If you ever played Virtual On, or Gundam EXVS, or Gunslinger Stratos. It's Nintendo's take on a Arena Action game. It's a really popular genre in Asia.
With proper step cancels and good balanced 2v2 and 1v1, it will be a very fun game.

*I bought it and didn't love it but it's still generally well received.

same, my zelda playing has tailed off. it's a good game but its got some flaws and everytime i start to pick it up, i think about what a huge game it is, and how i'll never finish it, and it ends up staying in its dock.

Hmm, I can get a Japanese E-Shop code for MK8 Deluxe for 49€ from Amazon JP and the game would play in English.

If you are going to carry it around, a case would be good. Try to play with the Joycons on the grip or separate before investing in a Pro Controller.
Zelda and MK8D are the two essential ones at the moment, there are a bunch of good games on the eShop like Snake Pass, Fast RMX and Mr. Shifty but Zelda and MK8D will keep you busy for a long time.

The gameplay is pretty simple and quick. The first run will take you about an hour, but the game is designed with speedrunning in mind and you get three different characters with different play styles.

Edit: You also need to redeem it on a Japanese Nintendo account. You can either create a new one on your switch or temporarily switch the region of your main account.
