That was my PvE experience with the Destiny betas and I thought it was shit. But people seem to like this formula for some reason. The gear and customizing your character appealed to me but the gameplay was incredibly shallow.
The PvP mode wasn't bad though.

Yeah it's not a very engaging grind if you play it solo, if you're progressing together with other people though it's a lot more fun.
I had a lot of fun doing raids, dungeon "strikes" and PvP with people I met.

But then I realized that there's special items, and drops, and the only way to aquire them is to just play the same scenarios over and over again and just hope to get lucky.

Fuck that noise. I would almost prefer they just charge for DLC than have to worry about random loot appearing. I understand loot based games but the core of Destiny's mission structure just didn't have enough meat on the bone.
At least with something like GTA Online you're only dealing with in-game currency and there's numerous ways to save up if you want to buy something.

i doubt destiny 2 will be any different, but it'll be a huge release with hundreds of mil of marketing convincing everyone it'll be fun

Destiny does have that thing you're talking about, in game currency and numerous ways to save up to get the stuff you want. The original beta isn't really an accurate representation of how the game is played now.
