By Fenderputty Go To PostAre weddings more of less expensive culturally between the two spots? Like I know in the US the woman's family traditionally covers the cost, but that isn't standard now a days and other cultures have it the opposite. Shit …. I think Elchelle was saying the guests basically fund the weddings in Argentina. What are the expected sizes? Any expectations on lavishness? It's stupid expensive in AU, but not as stupid as the USA ... mainly because we seem to invite less people.
I felt like western cultures had it all wrong until I read about China's issue with endowments ballooning in size because of the lack of females.
We've capped our AU wedding at 105 people. All told it will set us back just under 30k.
And we're genuinely not going OTT. But there are expectations set that were expected to meet. But food service in AU is generally expensive anyway. And the cost of ours is inline with several others i know of. But both of us having large families means ... nothings cheap.
Korea will be cheaper .. in some regards. Not so in others. We're hoping to get out of both weddings for ~50k.
As for monetary contributions... in AU it changed about 15 - 20 years ago where ... both sets of parents just put in as much as they want / can and the rest is made up by the couple themselves. There's none of the "the brides family normally pays for this, the grooms parents pay for that" stuff. Largely because food service costs here are just super high.
That said, it's extremely common here that (like we're doing) you just ask for money as a gift. You don't bother giving physical gifts anymore. I can't remember a wedding that i've been too where anyone provided a physical gift in the last 20 years. And most people gift you as much as they think their seat at the reception cost. (so about $300 for a couple).

AU sounds similar to the US now. Not many follow the old school tradition. Most people I know had families toss in some money and they came up with the rest. Food is the most expensive item here as well. If you can find good food at a good price chances are the venue won't allow outside vendors lol. Lots of people give money here. People still do the tacky money dance lol. Its up to the couple though. Most people I know do have some sort of registry with material items on them. Some less than others. I've seen quite a few registries that channel funds into the honeymoon. We also have showers here and sometimes engagement parties. Since I usually give something material at a show I'll generally drop another $100+ on the wedding depending.

That's just not true in either country anymore. I'd suggest it's borderline insane to not live together first.
We did an engagement party also.
And yeah, basically our venue (and NONE of the venues we looked at) allowed outside catering. Which was something i was interested in. Purely for cost savings.
I'd never heard of a money dance before having to read up on this stuff a few months ago. Seems dumb. We just has a "wishing well" which is basically just a prettied up locked box people can put their cards in near the entrance to the reception so people don't have to hold onto it all night.

It's all stupidly inflated because of the culture surrounding them. Invitations, photography, a planner lol etc etc.I ain't lying when I say I would do mine over with a Taco truck three kegs of craft beer, 5 cases of wine and 5 each handles of Tequila, Vodka and Bourbon lol with invites sent electronically.
We did ours cheap as fuck too. Totaling 7.5K for everything.
If you want to be depressed about the intentionally restricted supply of Diamonds so Debeers can inflate the cost of your ring, watch this.
i thought it was established that giri is a millionaire
i dont think mine cost more than 12k total. i dont really remember tbh, because it reached a point where i was just blanking out on stuff. i had my guidelines on pricing and if that's what you wanted then cool, im ready to get this over with

That include the ring? Lol
Giri made bank off that temp slaent site.
30K? You could spend that on a ton of longer, more enjoyable vacations with your girl.

Curious if Giri’s price did
By Smokey Go To Postpeople who do it 2-3 times, i feel for themOnly really rich people do that.
By Fenderputty Go To PostCurious if Giri’s price didNo. It didn't include the engagement ring. But did include wedding bands.
I was raised Roman Catholic and the Ceremony will be in a full gothic style cathedral.
And i'm far from a millionaire.
And that's below the average cost for a wedding out in AU. Average cost is ~50k. My cousins last year was well over the 50k mark.
The amount of money we're spending on both weddings would pay for, flat out, the new car i want to get next year. All paid. It's an absurd sum of money.
The best wedding invites are the ones where you're not invited to the actual wedding, just the reception and party.

Family expectations. My own wishes, and Hers.
90% of it is being covered by parents. Money they wouldn't give to us to "just spend as we wish".

When I was a loan officer more than ten years ago the biggest debt most young couples had on their credit report was a wedding they couldn't really afford, but got caught up in the hype of it all and are now tens of thousands of dollars in debt trying to buy a house they also couldn't really afford.
Seen The Big Short? That was me selling these couples garbage, shit, what turned out to be completely dishonest loans because the lender - Countrywide in my case - was betting against them and knew they would be back within no time to refinance and buy into more garbage, or pulling equity out of the house to take a vacation, or renovating the place for the bank to foreclose on within two years. The money was flowing. I felt like an attorney charging billable hours the shit was so out of control. And I didn't even know what I was doing most of the time.
If you can honestly afford it (having everything paid for before you even say I do) or if one of you have parents that have money and are willing to pay for everything (remembering that that's also your money too down the line) then go for it.
Otherwise, it's a huge waste of money for most people for what really amounts to a birthday party with a DJ or band.
That's a down payment on a house or a second house or an investment property or a fucking boat. There's just so much more you can do with $10, $20 or 30k+ in the market to make that one moment not worth it.

Isn't there studies too the more spent on rings and weddings the more likely the marriage fails within something insane like 5 years?

You probably don't hear many people say Renimnbi, more likely to hear RMB. But above those two, the far more common ins the CNY Chinesse Yuan (A yuan is their version of a Cent).
Correction: Dollar.
Cent is Fen.
Yuan is the unit of measurement and RMB is the actual name of the currency (literally translates to People's Currency).

Family and cultural pressure can be huge for weddings. My parent we’re both frugal and had small wedding so they told us they weren’t giving us shit but for a wedding gift promised to give us some some cash for a down payment. We bought FHA with 3.5% down in 2008 and input down the rest lol. (FHA fees are stupid at closing BTW) Her parent gave us a couple grand for the wedding. It’s pretty much the only thing they’ve give us as they’re not well off at all and it was appreciated.
What sucked was that the pressure to have a huge wedding still existed. Heh we even made our center pieces for the tables.

Uhh. It's basically just what every one of my family has done. A very similar style of wedding.
We shopped around A LOT. But not wanting to do a destination wedding (already having people fly in from other states / countries) to make it easy limited us. And any savings made were marginal at best.
This may or may not surprise people, but it's almost as if all the wedding venues talked to each other and the prices were "fixed" through out the industry.

3. Count your money
Have a Turkish wedding lads. Parents pay for most of it and all the guests pin bank notes to your dress or suit after the wedding. Cousin came out on top about 8 grand.
