I guess they've managed to revive themselves lol
NGL this looks good
They've made it really easy to jump in. They give max light items for every slot as of Tuesday and the horde mode is super easy to get into and fairly low stress. Great way to ease back into the game.

Bungie's "studio about to close if we don't deliver" energy is wild ngl
Is this expansion going to be as big as Forsaken? Because the amount of info they are dropping is kind of wild.

into the Light alone has been really huge for the game - this is how you rime for a significant drop.
gonna have to grind this story out fast, i know social media going to have thumbnails of a mfer getting shot or somethin
campaign is waaay easier than lightfall and witch queen. not in a bad way, but a lot of the solo encounters just involve a puzzle process that's not too bad. the strike is crazy though.
and man i forgot bungie could even do a good story
prismatic is fukkery like you wouldn't believe

I'm enjoying the story, gameplay has been kind of eh. I think Lightfall and Witch Queen had better encounter design. There's a lot of just throwing a ton of shit at you in Final Shape where you're just kind of running in circles in between meters filling, waiting to blow your prismatic load on everything.
I'm not disappointed or anything, and the second half of the campaign might ramp things up significantly. I only just got the new light super.
I definitely agree there. Witch Queen in particular had way more deliberate encounter designs at times. The ahamkara fight had everything for example.
Encounter is better than Lightfall. The new enemies alone make it levels above. I am playing on normal not legend, so I imagine when I switch to legend it will be so much more intense.
Campaign is Bungies best character work ever. Not even finished yet.

Wish I could do some stuff but I got an insane bug where if I switch out weapons they turn invisible with light effects and aren't even the right one anymore. Game breaking stuff tbh. My Graviton turned into Last Perdition and my Thorn turned into Last Word.
Second half was definitely a lot better encounter wise. Final boss was oof. Had me going through my vault searching for answers lol.
No energy for this raid shit

So much what could have been with how good the game is atm.
To be honest i don’t really know whether or not I should stick around at this point. The story ends strongly enough that I kind of want to delete this. But at the same time plenty of end game stuff still waiting.
They are announcing details on the future tomorrow so that might help make up my mind.
Future episode preview slate got revealed. Pretty much felt like your standard season pass shit kind of content, just with lessons learned from old models so looking to spice things up a bit.
I can't say I felt too energized about any of the hinted story lines. I'll probably grind out the Final Shape content to its full extent and then take a long break until whatever is next. They hinted at Year 11 being codenamed "Frontiers". But specifically the D2 symbol was used and is to be revealed in 2025.

Bungie rekt
It's probable that no number that Final Shape got to was gonna prevent the layoffs. That's a shame.
I think the real question for them at this point is whether or not improving visual fidelity and scope is worth the increased production cost to create Destiny 3 or if it's better off to just keep dropping expansions and stuff on top of the D2 engine. Because if they are not creating much of a nest egg with D2 profits as is, it's hard to imagine a sequel changing their overall outlook in the long term.

Fat was getting trimmed regardless. Stories of Bungie bloat goes back a long ass ways
Sony was gonna demand a restructuring too
Sony was gonna demand a restructuring too
Destiny makes bank, but its been badly spent - 4 incubation projects that never materialised outside of Marathon.
Restructure has been long coming, TFS was a success by revenue - but 1300 people and an overpaid ELT is eating into all the profits.
That many people relying on a single IP is madness and shitty management.

I think writing is on the wall that Destiny is going to die because it costs too much to produce enough content at a decent enough cadence to keep engagement high.
People blame management, but they have tried:
1. Lower cadence and output (Curse of Osiris era) : Result is probably decreased production cost, but player base flees in droves.
2. Insane content output via stuff like Forsaken: Fanbase is in love, engagement high, production costs were insane and so no money really got made.
So that happens and they are like welp, time to go insane with Eververse. Offer some content stuff that is maybe in the Goldilocks in terms of production costs/quality (i.e. Shadowkeep), start charging for dungeons, charge for everything. Result: Mid engagement, still not profitable enough.
IT's joever, math aint mathin

Management is definitely at fault.
This is not a Destiny problem. It makes enough money. Actually, it's quite lucrative. The problem is that it's being used to prop up a studio ballooning out of control whilst operating from one of the most expensive parts of the country.
1300 people. Yeah, no shit the math ain't mathing..
Destiny's cadence will need to change and it's retention approach too.

And also Osiris era was simply *bad*. Forsaken worked great if you apply the context that the game would've died altogether if it flipped.
Bungie continuing to bloat despite the ups and downs and indie status in between was always going to come back around in some form. Hell, the fact they couldn't figure out how to stabilize PvP and introduce monetization in that lane is proof they were never serious lol
I think their biggest problem with Destiny 2 is that they could never figure out what their base gameplay was. Unlike other MMORPGs that would do content releases and layer on, they kept trying to "fix" shit.
There's no doubt Destiny 2 makes a lot of money, but that's irrelevant if the net profit isn't there. Remember that Activision was thrilled to be rid of Bungie years back. This was before the massive hiring expansion and when Marathon might have been in preproduction at best. They were a single game studio and still needed assistance from Activisions dev teams.
Microsoft looked their way and said naw. Sony is regretting the purchase already.
If Destiny 2 could be comfortably profitable on its own, there wouldn't be this level of hail mary's going on.

The net profit is affected if your overhead is wild. And Bungies overhead is wild. Pete said so in the announcement, they became too ambitious with their reach, overhired during covid and were incubating like 4 projects none of which have seen the light of day.
They've got a building site in the Netherlands doing...something.
They broke new ground in a site in Washington I think?
Microsoft wouldn't pay the money because they only have one one IP generating any ROI.
Sony didn't buy for Destiny. They bought them for their live service expertise. We'll see how Marathon does, but so far it's working. Doubly so now that SIE has eaten up 200 employees from Bungie.
The acquisition was always going to go two ways.
1. Bungie figured it out and sustained itself and became a proto publisher with multiple ips under Sony but retaining independence.
2. Things dont work out, Sony takes control and we get a new killzone.
All in all. You only have to look at their past to realise how poor their management and risk mitigation is. How many times has the game been on the brink only for the top dev talents to pull one out of the bag?
Back in 1998 they nearly went bankrupt because myth 2 launched with a bug that would wipe your c drive. Then they go make halo for apple and MS swoops in.
Did Sony overpay? Absolutely.
Then again they got insomniac for 200 bucks and a packet of cheetos. It's the universe balancing itself out.

Look how awfully mismanaged Halo has been since, too
This week, to learn more about what happened and what comes next, I spoke to ten current and former Bungie employees, who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak to the press. They described a company that grew too fast and tried to develop too many projects at once, spreading resources too thin rather than prioritizing its chief moneymaker, Destiny 2.
Most of the people were critical of Chief Executive Officer Pete Parsons, saying he had failed to take accountability for his own bad bets and that he’d been overly optimistic in his communication with the staff. Some said Parsons and other company leaders spoke of “Bungie magic” — a confident mantra, similar to ones preached by other elite video-game studios, that they can make anything work out. (See: BioWare magic, Arkane magic, etc.)
Bungie first released Destiny in 2014 in partnership with Activision Blizzard Inc. under a contract that called for the developer to release a new product every year — full games alternating with expansions. But the schedule proved untenable for Bungie, which cut ties with Activision in 2019 largely so it could continue updating Destiny 2 rather than start from scratch with another sequel. Since then, Bungie has transformed Destiny 2 into a “live service” game, updating it with new content and regular expansions.
During one grim meeting in late 2023, according to the people familiar, Parsons told staff that the company had missed its revenue targets by 45% and was losing money. Bungie delayed The Final Shape and Marathon and subsequently laid off around 100 employees.
Earlier this year, Sony Interactive Entertainment Chairman Hiroki Totoki publicly criticized Bungie, saying he wanted to see more “accountability.”
Fans have wondered if Bungie might one day start anew with a Destiny 3, but such a project has not been in development, according to the people familiar. Bungie is instead looking to create a smoother onboarding process for Destiny 2, such as a rebranding, to attract new players who might be turned off by a game that can now feel impenetrable to those unfamiliar with its ample proper nouns.https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-08-02/sony-s-bungie-maker-of-halo-and-destiny-faces-reckoning-after-mass-layoff
Again, saying Activision and Microsoft didn't want Bungie is wild revisionist stuff.

From 123k total players avg in June to 46k avg in the last 30 days according to steam charts.
I kind of think they are reaching a "we need destiny 3" point. People are fleeing immediately once they've engaged with most of the expansion and seem less willing to engage with end game content. I haven't done a raid since Beyond Light lol, but that's just anecdotal. Haven't done a GM in a similar period of time. I'm not necessarily sure why...I think it's that I'll engage with just about anything I can jump into solo without a mic but nothing beyond that.
