My favorite Clippers season happened in 2008–09, when they finished 19–63 and Baron Davis looked six months pregnant. Tim Thomas did everything short of screaming, “I don’t give a shit!” after he bricked 3s.

I'm almost kind of sad the Raptors have to play again tonight. I liked living in this fantasy reality for a few days where I got to tell myself Norman Powell was an .800 shooter. I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess Kidd's going to gameplan for him this time and bring him back down to the mortal realm. When an opposing player is making your announcer's brain melt, you know you have to do something:
I don't know how many Jazz broadcasts you watch (I kind of like their broadcast team so I check them out if nothing else is happening), but he's treated like a demigod there. Like, I'm pretty sure I've never seen a Jazz game where Stockton & Malone didn't come up. I have no doubt the entire state of Utah carpet-bombed his social media 5 minutes after this went up.

I mean, CP3 is "what if Stockton was injury-prone" so I'm really not sure how Simmons puts him over Stockton, but whatever.
Ranking players across eras is difficult and pretty much impossible.
I will say only Celtic fans rank Cousy tbh, dude was putting up points against part time teachers and shit lol.

Simmons' book focuses his praise of Cousy on his influence on the game, but, uhh, Nash and Stockton had a fuckton of influence too.
Do people put Pringles on a top coaches of all time list because Pringles helped create modern basketball?
You can do influence focused rankings, but Simmons only does it with a Celtics player, lol.

I would be interested in an influence focused ranking...
Where do KG, Dirk, and Nash end up in that ranking? What about with Kobe? Kobe was obviously a lot of players favorite player when growing up, but there's few players in the league that try to play like Kobe anymore (mostly just DeRozan?). Whereas like every big man in the last 15 years wanted to be KG or Dirk growing up and many try to play like KG or Dirk. And Nash's offense won, of course.

Kobe only influenced Demar and really any influence that Kobe has should be credited to Michael Jordan anyhow since Kobe aped everything Jordan did.

Why not? Writing a history of NBA coaching would be absurd without him. The guy rewrote the sport and has seen plenty of playoff success (I just ignore what happened in LA & NY - oldBe & Dwight were not the guys for him, and NY has been chewing up hall of fame coaches since Van Gundy left).
I think he gets a ring if Stern doesn't issue that BS Amare suspension.
I think Kobe's influence is going to be all over the shop and still prevalent through the next generation.
But the game has largely moved away from his style of play in the regular season. The same way it has moved from Jordans, who Kobe based a lot of his game on.
I'd say that Kobe's influence is 90% rebranded Jordan influence. Not to take away anything Kobe did. He still did it and led his own brand extremely successfully.

By giririsss Go To PostBooker is a huge Kobe stan too, FYI.
Sure, but does Booker really play much at all like Kobe?
That's the weird thing about Kobe's influence is that a lot of players loved him growing up, but few tried to be like him it seems. This is really different compared to Dirk and KG where young big men both loved those guys and wanted to be like them also.
Asa a Lakers fan it's pretty obvious even to me that Kobe was a lot of these youngers guys favorite growing up because he was the best player in the league while they were in HS/Junior High. No one emulates his game because he took terribly inefficient shots and most coaches wouldn't put up with that shit.
KG and Dirk are way higher on the influence scale. Most PFs and even some C's play like Dirk now, only with less low post scoring.
I don't agree with the bolded, on Kobe's behalf. He had one of his best seasons under Pringles before he blew up.

My point isn't that you can't put Pringles on a top coaches of all time list, it's that it doesn't usually happen in traditional lists and Simmons' list is pretty traditional up until Cousy and then gets traditional again right after Cousy.
Simmons' lists should just be more consistent. Consider influence for each player or don't.

If Rings matter, why isn't Rondo rated higher than CP3?
Simmons is always flawed in these sorts of breakdown articles and rankings because he's incapable of separating his fandom from his analytical brain. I'd almost expect Scalabrine to make a top 10 bigs list if he put one out next week.
Putting CP3 ahead of Payton, Kidd, or Stockton is ridiculous.

The fade post jumper will always be Kobe
His influence is more about work ethic. I think his with ethic and focus have had a huge impact on guys. Being a clown with unfulfilled potential really started to become taboo with more recent generations.

Kobe's lasting influence is reinforcing the idea that Ball is Life. For everyone.
It's also interesting to see his sports drink brand Body Armour being so integrated now.

Facing elimination after two rough games, Kidd makes zero changes to the starting lineup.
