Arsenal must not finish fourth. I'd prefer no CL or EL.
Can't Wenger just win the FA cup and fuck off. Pls.

Press F to Pep.
Hard for me to see any other scenarios than Wenger winning the FA cup + finishing top 4 and staying on for another 2-3 seasons of treading water. Whatever.
I guess he's too old to completely overhaul the squad and restock the young talent, even though he should. I don't really think this core of players is good enough to win the title, let alone a single, solitary knockout round in the CL.
I don't really see how spending big on good-but-not-great players gets us any closer to a world-class squad.
We never replaced Fabregas.

Alright, so what I think we should do close season.
On paper, our best team is probably:
With a back up team (sans The Fosu Awakens and Axl) of:
Now, assuming that Rooney is off for sure, then playing the safe money and guessing that at least one of Smalling and Jones will be off (and I would rather it be Smalling that stays; he's at least had a good season in him and is less injury prone, if not as versatile) with perhaps Young too and maybe Darmian, that leaves a fair few back up options to fill. You could argue Fosu-Mensah could cover right back, but I think Mou sees him as a midfielder going forward. Axel could fill in, but I think we need two CBs really - one younger one like Michael Keane, one older experienced head to fill in when Rojo is injured/take over from him. In an ideal world we buy someone excellent to usurp Rojo, but I'm not entirely sure a) who is good enough and b) who is available. Seen a few Marquinhos links. Sure, I guess?
From our first team, I'm guessing Ibrahimovic is gone, De Gea is off, Mata and Micky will take a lot of each other's game time, Martial won't be consistent enough to start always, and who knows if Shaw is going to win Mourinho over? You could also argue we need upgrades on Rojo and Herrera (as great as their seasons have been, and particularly Herrera I think is underrated by rival fans) as well as seriously looking to start thinking about contingency plans for when Valencia is a year or two older. Players like Blind and Fellaini have their uses, and I wouldn't necessarily want to see them sold because they can do a job and always do if required (fuck Fellaini tonight though). But they absolutely should not be first choice options.
From my point of view, considering who is coming back from loan, I would like to sell/wouldn't mind seeing us sell/think we will sell (RIP Dave ;_;):
Johnstone
Varela
Januzaj
Young
Darmian
Rooney
Ibrahimovic
Jones
De Gea
We should also send Axel and Borthwick-Jackson out on loan (and maybe Tim as well?), and I'm curious to see what we do with Andreas Pereira; could argue he should be given a chance, but he realistically has to get in front of at least Micky, Lingard and Rashford, if not also contending with Mata and Martial and a buy like Griezmann.
That leaves us needing a striker, a goalkeeper and a centre back at an absolute minimum, with arguments for centre midfield, left back and right back. I suppose you could also plop for a nice pacey winger instead of the inside forwards we currently have now, but that would only cut further into Martial and Rashford's game time so I'm not too fussed. If the plan is to play someone like Griezmann behind a new striker, then maybe Martial/Mata are gone? Could be all smoke.
So we'd be looking at
NEW GK (Romero)
Valencia (RB UNDERSTUDY)
Bailly (Smalling/NEW CB)
NEW CB/Rojo (
Shaw/NEW LB) (Blind/Shaw)?
Herrera/NEW CM?
Pogba (Carrick/Fellaini)
Mata/Mkhitaryan
NEW CAM (Lingard)
Martial (Pereira?)
NEW ST (Rashford)
For me, the keeper has to be one of two options: Oblak or Handanovic. I don't think Handanovic has the all round presence of a De Gea, and there's definitely an element of the Casillas about him where his shot stopping sometimes masks some deficiencies, but he'd be cheap enough and he is good enough that I think he'd be better than a lot of other options. Realistically I don't see Oblak and Griezmann coming but if we can get both, excellent. Don't think Pickford has the right experience yet to move to a club like United, good as he is (Everton would be nuts not to go in for him) and someone like Kasper Schmeichel is just out of that top echelon of keepers. Donnarumma too pricey. Happy to listen to any other suggestions, but 1. Oblak or 2. Handanovic would be my choices.
Trying to get a better right back than Tony Valencia will be hard. The guy is as consistent as they come, but he's 31/32 and he'll need replacing soon. I'm not exactly sure who we should be aiming for - my knowledge of back up RBs isn't the strongest in the world - but I wouldn't mind a move for someone like Saints' Cedric would be fine off the top of my head. I'm sure there is cheaper and better alternatives continentally but not sure who #bringbackrafael
Centre backs - I've already said we should sign Michael Keane. He isn't the finished article by a long shot, but he's got a good mentality and dealt well with the pressure starting for England the other week. Take advantage of the sell-on clause we have and get him for £20-25m and I'll be happy. Would love it in a perfect world if we could also take Godin off Atleti as well (curse Simeone for being so fucking good); experienced, master of the dark arts, a leader, a winner, and fucking quality. But I'm not sure who else is in his vein that is available. It might just be that we buy Keane and pray for injury free seasons from Bailly and Rojo.
If Shaw sorts himself out, we are golden for ten years. So much potential it's sickening. Otherwise, we need to be in the market. Seen Mendy's name a few times but I reckon he might be a tad adventurous for Mourinho's liking. I'm reluctant on this one because I desperately want Shaw to win Mou over and prove himself, but in the end if the manager isn't convinced then he isn't convinced. Liked the look of Hysaj at Napoli every time I've seen him (and can play both full back positions) but haven't a clue if he's on the radar nor watched him enough to be sure.
Centre midfield needs to be Naby Keita, Tiemoue Bakayoko or Franck Kessie #bigblacklegs. Seen enough of all three this year to know they're exactly the sort of all rounder that Pogba needs next to him, Herrera 2.0. Keita would probably be my pick of the bunch based on pure talent, but might be too adventurous and leave Pogba doing all the defensive duties. Smart money is Bakayoko, but there will be plenty of teams in for him.
Griezmann for AM. Nuff said there. The dream is real. Up top, from what I've seen I'd rather Belotti than Morata, but the latter's got a good goal record and did well in the CL for Juve a few years ago as well. Chelsea probably in for both those strikers as well, but - despite the fact he's got an incredible scoring record and he's used to the league - I'd hope they took Lukaku. The lad's very good, but his mentality is not right for a club like United in my eyes. Can't see who else is out there right now over the aforementioned two, but if money was no object I'd probably take Belotti, a better fit for Mou's game in my eyes.
That would leave us with a realistic:
But I wouldn't be surprised to see us buy new starters at LB, CB and LW, with a different option altogether up top.
The world is Woodward's oyster. Let him suck it down.

@Bold - left wing is clearly his best position. If he doesn't want to do defensive work he can fuck off entirely. Look at Rashford running channels and pressing from the front. Attitude is so important.

so united has spent like 300m and you still need to replace the entire squad. okay.
also, I can't believe Mata has been at Utd longer than he was at Chelsea. feels like he was a Chelsea staple for ages.

We need to replace a 35 year old who has just done his ACL, a Rooney on the verge of retirement and sell a bunch of players.
It's all about net spend yeah
By bud Go To Postjust read that one fifth of united's passes were long balls.
fascinating.
lol
By Punished Go To PostThat Utd squad would cost about £250m right?
Griez will be 80-90, Oblak 30-40 I'd guess, Bakayoko the same and Belotti probably 70-80 too. Incredible. Leaving the RBs alone for now that's 250-60? Fucking hell we are so rich I didn't even consider prices.
However, I reckon sales wise (probably being fairly optimistic):
Johnstone - 2m
Varela - 2m
Januzaj - 10m
Young - 2m
Darmian - 10m
Rooney - 10m
Ibrahimovic - free
Jones - 10m
De Gea - 60m
that's around 100 or so in.
I'm so sad that Mata hasn't been an Arsenal player for like a decade. And Higuain.
I really wanted to believe that Giroud was every bit as good as Higuain too.

Missed the game but sounds like I didn't miss much. Looking at the table those home draws just look so much more painful.
