A better system would have been ensuring there's just one of each but Bungie just rolls out with stuff without going deeper tbh.
By DY_nasty Go To Postfaze, talk me into coming back
Well...this is the best Bungie's ever been at lore. The stuff going on there is legitimately really interesting and leading up to some really crazy shit. You can always just watch lore vids sure, but watching the Mara/Drifter/Nine/Dream City curse evolve in real time has been a really unique experience. And a lot of that stuff is available in solo content.
Gameplay wise the solo experience hasn't really changed much. One thing I can say though is that this is the first time I've felt like I'm more powerful than I've ever been in the series. For a while you could really feel that sense of power level rising with no real change. But the power fantasy has really reached a climax now between buffs, certain exotics, and pinnacle weapons. So there's a sense of "my loot matters and I really don't wanna miss out on gaining all I can."
The most encouraging thing about the future of destiny is:
1. Map design for 6 v 6 as the default in mind.
2. An emergence of more non-traditional PvE experiences i.e. Reckoning and Shattered throne dungeon.
3. Deep improvement of the lore.
4. No GaaS is doing loot better atm.
Problems still existing:
1. Bungie are low (high) key still assholes about certain things. I.E non 180 handcannons being stuck on trash mode for console.
2. Just too much busy work to achieve some of this loot. They need to do a better job of finding a way for the casual player to achieve desired end game items. Admittedly not too sure on how to balance this.
3. Grouping being a necessity for end game content without a decent in game LFG system.
TLDR: Destiny's in a good place, Destiny 3 is gonna be a hell of a lot better though, and if you're in need of a break now would probably be a nice time to refresh yourself for the grind D3 will bring.
The real question is if bungie really has the resources to release another big expansion in the fall + another annual pass for winter/spring/summer of 19-20.
It doesn't seem realistic that they'd be able to release say, the taken queen this fall, then the same level of annual pass content we got this year, followed by D3 in fall of 2020.

i want this new engine for d3 more than anything. you said it back at d2's release but they've done all they can with the enemies

Get yourself an AoS and Liar's Handshake Dy.
If they don't get their shit together with D3 in some respects when it comes to PVP I will rage though. Join me in progress to what should have been a game mercied only to just get spawn killed by supers and I don't even get one because late to the game. Fuck outta here with that.

One of the more lowkey things I really hope it has though is a way to make 3-5 sets you can just don with one click depending on what subclass or activity you're running. Even right now I change my pvp set up depending on the map but it's a real shit doing that right when it the game commences and getting a slow start, especially since heavy is just chilling right off the bat.
I would seriously temper expectations for a D3 or even a big fall expansion. They're building another game on the side for tencent or w/e that chinese company is now ontop of whatever they're doing with Destiny.
If any of you play hunter you gotta get these Liar's Handshakes and troll. Literally been punching people in their supers and killing them. Feels good man.
Sets will be a thing, it's been a highly requested feature, every other gaas does and its exactly what they are doing with gambit prime armour.
Bungie is 800 man strong even without VV and HM studios. My feeling is that we won't be seeing Destiny Infinity until 2021 but we will see something this autumn, won't be forsaken sized, think ROI with more annual trickle systems to keep us going.

By Bold 2 in One Go To Postits exactly what they are doing with gambit prime armour.Nah I'm not talking just that but like actually being able to just customize a set together and select a menu and boom. Instead of this switching out one at a time shit.
.
Yeah I think we'll start seeing loadout functionality. But not just weapons but armour too for every activity, but I am ready to be dissapointed
I'm ready to see a bunch of shit and be let down. Also I hit the point in the night where MM is really shittttttttt.
Bungo have conditioned us to never get ahead of ourselves, and manage our own expectations -which is often disappointment, Bungo have this habit doing a thing and never fully committing to it.
But I am genuinely hopeful, with them no longer beholden to Cuntivision's schedule, they can actually take their time to release quality content - every time they've taken their time we've gotten Taken King, Rise of Iron and Forsaken.

i think that's kinda bs.... again, borderlands was an educational experience - a lot of this shit ain't hard. anthem can fix more shit in a month than destiny can acknowledge in 6.
if i wanted to play titan right now, i'd be fucked :/ Okay, heavy RPG elements. We're gonna call it an MMObutnotreally and say that's the goal. I can't even get loadouts, proper matchmaking, any kind of sensible crafting, refusal to give up numbers (no one knows wtf range is to this day lol), etc
i think i'd be more comfortable if they'd pick something to focus on. the only thing i truly miss is the snap of handcannons and bows.

it takes time to create quality content with depth
Borderlands is a fantastic but not sure what they could learn from it apart from how to make wacky weapons.
The less destiny takes from Anthem the better tbh, that game is a mess.
I will concede that basic features are still missing, but I never defended that. I still lament the lack of matchmaking for nightfalls.

By Bold 2 in One Go To Postit takes time to create quality content with depthi never wanted matchmaking for nightfalls in the first place but acting like solo content is impossible to create while also gimping group stuff behind either dumb funneling like reckoning or plate-standing just isn't fun. a lot of the issues are just based on what they think players can actually do. there's a way to make difficult yet fun encounters other than just removing all cover and forcing players to get shot. stuff like that just drives me up a wall. the gunplay is too good to be stuck in bullet hell. and the rpg stuff is just.... what are they even drawing from? this stuff is nonsense lol

if you want to get down to it, borderlands map design, lore and writing (not even joking - jack> oryx, killing roland = killing cayde, and the "oh boy, any day now shit is gonna be crazy!!~~ story telling in D2 after they wasted everything), weapon diversity beyond purple = usable and a bunch of perks that are essentially wasting slots still, mods that significantly effect your build based around what's made your class special in the first place, numbers actually laying out exactly what those heavy rpg elements are, account wide perks, etc
anthem not shackling sandbox size updates to seasons, especially when some updates are simply common sense and should be executed as soon as identified. progressive gear introduction, a barebones crafting system that doesn't demand you suffer before anything else, consumables for pve that aren't tied to anything, map design, no grind/fun limits, not basically abandoning the other classes if you have a life, etc
i like destiny that's why i shit on it so much. this is isn't even quality content. i'll take another house of wolves before each of these season pass portions
edit: ffs i forgot destiny has more currencies than a cell phone game lol
I don't play enough raids to speak about encounter design, infact I really don't think encounter design matters a great deal when the community just Brute forces or games or exploits it's way to trivialising it.
As for Borderlands? That's personal preference, I never found its story engaging or memorable, I found the writing a bit trying especially with the humour tiny Tina etc.
It's fine to criticise a thing when it gets things wrong but refusing to give props whe it does get them right is bs to me, things have been crazy in Destiny for a while now, we killed a fucking wish granting dragon six months, guardians are divided along ideological lines in the allegiance quest - the vanguard is on the verge of collapse.
There are multiple story threads -
the city and its lack of leadership after the death of the speaker
The vanguard and in the brink of splintering with the hunters having no vanguard rep
Osiris still in the search for saint 14 (no he's not dead!)
Uldren's resurrection as a guardian
The dreaming city about to break the curse set by savathun
Savathuns and her daughters' arrival
Mara sic off to meet the Exo stranger
The drifter and the nine (we finally know what the nine actually are now and there are Factions amongst them)
Not even taking the pyramid ships into account, there's a lot happening, its not all always presented at surface level but it's very solid stuff.
Borderlands never really captured my imagination, preferred BL2, gunzerker for lyf! But I was really ever in it for the loot, with Destiny though, there is investment beyond that.

i give destiny props! its just that it seems like bungie itself doesn't like what Destiny is undisputed at (imo). again, you've got arguably the best gun feel for an FPS this gen and its more or less an afterthought in every single decision. As such, yeah encounter design is a big deal. Its more pronounced in PvP where players are forced to actively seek out advantages over a human opponent but the problems are just as real in PvE. I keep bringing it up because they keep diverting further and further away from all that. now its some weird pve rpg version of overwatch that no one asked for and the overworked community just kind of accepts.
you're kinda making my point about the story stuff though. the player isn't doing anything anymore but waiting for stuff to happen. it further reinforces all the "wait for D3" stuff, no real way to slice that up. the story feels over and this is the extended epilogue.
i'm not talking about immersion, because if you get into that then you're inherently subjective - everyone's gonna like resonate to certain things differently... people can rap about that one all day long and get nowhere really. i'm just saying that bungie can't make a villain, or a threat, as good as BL2. Oryx came, he sat in his ship. Indefinitely. Accomplished nothing. More than anything we're killing bad guys in their homes and fixing humanity's own fuck ups. Everything after Uldren may as well be the comic between Mass Effect 1 and 2.

PVP is in a weird place, honestly, I enjoy quickplay, but comp can fuck off, came close to unistalling last night after just one comp match, who ever designed and pitched Countdown as a mode should be sacked, I mean it, worst mode I ever played in any pvp shooter ever. while rift is left to rot in D1 why?!
anyway, I think you might be missing the forest for the trees as regards to story, plot, narrative and lore as all of those things are not the same thing, but they do form the threads of the on-going situation - I think its interesting you referenced Mass Effect, because I never liked the whole deal where your character is the be-all and end all saviour who everyone wants to bang. Thing with destiny is that you are variation of either, human, exo, or awoken, which can also be of three variants of classes and gender. on top of that, you have no name, so your actions on the world can't be clearly attributed because in MMO style you are one of millions running around, killing gods and planet eating machinery.
In Destiyn 1 you were a janitor cleaning messes up and being told about all the awesome stuff that happened a really long time ago, the battle of 6 fronts, the battle f twilight gap etc but now, things are unfolding in real time, yeah, we might not be the prime-movers all the time, but our actions have had consequences. In fact we've been at the centre of the main threads happening.
Killing Oryx - opened the door for Savathun, allowed the Queen to build her ascnedent realm
"Killing Uldren" allowed him to be revived as a Guardian,
Killing RIven meant the curse was unleashed in the DC
Killing Ghaul allowed him to be reborn in light- leading the traveller to announce its whereabouts - awakening the pyramid ships
Our beef with Oryx was actually quite simple, Oryx came for revenge for killing Crota, he took out the awoken fleet and its queen, tore the cabal apart, took majority of them.
We assault his dreadnaught, fight him and kill him in his ascendant realm in the raid Kings Fall.

Quickplay can be shit too. Just going off my own anecdotal evidence the game is really obsessed with matching my Ls streaks and Ws streaks. It's really obvious lately. I have some terrible Ls in a row, here's a team that can barely fend for itself to make up for that. Not to mention there's nothing "quick" about it.
Every time I try to get a new tier of Gambit gear I gotta get like 3 of the same gear piece before I get a new one.
By Bold 2 in One Go To PostDont solo that shitI beat it twice free I just hate jumping puzzles
Third time I was looking for toland and pisses myself off ughhhhhhh
Destiny matchmaking stays the worst I think I've ever seen. I could forgive it being lopsided if it didn't take 5-10 min just to get into one.
i knew i'd hate pvp now but getting stuck against the same full set on a friday night while getting izanagi'd over and over was a hell of a welcome back
By Bold 2 in One Go To PostSix months later..
will never forget datto's team choking and costing themselves a 4 + hour head start on queens walk
I am really surprised at the quality, in the tweet all those months ago it looked a fisher pirce replica, but the vid shows its heavy duty and legit
I got a master worked crimson or whatever. It feels godlike. But it feels like three taps are trades.
I may just be forgetting how bad lag is too. I could adjust way better on PC. I'm certainly rusty. I can't identify certain nuance like I used to. Just impossible for me to play aggressive anymore. Hard to find a sweet spot for my aim now. Jumping between setups isn't helping either.
Also, the shotgun nerf is depressing. Am I right to assume there's only a handful left worth using? It used to be that within a certain range, you could guarantee death with anything. Now? Death is merely encouraged. And firing from the air is a trap.
The two weapons I've *built* are stability focused. Got a Trust and Right Side of Wrong that would by all definition be OP last time I played. From what I can see now, they're too honest and remarkably average.
People are sleeping HARD on NuPoledancer. Like wtf. If Arc grenades had any sort of vertical threat this shit would be hands down my favorite class in the game.

if you want a hand cannon that can compete with anything, get the vender rolled trust on sale from drifter
Range masterwork, light mag, genesis, explosive rounds
Obviously you can do better on a random roll to add a little more range, and that genesis perk is useless in pvp, but the key thing there is:
180 rpm hand cannon + good range + explosive rounds.
I got to fabled using this thing this season without really touching my lunas howl. The main thing is the flinch the explosive rounds cause. If you can cause flinch to a not forgotten/lunas user, then they are going to struggle to land that howl perk, which basically makes things all even.

I thought explosive rounds got nerfed explicitly because of that, thanks. Ive got hip fire and snapshot w/ counter balance and stability - it's a damn laser but that's not good enough. I'm way too honest smh
Im gonna try and bang out either Last Word or Thorn tonight. Maybe grind a Dustrock. Is it some timed mission bullshit for those? If it's nightfall or ascendant challenge level I can tackle it.
Think I might grind this Darci masterwork for a DPS option too. Sleeper got shit on I see.
