The skill for MOBA's is varied.
Reaction time.
Mechanics:- For Dota2 that includes;
|knowing how to alter creep agro so that they attack the creep you want
|knowing how to time several creeps getting low at the right time to clear a wave with a spell
|knowing your opponents damage
|knowing your opponents positioning at all times
|timing things like runes
|...
Positioning: Many MANY fights are lost because people don't think about how engagements play out, they just "enter" fights. But the higher skilled players think about how a fight will play out based on your positioning and adjust based on that.
Communication: Pretty huge part of it. Know what to call, when to call, and being aware enough to make the call. Being aware enough to react correctly to communication.
Skill/Item builds: Knowing what to get for your hero, not just in general, but against other heroes. Adjusting those builds.
Game Knowledge: Knowing how heroes spells work and how they work with other heroes. And items with them.
There's more, i'm just throwing this together quickly.
The mechanics of MOBA's (particularly LOL and Dota2) are hard to fully get your head around and execute. But most players can get that to a relatively high level. Positioning and execution are incredibly difficult. Require years of practice. There's more, but i'm just doing this quickly.
I mean, knowing the terrain is important too, it's easy to get out of position in Dota2 with the map being 3D, not just flat.
And that's before you get into the execution of "skill shots". Being isotopic (top down from an angle) really doesn't limit any games skill ceiling. And a lot of skills (such as item respawn timing in an FPS) transfer to MOBA's.
I watch more dota than i probably should. Do i think there's as much skill in it as an RTS like Sc2? hmmmm possibly.

I keep forgetting that MGSV is out this year, even though it looks amazing and could well be my GotY

Coming to grips that I'm on a different train right now.
i'm gonna power through my fucked up sleep cycle and try to either return to tales of xillia 2 (this game is shit without milla) or start south park stick of truth since i've been puttng it off for forever
or i'll be an ass and buy me3 trilogy for ps3 unless someone can convince me a remaster is coming to ps4 within the year

if you're gone for good i'll take a titan x pls, sell it at the slaent discount?
and honestly, i've been "retired" from gaming since a few months after Gears 3 dropped...so...2011? and that basically just means i haven't been a day and date guy for many games lately and haven't been focused on the MP scene for anything since then, but I still enjoy the occasional marathon, maybe 30-45 minutes a few times a week on PC, etc.
so you going full emo and selling all the bullshit or what cuz that would be sad

you've definitely beaten all these games before right? jesus
Gaming is too time consuming.
And surprisingly requires more energy than listening to music/watching TV. My backlog is a real thing for the first time in my life.

It's mostly things like...the time I'm gaming could be used teaching myself a different programming language or some other skill that I could potentially get rich af off of or something. I'm on that train right now.
Plus the industry sucks shit right now.
I haven't tried GTAV since the patch. Little scared to see what's up.
I also gave back the 360 controller I was borrowing and driving with KB/M suuuuucks.

Bloodborne was the first time in a long time since I really got lost in a game.
Bruhs pls get on that Rocket League and understand that gaming can be fun again.

Ammo and weapon situation looking better now in Wasteland 2. I'm one hard encounter away from being completely fucked in terms of HP though, healing items are ridiculously expensive.

I see a lot of people think about gaming this way. "I could be doing something more productive with my time". I mean yeah you could, but you'd probably be a really miserable person if you're only doing things that are productive for the sake of being productive. That's why you don't.
That's why I still value my gaming time. I think of it as a break from the soul crushing compulsion to be productive.
Plus the industry sucks shit right now.
Yeah it does. That's why I just play old shit. Been playing some PC RPGs and finding them to be way more engaging than almost everything that's come out of the past decade.
and there's enough good games already out there to keep you playing for a life time. So I just go backwards instead of waiting for new bullshit to come out.
Smokey do you play games that arent big budget AAA titles?
Because I'd get burned out really fast if I did.

Not really. That's probably the problem. I know the solution is Nintendo but it's fuk Nintendo. We've already covered that before.

Just give the AAA stuff a break. A lot of it is the same because its intentional. I can't even start up a game of CoD without throwing my controller in advance anymore. Barely made it through the intro of AW and I'll probably never buy another Ubisoft game again. Hell, because 2k turned fuckboy I cant even play MyPlayer for more than a few hours total before wiping the entire game off my harddrive. Bigger devs keep kicking out what sells and it just happens to be a lot of the same shit. I'm not saying go indie or anything tho just look for other shit that's outside of your typical lane.

Gaming is a hobby and a break from "work", and something that should be fun and enjoyable. Self improvement is always good. But you could also train your self to live on 4 hours sleep a day. Run 8 miles a day. Eat vegan. Grow your own vegetables....
Gaming isn't a chore. I don't play "hard core" any more. I play maybe 5 hours a week (Thanks to study). But I do enjoy it. Adjust your gaming to make you happy. For most of us, it's about finding the sweet spot.
By Hitch Go To PostNot liking the new Dota 2 compendiumIt could have been done better, and some of the stretch goals are ... half assed. A hud? please, thats something I expected as part of the purchase.

As it is, I consider the compendium to be a kind of goodwill payment for the amount of time I spend playing it for free.
Gonna grab it anyways at the end of the week.

The barest of the basics. As in I play league and I'm aware of the major differences between the games.
I have alot of freetime at work so I'll be doing a bit of reading this week
Can you level up your compendium reasonably without spending money on points?
Seems like you just buy your way up the rewards

By Vlatko Go To PostCan you level up your compendium reasonably without spending money on points? As far as I can tell, its 25 points per win, 100 points per level. So you're looking at playing for possibly 6-8 hours just to gain 1 level.
Seems like you just buy your way up the rewards
There's also a coin system where you choose a per-match challenge of various difficulty, to receive coins relative to said difficulty. 100 coins can be swapped for an item, 300 for a set. Multiplier bonuses for other people in the match owning compendiums

I think it was designed around Doll travel being faster, but not sure as I haven't gotten that far yet. I do like the combat though, and the interaction between party members. I'll give it more attention soon-at least until the FFXIV expansion drops...
I have to revise my stance on AC:IV. Shooting down and boarding random ships is cool, but the ship-based story missions are complete ass. Escorting another boat? Sneaking through a swamp? Avoiding sharks while diving? Suck my diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick.

Knowing your opponent's positioning is called map awareness, and it is by far the hardest skill to learn because it encompasses the sum total of all knowledge there is in DotA. It's a skill that can't be taught. It's practically developing a 6th sense.
Are you mid? How are you controlling your lane by denying your enemy gold while also keeping track of the enemy supports so you don't end up getting ganked and dying because you went for the same rune 3 enemy heroes went for since your supports warded the OTHER rune, which your jungler was already standing on at 1:55?
Or you just saw Slark mid at the T1. you're Drow bottom between your T2 and T1. How long will it take a Slark with a lothar to come down and kill you? or better yet, how many creeps can you kill in jungle and lane before you have to TP away Slark?
Positioning (in fights) is important, but I think discerning when to take a fight is just as important. I've lost about 25 games worth of MMR in the last patch, so now I'm in a tier where my teammates would rather fight in the enemy jungle not knowing where anyone is rather than fighting at our tower and forcing them to dive us. Buncha derps.
Likewise, sometimes taking kills takes guts. Diving on someone and barely surviving with 5HP...that's high skill too, and beyond my scope. There are pros who have calculated damage after armor and magic resistance and damage types before they engage. I'm not that serious, but I don't get paid to play either.
Right now, IceFrog added so many items that the meta has yet to reestablish itself. So far, everyone likes glimmer cape. That Orb that reduces c/d for spells is magnificent, but for 5900, why not buy hex? It's basically the INT hero's equivalent of the Divine Rapier.
By DY_nasty Go To Postsmokey, can you hoop yet? i know you were dealing with that mean ankle injury
I've tried one time since the injury. Wasn't able to run full speed. Still hit da game winner tho. Was afraid to make any sudden movements. I tried one time and felt my foot roll and I was spooked the rest of the game. Pretty much became a spot up shooter.
Really think I needed surgery, but I feel like the guy I went to didn't know what he was talking about. Fear my foot may forever be fucked now.
