By vire Go To PostAnybody download the Street Fighter V beta? This is gonna be my first attempt at getting gud at a fighting game.
Preordered on Amazon and then canceled it after I got my beta code. /scumbag
I did the same. I usually buy fighting games digitally so I don't have to change disks on something I play on and off.
Not about to pay 60 up front a year in advance for the beta though.
Hope it goes live before I head into work tomorrow night
By DY_nasty Go To PostI hope it's better than 4. I really fucking do.
Honestly, it doesn't have to try THAT hard to be better.
While we are on the topic of SF.
Fuck Alpha 3 Final Boss Bison.
By psychintellect Go To PostDidn't SFIV sort of single handedly rejuvenate the FGC?
I think netplay and streaming becoming so widespread played a bigger role.
SF4 definitely played a part, but mostly by just coming out at the right time lol.
By vire Go To PostAs someone who is not really in the loop for Street Fighter, why do ya'll hate it so much?
There are alot of design decisions that bug me about the game.
I never liked the Focus Attack/FADC system. I think how strict combo timings are even for basic damage are counter intuitive. I think Plinking is stupid and so is an input system that requires/rewards stick modification to increase your odds of hitting a combo. I don't like the large proximity guard boxes. I think Revenge/Ultra is a boring/bad system. I don't like how you can buffer/mash reversals while in block or hit stun and have the move come still come out on the first available frame. I don't like the skewed risk/reward that has shifted the entire meta towards jab confirms for the game's entire lifespan. I don't like 2-button throws. I don't like throw teching. I don't like crouch teching lol
Basically SF4 is just the opposite of my idea of a fun fighting game. I'm interested in SFV because the designers for the most part seem to agree so far.
SF4 'saving' the fighting community was more good timing than anything else. Name recognition + accessibility for casuals x streaming blowing up
I want to say if MK had its shit together, it could've been them but meh. Street Fighter is just that much bigger of a name. All SF4 had to do was be mediocre and it was. meh
edit: dead on man. that 1-frame shit was just irritating. hate crouch teching and reversals with a passion. its just too advantageous to play defensively and it always feels like they never gave two shits about verticality as well.

Damn, Retro said it better than I could've.
Question: Why did Fighting Games had a crash on the first place? Over Saturation of the market or because the games were getting more complex......or death of arcades?

Even before streaming, SFIV was in heavy rotation in the arcades, during the locations tests and whatnot. People were hungry for a new fighter. I guess being in the right place at the right time helped, but eh. Streaming didn't really factor until after Super.
I wish KoF13 had better netcode, so people could have seen the light. :(

They stopped being cutting edge. At the height of their popularity, arcade boards and the fighting games made on them were capable of producing visuals that just blew away anything possible on home consoles.
As consoles caught up in power, and surpassed the visuals in fighting games, the genre kind of fell to the back burner in the eyes of mainstream consumers.
I think that kind of happens to every genre as the industry and tech evolves. Traditional JRPGs went through a similar crash. FF7 was once the cutting edge must have home console game, but now similar experiences are what we would expect on handhelds today.
Edit: ^Thanks for the response Retro_, you da real M.V.P
Perhaps dead is the wrong word then. Fighting games were still getting released and were hot in the streets (everyone and their grandma played tekken 3 at some point).
But why was SF in a rut from post 3 til 4 tho? Never understood that.
But yea space sim games are deader than disco.
KOF 13 is grrrrrreat. Love SNK games/AST's
Man if I had the money to spend, I'll buy Last Blade 1 and 2 of the Wii VC right now.

Yes, but so were alot of other games even before SF4's announcement/release.
People only paid attention to SF4's arcade release stateside in anticipation of the game's console release. but what's important here is the fact that they COULD pay attention to the arcade release. Leading up to the game dropping in consoles we could watch video footage on youtube of high level players in another country. Vs in SF3's era where niggas were passing around VHS recordings of EVO matches to learn how to play.
When I say streaming I mean that we have access to see good players play fighting games right at our finger tips on demand. Nothing sells these games better.
By DY_nasty Go To PostHow many years was it between SF3A and 4 though?
Almost 10 years
3rd strike was 99 and SF4 was 08

And Freespace 2 is the GOAT space sim.
Alpha 3: 1998
3rd Strike: 1999
IV: 2008
...............
..........wow just remembered that I bought IV day one.
Eh, streaming being any huge reasons for it's crazy start is overselling it, imo. E-sports wasn't as big of a thing back then and definitely didn't reach as many mainstream people as it does now. Ultimately it's why it's successful, but in the beginning? People were happy to see Chun-Li, Ryu, and Ken again. Nostalgia is crazy.
Outside of it not looking like the first 3D entry, it got popular for the same reasons COD did, when it hit live for the first time.
"we made shit easier so everyone can be awesome. if you get hit you get an ultra. look at these shortcuts" (lies at the first part)
"you can play your friends online" (Ish was revolutionary to people)
Outside of Smash running the mainstream streets, I can't even remember what fighter was doing any numbers, aside from MK and Tekken. I played GG and hella shit on GGPO, but most people didn't know what that shit was or couldn't get it to run.
There are only like... 4 fighting series in the US/EU worth checking for though. MK, Tekken, SC, and SF - SF having a 10 year reunion was dope but a lot of that was based on the fact that they could generate huge marketing for themselves in ways that they couldn't before. Streaming was a really, really big part of that because it was basically like giving out demo discs like the old days. Even though you couldn't play, you could talk about it. And word of mouth has always been big for fighting games.

ton of space sims out there now... normal flight sims naw but space sims are out there
Online had a huge factor in fighting games getting big. Unless I'm mistaken I don't remember stuff like Tekken/MK having online during the PS2 era. Back then you either had to play your friends locally or play the cpu since arcades were dead.
Fighting games will probably get even bigger once they figure out how to make online more playable. Most of the KI community loves KI online and says it doesn't feel much different than playing offline, so if SF/Tekken can get to that level the genre will grow even more.

Picked up a Logitech G502 Mouse.
I now have the Corsair M65, G502, and Sensei Raw. I definitely like the feel of this G502. It "fits" better than those others and the Logitech software seems pretty good. Your thumb naturally rests in that area with the blue that you see the screen shot. Got a new mouse mat too. Much better material then the one I was using before and together this combo is really smooth.
Omega I am now ready to return to CS GO.

2k Pro Am in a venue that supports 40 players at the same time? What an accomplishment!
-Fuck that, I'm out. Not spending half an hour to an hour to wait to get a game going anymore.
"Following a highly successful debut in NBA 2k15, MyLeague..."
I laughed. Stopped reading.
NHL going to get most of my play time this fall.

You will be playing Park and you will play Pro Am
"we completely fucked with controls again without adding a single new feature" is something I expect to happen
By Smokey Go To PostYou will be playing Park and you will play Pro Am
Nah, I've learned my lesson.
I know exactly where my sports gaming hours will be spent. And it won't be spent waiting for a game to start which often doesn't start because others back out.
Also, wasting up to 40 minutes of my life because people don't understand how the fuck team ball works.
If I were to have a squad consistently to play with, that'd be different. I really enjoyed doing that stuff. However, that squad last year often included Drizzler (Who drove me insane at least 10 times a night) and some other people who didn't know anything but stepback corner 3s, and a variety of swiss cheese.
I might start getting into MyTeam, but I recently blew all my stubs on packs recently, and damn, I just don't feel like doing the grind again. The best card I got out of 15 packs I got was a Russell Westbrook.
I've never understood WHY you had to wait for a myparj game? Its 2015 ffs
Its like we're playing a 2005 online flash game or something.
My career and park are for suckers tho.

It wasn't so bad because I would usually find something else to do while waiting, however an hour would often pass and we'd be trying to find a new server because something would get fucked up.
I was a legend 2 and could've gone to legend 3, but I realized how much the grind sucked and that I was no longer playing the game for fun, but rather just to try to get to legend 3 so I could play as the Phoenix Suns gorilla. I decided the prize was no longer worth my time!
It's probably going to go like this...
1. NHL - EASHL
2. Madden - I don't even like the game that much anymore but I enjoy playing in the GAF league as I have been for almost 7 years now
3. 2k - if leagues worked again, that'd be great. But I'm not counting on them. I'll probably do lots of MyPlayer, but after I figure out how the whole career mode algorithm works, I'll lose interest as I usually do.

The combat and combos you can do start to feel more powerful and meaningful at a point, but the general play remains repetitive. Wonder if there's some feature I'm missing that offers a break from continuous killing of easy mobs.
