I'm annoyed at the people who got mad at her dress because it really isn't a big deal. At the same time I can hope that her engagement with our culture goes step beyond, "wow it's such a pretty dress". It looks like she did that and that's great.
But I'd hesitate to use Chinese reactions to claims of cultural appropriation as some sort of barometer for what's okay/not okay tho. Cultural appropriation is about power dynamics and for the Chinese who live in China, they don't experience these dynamics the same way Asian Americans do here in America.
White people do way worse cultural appropriation that no one gives a shit but oh no a white girl wore a dress.
I honestly struggle to see what the big deal is but that might be because the only form of culture people could appropriate from mine is the food. And I want people to have more boiled crawfish in their lives.

One of the biggest aspects people seem to miss when claiming cultural appropriation is that the person has to be claiming ownership. 90% of the people that get blamed for it aren’t actually committing an offense.
