Former New York Knick Anthony Mason died early Saturday morning, weeks after he was taken to an area hospital with heart troubles, a team spokesman confirmed. Mason was 48 years old.

Mason had reportedly been struggling with heart problems in recent weeks. Peter Vecsey, a former New York Post columnist, wrote earlier in February that Mason suffered a heart attack after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure. The complications required multiple surgeries, according Vecsey.

It was before my time, so I've only seen him in documentaries. I don't think that first championship would have meant as much if the Rockets didn't have a worthy opponent. Mason and the Knicks were certainly that. RIP.
