Like the current state of the Syrian war, it's so fucking confusing I have no idea what the fuck is going on.
YGP, ISIS, Russians, SAA, Hezbollah, SDF, PKK, Iran, USA, TAF + supporting coalition members. There are so many complex levels to this conflict, it just doesn't make any sense anymore, even for someone that's been following it from day one. Convinced this is per design.
Just today the USA warned the Syrian government not to use chemical weapons again, such a weird thing to say when the last time the Syrian government used chemical weapons the USA did nothing. I mean, why bother beating the drums again?

BBC Iplayer currently has two documentaries looking at the sexualisation of youth in Japan.
One is about idols - had to stop 5 minutes in - some surreal shit.
Probably gong to start with the Stacey Dooley one.

i have watched an anime where i thought it was an uncle and (6-7 year old) niece relationship, further on it got into some fucked up romantic relationship between them
^please don't tell me youre talking about Usagi Drop. There's absolutely nothing sexual about their relationship.
I think the sexualizing of idols in Japan is a lot deeper than what most people are keen to pass it off as. It's not pedophilia.
I think it stems partly from work culture. Adults in Japan pretty openly recognize that your life is only fun for the first 18-20 years. Once youre an adult and you're working and you start showing the exhaustion of bearing society's weight, you're kind of shuttled into an extremely unbalanced work-life schedule. The innocence of youth is highly attractive not just because of physical attraction (this isn't unique to Japan—teenagers are sexualized all over the world), its because young people still have a glow that's hasn't been snuffed out by 25 hours of overtime per week.
The character of maids, idols, and these teenage girls that are so popular isnt "check out this sexy puss, don't you want a piece?" It's "I know you're exhausted ^^ come hang out with me at my cafe!! ^^ I'll always make you smile"
Idols aren't allowed to have boyfriends because they're married to their fans. They don't even have to be physically beautiful or have nice bodies. A lot of them aren't. They just have to have that cheerful glow. A lot of songs are like "Woow I'm so exhausted from my summer homework. I just wanna go watch fireworks and have a snow cone at a summer festival!!" You can just sing about high school life, and that's a significant draw.
Its a weird culture. And it's exacerbated by the fact that the Japanese are incapable of doing anything in moderation. It's either balls deep or not in at all.

As disgusted as I am by Japanese idol culture, I think it's by far better than Korea where the girls have to be perfect in every way.
Also BBC in particular seems unwilling to judge by any yard stick but British culture and trying to get cheap shock value. I'm not sure if this is just something that's common with English media or if it's the BBC in particular.
There was a really wonderful documentary about host clubs in Japan. Early on they established with a leading host what the goal is, how they sell the host club experience. A super popular host said (paraphrasing) "Its not about love, though my customers say they want to marry me. They don't actually want to marry me. I'm just selling them a fantasy, where they can come drink and be hit on by guys who know how to be flirtatious and gentlemanly. If I asked them to marry me inside the club they'd say yes, because that's part of the fantasy. Outside the club they know better."
The (English) interviewer was just constantly baiting love and sex questions. Over and over and over. Do you ever have sex with your customers? How many customers have you had sex with? Do your customers pay you for sex? Are you a sex worker? How many women do you have sex with every month? Where does love come into this? Do you believe in love? Are you incapable of love?
The doc was great because the customers and hosts they interviewed were very candid and had interesting things to say. But everyone was getting really tired of the interviewer's smug high-horse attitude. He didn't seem interested in learning anything about a unique and foreign culture, you could tell he was fishing for a story like "IN JAPAN, LOVE IS DEAD. WOMEN ONLY PAY FOR SEX NOW."
Even the Japanese woman he had translating his questions was re-wording them to be less smug, and gradually she got tired of the same shock-bait questions. I trust places like Vice to put a spotlight on weird, unfamiliar cultures and let you see for yourself both the appeal and the warts. But in my experience with things BBC-produced, it seems like they're intent on making your moral judgment for you, before you even know what the whole picture looks like.

Japanese culture in general seems to have a huge gap from dignified and historically significant to just flat immature and embarrassing.
By mos6142 Go To PostI was thiking about the manga version, the kid ends up with the guy, with some bullshit about them beingnot blood related as an excuseThat "not being blood related" also happens in Valkyria Chronicles, and they really hammer it the fuck down. It's like, I get it, and it almost feels like it ends up platonic by chance and despite their best efforts. I avoid anime altogether because I dislike the tropes it falls into even if it's not, you know, sexual, and most anime games for the most part. Also because I can't stand the designs.
also Papa no Iukoto wo Kikinasai,
But I certainly don't see that "glow of youth" aspect in anime games that feature sexualized schoolgirls and maids, especially in genres like "visual novels" and other kinds of sims. They are all about a fucking harem of underage looking girls being sexually available to some down on his luck otaku loser.
That said, I of course give Odd the benefit of the doubt on his first hand experience that I simply don't have, but that probably applies more to real life culture and more "authentic" entertainment than we get here.

Well, I am talking about real life "idols" (like Nogizaka 46, Momoiro Clover, maids in maid cafés, etc), since that's what I thought Bold was talking about with the BBC doc. I'm not talking about anime/manga. My first hand experience is what I know about Japanese culture from living in Japan, however I've watched precious little anime or manga myself, and I don't care to defend shit like what you're talking about. Probably the only defense I'd give to that is that it's fringe media that exists because regulation simply isn't strong enough and doesn't represent a pervasive Japanese mentality. There's manga for and about absolutely eeeeeeeeverything. My wife is a pretty big manga nerd and she always has these really artsy adult-fairytale type books. So my experience with manga is colored by what I see her read, not by what they talk about on NeoGaf and 4chan.
There's definitely a connection between the two, but they're different things. The anime/manga side I know very little about
By Xpike Go To Posttry my best to avoid those kinds of animesWell yeah.

It's like avoiding American TV Series because you dislike gossip girls and Supernatural.
Or hate western books because of 50 shades and Twilight.
As an aside I think it's really funny how important this conversation is to people.
Anime is such a pervasive part of internet culture.
Like when I tell people I live in Japan, I get a lot of people who wanna talk about the whole underage boobies and panties topic. And I'm like "man how do you even know about this shit?" and they're like "well I've seen it in BOKU NO SUKI NA IMOTO NO TITTY WA DEKASUGI DESU". They've always seen a ton of weird niche shit. And to me its like... why are you watching this crap if its so appalling to you? I could never sit through a TV show I actually hated. How are you so well-versed in this subculture you claim to be revolted by?

Definitely true about plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is mega popular all over Asia, probably no place moreso than Korea.
