whats the benefit of that bridge, smokey?
You have a vertical pci-e case design?yeah i think he does, he posted pics a few pages back.
you don't have the Silverstone FT-02 do you?
hah he does. same case i have..die, hopefully you can answer this, but do you know of any lcd monitor that can custom scale vertically and horizontally via hdmi signal?
i know you can with vga signal on most monitors, but im going through my many monitors, and it seems like you can only do custom scaling on vga/analog signal.
thanks
are you talking about scaling as in HDMI overscan or as in you want a custom resolution?i want to be able to squeeze the incoming signal vertically so that i'll have black bars on the top and bottom, making it look like a movie aspect ratio so to speak.
i remember being able to accomplish that on old CRT monitors, but i haven't seen an LCD that can do that with HDMI signal.
here's an example of what im talking about.
I guess i might be misunderstanding but you basically want a wider aspect ratio on an lcd, right?
You could use an LCD with no scaler (or one that will go to 1:1 mode), disable GPU scaling and use a vertical resolution smaller than that of the monitor.
Ala buy a 2560x1440 monitor and run it at 2560x1080.
If that isnt what you wanted then you actually want to squeeze the aspect so its messed up and everything is squashed? that would be.. weird.

Yep, FT02 it is. Thing is a boss, even though it's a bit outdated in some of it's design. Wish Silverstone would come out with a update. Looking into getting a new case soon. Most likely a Corsair 900D or a Lian-Li that giri pointed me to a few pages back. Sort of outgrowing it with what I want to do (limited to 2 GPUs on air for ex), and I don't like how I am pretty much stuck with reference coolers on GPU due to the orientation.
I'll probably do an overhaul when the X99 platform with 8 cores/DDR4 launches. Need to update my 2600k and move to PCIE 3.0.
whats the benefit of that bridge, smokey?
No performance benefits. Just looks. I had an ASUS bridge on there before which was fine...but I have EVGA cards and it was bugging me.
vs
That 900D is just so huge .. the other day i was putting ram in some ESXi servers and was thinking how strange it was that they have nearly 1TB of RAM with 4x decacore procs and 4x PSU's and its smaller than a 900D lol
If that isnt what you wanted then you actually want to squeeze the aspect so its messed up and everything is squashed? that would be.. weird.yes, this is exactly what i need.
sorry, i should've mentioned this in the beginning.
im doing several short films this next few months, and we're shooting with anamorphic lenses.
the anamorphic lens i have will yield 50% more field of view horizontally, but retain the same vertical field of view.
what an anamorphic footage looks like uncorrected:
same anamorphic footage correct/squeezed:
another example of anamorphic uncorrect/corrected
i already have a field monitor and electronic view finder on my camera rig that can properly squeeze the footage real-time,
but im looking for cheap solution for a director monitor that can also squeeze the footage in real-time.
i can easily rent/buy proper production monitors that squeeze the footage in real time but they go for around $3000.
but i'd like to rent as little as possible. so im just looking around for a cheap viable alternative.
thanks

It really is. Kind of why I'm pausing on it. I saw one at Microcenter and it was no joke.
At the same time though it lets you do whatever kind of build you want. I plan to go water cooling later this year and a 900D would let me do whatever. I've got some parts now and could at least do the CPU in the FT02...but it would be tight.
im planning to get the 900d as well, that monster dwarfs any other corsair mid/full tower out there.

What setup are you trying to build?
I've got the X99 (Intel 8 core CPUs), 900D/Lian-Li, planned. Maybe a 4K monitor if I can flip my current Dell U3011. I've come to the conclusion that I don't want to go lower than a 27/28'' for a monitor. 30'' seems to be perfect for me. Had a bunch of work stuff going on and was able to multi-task easily with multiple windows. In gaming the IQ is ridiculous with the screen size and resolution. If I could sell my Dell + 3x Asus 120hz monitors the difference might not be too bad for a nice 4k monitor.
ok that makes more sense, i was thinking that you were just talking about games or something..
So just to be sure, you want to take a 4:3 (or 16:9) and squeeze it into anamorphic in real time? Can't the cameras capture in an anamorphic resolution also?
That is a pretty niche thing you want.. got a link to the $3000 thing that will do it?

Corsair 900D
Asus Z9PE-D8 WS
Dual Xeon E5-2687v2 (16physical cores, 32threaded)
64gb ram @ 2100mhz
i haven't decided on the rest. how much are you spending on that thing?
So just to be sure, you want to take a 4:3 (or 16:9) and squeeze it into anamorphic in real time?yes. the footage from the camera is 16:9
Can't the cameras capture in an anamorphic resolution also?no, the camera doesn't have that option to squeeze the footage internally.

im going to send the anamorphic signal from my camera to the director monitor via hdmi wireless transmitter.
like this
http://www.amazon.com/Nyrius-Transmitter-Streaming-Satellite-NPCS550/dp/B0092T3E3A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395092083&sr=8-1&keywords=nyrius+aries+pro
i was thinking maybe with the hdmi reciever, i can buy some kind of hdmi to vga adapter that will connect to the vga female input on the monitor.
so that the incoming footage going to the monitor will have an analog signal and therefore adjust vertical scaling.
Im no video pro but wouldnt anamorphic footage captured at an interal 16:9 res look pretty bad?
There are some wireless VGA transmitters if that would help..
Also id go with a supermicro motherboard if you are going dual socket.

Don't do something silly like try to buy unregistered ram for it :0

i've heard of supermicro but i've never read proper feedback from users.
its good to know there's a cheaper alternative Asus.
UDIMM's are unregistered, RDIMM's are registered , and basically all registered RAM will also have ECC. You can technically put 64GB of UDIMM's in each 2011 socket.. but if you are looking to spend that kind of money, get registered. Don't worry about LRDIMM's though unless you want over 512GB.
Workstation and server boards are kinda their forte, they have probably 25 different dual socket 2011 boards while Asus has 1.

Probably like $1,500
5930k - $600
Motherboard - $300-350ish
DDR4 - Guessing $250
Corsair 900D - $300
This wasn't supposed to happen until Q4 when X99 launches, but they just moved the launch to Q2...
I've been out of gaming for a couple of months, but I got Ground Zeroes. People can bitch about it only being 2 hours all they want, as far as I'm concerned that's a selling point. I feel like 3-5 hours would be a sweet spot for me for a lot of games. I would pay $35 for that.

If you're a MGS fan, it's worth it. I already put 5 hours into it through 2 main mission playthroughs. Side ops are next.
Also, Infamous is very nice looking, decently fun to play, but nothing groundbreaking gameplay wise. Deserves it's review scores around 8/10.
So Luftrausers is fun as hell. Having a blast with it. Witch and the Hundred Knight is a cool ARPG. Deception 4 is like putting on an old pair of clean pants. Relaxing yet not expecting anything out of the ordinary. But still good. And FFXHD is FF. That's still good.
Well it appears that Naval Strike is out on PC now

It seems like my pc is on its deathbed so I started looking into building one cheap so that it can upgraded but I've found out that I know nothing about PC parts. I came up with this just by going through the GAF thread but I have no idea if its any good or if I can do better for the price.
I'd appreciate it if someone can look over it and let me know if I fucked something up that might cause issues when trying to upgrade in the future or if it just sucks.

I assume you wont overclock?
For sure get at least two stick of ram for dual channel. Maybe go with something like a Samsung 840 EVO on the SSD , the smaller capacity M500's are a bit slow (this is being nit-picky though).
Also maybe get a regular ATX motherboard if you are getting a mid-tower.. the two extra 1x PCI-E on a cheap motherboard couldn't hurt.. right?
Maybe take a look at your HD selection.. for literally $5 more (newegg) you can get a 1TB version of the same drive.
Oh yeah you could go with the i5-4470 for $5 bucks more and get a 300mhz gain on the max Turbo... worth skipping a hamburger for :0

can you even overclock that i5-4430?
if its not, spend a little more an overclockable cpu (intel k-models)

I only chose that motherboard because it was recommended, don't really mind micro vs normal. Do you have another one in particular in mind?
Actually had the right ram and 1TB HD selected, don't know why I added those models on amazon when totaling the costs.
I assume you mean the i5-4570?
Thanks guys.
whoops meant the i5-4440

NSMBU
Mario 3D World
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Rayman: Legends
Wind Waker HD
and we're still gonna get:
Zelda Wii U
Mario Kart 8
Smash Bros U
then I'm not so mad anymore. Worth it for those games alone.

if this Smash Direct is any indication, might be doing this to make way for new games to appear at E3.

I find NSMBU mind numbingly boring compared to Mario 3D world
Tropical Freeze is a great game but I have not gotten very far...because I royally suck at the game and I have a hard time moving on levels until I've completed it 100%
Whatever new Zelda, Smash and Mario Kart will have made it worth it for me too. But I'm afraid the online is going to be turrible...
Thankfully I care almost nothing about online. Gimme epic single player experiences.I find NSMBU mind numbingly boring compared to Mario 3D worldSure, but it's still good.Tropical Freeze is a great game but I have not gotten very far…because I royally suck at the game and I have a hard time moving on levels until I've completed it 100%I hear ya. But it's worth just powering through and completing it without worrying about getting all the KONG letters and puzzle pieces. I'm so hyped for Mario kart 8. Seriously looks amazing. Though I'm not a fighting genre kinda guy, I'll be jumping on Smash and am just hyped as all hell for Zelda. At the end of the day the Wii U is a total failure of a system but it will have amazing Nintendo 1st party games that I will be playing for some time.

No comp because, as been the case the past number of years, I run 2k son. On Xbox or PS it doesn't matter
But you already know this ;)
Picked up Yakuza 3, I remember enjoying the demo a while back.
Any fans? How important is knowing previous events in the story?
Really want to play the first two but there's no chance Sega brings over the HD collection and my PS2 is broken :(

Love the series. But they give you a chance for an overview of the events at the beginning(if memory serves correctly). And Yakuza 4 is a beast of a game. So play through 3, grin and deal with the orphanage parts and you should be okay. You are in for a treat.
So I tried starting TLOU...
I'm finding it hard to continue it in what little free time I have... does it get better past the first 30 minutes?
Also, grafx... orz... not so bueno.

Anybody here play CS:GO on Steam? Because I started getting back into it. I wanted a shooter...but BF4 is trash, and so is COD.
I hadn't really played much CS since like....the mid 2000s? I had Source and 1.6 but when I got to college I kinda stopped playing. But damn, this shit is so good and I missed it. The competitive matchmaking can be hit or miss but when you're paired with 4 who actually communicate and give a damn, it's a pleasure. And there isn't bullshit respawning, getting kills too easily, and perks. You also aren't going to die because somebody else is in an OP vehicle and you aren't.
I been playing with some folks in the Madden-GAF league, but right now we have like 6 guys who play.
