other great thing about playing IRL is when you play someone that actually knows what they're doing, and they do that super defensive conservative mess you can just hit them

Apparently we are undecided, id send him there til Jan with an option to return, he needs games, im not convinced by him and I dont think giving him very odd out of position appearances is helping, would like to see him have a run somewhere.
send him. especially if we get Aurier.

I haven't bought FIFA the last 2 years. The last FIFA I had was 16 and I was top 1000 at one point, the new FIFA's are so much more annoying.

I feel a little sympathy for them because what they are trying to do is make a sports game an esport, but what is an esport? Its people finding the most efficient ways to break a game, there is absolutely no reason for anyone trying to win to play this like a football game and I doubt you could create a football game where playing it like a football game is the best way to win. So in that sense, they are fighting a losing battle, there will always be ai exploits, so on that end its frustrating but there we are.
I think I could live with the game being exploitable if not for it being so scripted.

I bet you I could pick up Madden 18 right now and destroy someone and all I would be doing is picking the same couple plays over and over again, calling hot routes and playing zone QB spy defense(domino will know what all this means)
also the AI switchoffs are highkey the most infuriating thing for me. its like they forgot to program a natural reaction to a ricochet or the ball going off course.
you can often feel when you're about to get scored on even when you have numbers and a good defensive position. especially if you watch the whole screen. thats probably the one thing i realized most people dont do is watch the entire screen. my friends scream offsides constantly cause i've either passed it to someone who wasn't on the screen because i knew where they'd be. or because i watched my striker/winger make a linebreaking run and time the pass to get him like 10 yds clear.

One day I also started receiving charges for PPV on my phone bill for that stupid online Claro service. It was an endless list of Barbie and Adam Sandler movies. Who the fuck watches Pixels 7 fucking times? Turns out the only thing they needed to register and charge it to my landline was my name and phone number because it's an online service. Took me like 3 months to get refunded on that garbage.

i want to believe they can. they just have no incentive to and probably dont have the time with the yearly schedule. the scripting is better for the bottom line. i see it first hand just playing with my friends when they do manage to beat me. it keeps them hooked.
yeah idfw madden too much (so boring to me, gimme NCAA anyday) but you can still get by on like madden 07 tactics against most people.

Did I ever tell you when I was going to visit Claro headquarters in Brazil for work and test their mobile network?
Long story short (and I'm sure there's something about generalisation in there), our project manager went instead, to Rio, got pulled outside of the hotel and driven to an atm to empty his cc with a gun to his head. He survived obviously. Not sure about the network coverage test though..
Fifa has always been trash, i've got a friend who was desperate to win the rank 1 clubs league trophy but could never do it, he must have tried for over half a year. The group he played with tried to play it like a game of football but at the highest level you can't do that you have to game the Fifa system. I joined in, figured out the exploits and got him the trophy on our second attempt, boring as hell, even worse than watching a Pep team trying to defend. Play PES or go home.

By domino Go To Postalso the AI switchoffs are highkey the most infuriating thing for me. its like they forgot to program a natural reaction to a ricochet or the ball going off course. One of the huge exploits people dont know about player switching is how it chooses the CB that comes towards an attacker, the way you exploit this is by using wide men and having them come inside from say midway into your opponents half, its part the reason counter attacks are stupid. If you come in at a 45 degree angle towards the goal from wide against two cbs what will often happen is the closest CB will be in a bad position to tackle because the wide player is quick and there is no good tackle animation for tackling someone side on, so its usually pointless. What you want to do is select your other CB who is behind the closest one and cut off the run being made by the 2nd man, but you cant, rarely ever with manual switching and a rookie mistake is to try to do it by auto switching. The 2nd CB is drawn to the player on the ball never to the runner.

What ends up happening 9/10 is that the 2nd man running for the through ball will run past your CB which you cant switch to and is put through on goal, and because you cant switch to him because the ai is shit tier, there is nothing you can do about it.

He likes football but doesn't like the way the game is going, which is fair enough. The focus around football is moving further and further away from what actually happens on the pitch, and despite the moaning about it, its pretty much impossible not to go with the current.
At least Ken is still a good listen though, whatever he's talking about. Glendennig might as well just run a 4-line match report through a text-to-speech app for all he brings to FW.

Barry I remember them reading out a message live asking him what he does on the show and why he never gives detailed match reports and he seemed confused.

Don't suppose anyone here actually pays for any Opta stats product or the Statsbomb products?
