Guess that means I need to platinum this game before they add trophies.
I took a wrong turn today looking for homie's sister and ended up,fighting a thunderclaw. Whoever said to turn up the difficulty from normal...it's fine where it is.

Thunderjaws are definitely harder after the new patch. Cant just destroy them with one of their cannons anymore.
Just finished up getting my platinum trophy and Death Stranding easter egg due to being hyped about the upcoming DLC.

Story is pretty good albeit an exercise of sci fi tropes. Hey dawg, imma give your ai with a virus a virus to go with your new air that will also get a virus…or something.. Wish the cast was more well rounded, or play a more prominent role.
Hype warranted.

Finished the game. Feminist AF. Can't wait to see what a comparison to In Search of My Mothers Gardens by Alice Walker would yield.

Brought down the deathbringer and opened up the main story some more last night. Really digging how things are fleshing out.
I'm glad I didn't start playing for a couple weeks. All the impressions about the H vs H combat had me coming in with low expectations and it hasn't been as bad as I was anticipating in that regard. The combat vs robots lives up to the hype as well IMO. Figuring out the weaknesses and tricks to get past some of these situations is rad. A section with (2) sawtooth and (2) belowbacks came to a choke point. I overrode a sawtooth and had him basically take out both the belowbacks while I took out the other sawtooth. I'm sure the situation could have been approached differently too, and I like that.
I agree with (reilo?) whoever said the menu system is kinda jank. It's functional but it's nothing to write home about and at times is confusing.
Visually it's pretty amazing as has been stated. The world is giant in scope and still has plenty of detail. I love the robot design and how it clashes with the rather technologically barren landscape. It runs smooth as as can be. This is all stuff I expect from the Dev though. It's the story and gameplay that was having people look at this with healthy skepticism and I think they showed they can shine.
The sidequests have been fun so far. Mostly because each one has presented a different robot challenge. They work into the story well too. They're still kinda repetitive, though I don't knock open world games for this. I think it's kinda of expected going in. How the game tries to keep the side quests fresh will only improve my already baseline approach. Shit ... my favorite open world game (and one of my favorite overall) last gen was Red Dead Redemption and it suffered from this greatly. Worse than Horizon IMO.

By Bold 2 in One Go To PostI don't know how Guerilla pulled this off, but godamn, this game looks spectacular.it is nuts
Backtracking to do the sidequests. Except for the corruption zones, where the gameplay shines, it's boring. Characters are so...generic.
There's a quest in Witcher 3 where a man can't find his missing wife. Tuns out he's a lycanthrope, and his sister in law lures his wife to him when he's in his den and transformed. You investigate, put him down, and then decide what to do with the surviving sister who wanted the husband to herself. for all the Horizon borrowing from Arkham and Witcher, where is that level of sophistication? Instead, i get some random girl trying to elope with a member of the eclipse, but he gets executed and she does not want to live. Or all the fugitives from this prison all die.
Meh. This platinum is going to be a grind.

By Phoenix RISING Go To PostNVM, I know why Horizon is problematic….illusion of choice.I was fine with the linearity in Horizon. Yeah, there was an illusion of choice with the missions, but i see the option given is how you want your Aloy to react as.
Hell, everything you do ends up with the same conclusion in the end. It's understandable if some dislike it, but for me it was good since it was executed well.

I don't have a problem with linearity. I think too many games are trying for the Deus Ex formula and it's annoying when it fails.
Let me articulate more... from what I posted on the other forum:
I'm at a 9/10. The game is excellent. However:
-Not 60 fps
-There are like, 3 notable characters, and two of them are Aloy of the past and present.
-Melee combat is a joke
-Human combat uses 90s AI
-Combat against machines becomes formulaic once you learn the enemies, minus the three that are essentially damage sponges even after their weak points are gone
-game encourages you to buy one other weapon that isn't a bow and arrow…I played 90% of the game with just that before getting a sling or that rope-down weapon just to try something different
-side quests literally called errands to kill time, lol
-side quests really aren't memorable (because generic / trope characters)
All of that, and I still like the game. Recommended play.
You should see what I have to say when I don't like a game.
Oh and I am Sylens.
Not 60fps strikes me as a criticism borne from crazy expectations
At some point you're gonna have to accept that topped out at 30fps is the standard
Given the platform it's on and the visuals, I'd be inclined to praise the framerate rather than criticise it

I disagree that the game encourages you to buy only one weapon rather than a bow. If the player sees no need to experiment they don't have to. I've personally found scenarios to use each weapon. I love the rope caster and trip caster for example. This kinda related to the comments about Human vs Machine combat. The monsters have weak points to address, but sometimes the scenarios you're tossed in don't let you exploit each enemy in the most efficient way. I'll bring up that instance where I came to a choke point with two sawtooth and two bellow backs. Simply shooting fire at a sawtooth would have lead to me getting wrecked. I had to stealth my way into overriding a sawtooth before engaging in battle. Another instance was during a cauldron. The Thunderjaw in there was super easy if you set up a path where he runs into every blast rope you can cast off of the tripcaster before engaging in combat.
I agree with the side questing though. An issue I think most open world games deal with.

Smokey has the reputation for being a tech guy, but I'm also quick to rebuild my entire PC if I detect drops to 59 FPS. I keep the counter (FRAPS or Steam) to monitor it, too.
I just watched a documentary on Quake as the advent of the modern FPS. With GPUs coming out to push gaming to its limits, the 60 fps standard was born. In 1996. Since I could afford to build my own PCs circa 2005, that has been my standard as well. I'm not lowering it just because I'm playing on a console. I'd rather tone down the visuals if possible.

What I mean is, you actually get a quest to purchase the tripcaster. Because that was the only *required* weapon, I feel that I missed out on a lot of experiences because it wasn't until the end game where I'm invincible that I'm experimenting now when it is not even necessary to do so.
I have not done the cauldron with a thunderjaw in it. First time I saw one of those was the main story mission. Hmm.
I've found the cauldrons to be enjoyable for side quests. The quest won't show up until you get close on a map. The rewards are good too. Overriding a thunderjaw to fuck some shit up for you is hilarious.
I get what you mean more regarding weapons. It would be nice if more than just the hunting quests lead you to try different weapons.

Yeah, I knew the lodges were "beat x score for your reward" and could come back to them in the endgame. I'm certain that had I played them earlier, I would have purchased more weapons sooner.
Cauldrons are cool.
This is one game I'll day-one DLC because I have to see her reconstruct Gia.
Don't know if you guys follow THE LEGEND on Twitter, but looks like his non-stop tweeting of action shots in Horizon Zero Dawn has won him a trip to Guerrilla games.
I'm still grinding for 100%.
Fought an enemy that didn't appear during normal play at a quarry. Got the achievement for my beastarity.
Opened up the Hunters Lodge. Dude is prejudiced because Aloy is a savage, not because of her youth or gender.
Stumbled upon another side quest where I saved some slaves. The game touches on labor and human sacrifice, but not the things that come with human trafficking...one girl even said it was WORTH going into slavery to kill this dude.
That is still mindfucking me

You mean the girl who is the whole point of the quest? The girl who left her family and people to kill the dude even though she knew she wouldn't be welcome back? Yeah, she's hell bent on revenge so if it meant the dude died she's gonna say it was worth it.
Picking this up tomorrow. I'm a sucker for post apocalyptic shit so this should be right up my alley.

Don't even remember. It was on a list of quests and I was nearby so I finished it. She's one out of a half dozen Nora who left the sacred lands to do something and not be welcomed back.

We topped their killzone 2 tournament and were supposed to go to Amsterdam to play their top bois but the invitation never materialized. Stung, but not as much as missing the mgo world finals at the Tokyo game show by 3 fucking tickets
So I started this up last night, the story grabbed me immediately but I'm so bad at dual analog aiming that I can barely play. Had a hard time taking down the very first thing you get to shoot at in the tutorial. Playing Zelda with gyro for 200 hours made me even worse than I normally am. There really is no reason for a PS4 exclusive to not support gyro controls.
Anyone know if there's a way to play with kb+m?

Finished the game last night and am two small trophies away from the plat. (Knock down those dummies and one more strike from above) I should have that tonight.
Story:
I enjoyed the story. A lot actually. I do see how the illusion of choice could be a negative though. They need to flesh out the choices you're given and make those choices have a more direct impact on the games progression. Branching might be a lot to ask for in the first game of a new IP considering what they made, but it's something they should shoot for in the sequel IMO. Even something like the Witcher story branching would be cool. That being said, I really did love the story. Going into the game I wondered how this world with robot dinosaurs could be, and I was pleasantly surprised with the results. I thought it was an interesting take on end times that I haven't heard before. I'm a sucker for sci fi apocalyptic stuff though. One thing that did bother me with the story was the very very end when setting up the sequel. I don't understand how an AI that was overridden could escape it's shell and travel to where Sylens is. On top of that, what's Sylens motive here? He fully admitted he was foolish when dealing with Hades originally. He clearly regretted that decision and he clearly didn't want everything to come to an end. He realized his thirst for knowledge led him to a bad place. So while I realize Sylens is willing to do some shitty stuff to gain knowledge, I question why he would repeat mistakes he knew he made. I guess the expansion will answer this? Anyone have any thoughts? Maybe I missed something? Is Sylens already dead?
Gameplay:
Pretty similar sentiments that most of you have expressed. The human vs human combat isn't good. I had low expectations going into the game, so I didn't hate that aspect, but it wasn't anywhere near as good as the human vs robot battles. The game really shines here. I"m so so so glad I did all of the Cauldrons before completing the game and a bunch of other side stuff. Overriding robots adds a huge element to each battle going in. There was one quest where I had to take down three behemoths. They were being followed by three of those crab dudes. I stealthed up on a crab guy and overrode his ass. He agro'ed the other crab dudes and the behemoths. I ran off to the distance picked a single behemoth off with the precision arrow, tied him down with the rope caster when he approached and then overrode his ass. He then fucked everything up for me before he died and I picked the other two behemoths off easily. If I didn't beat the cauldron I could have won by going in guns blazing, but I didn't have as much fun doing that. I had a great time assessing my future battle, laying out traps and zip lines if need be and using the override function to sway things in my favor.
I thought the game controlled well. I like the fast travel pack you can buy and I thought travel via mount worked (coming from the Witcher to this made it incredibly noticeable). I think they also need to do more with customization and items for any future installments. Other than crafting ammo I found most of the salvageable items to be pretty useless if you're not selling for shards. Later in the game you have enough shards that crafting ammo isn't needed unless in a pinch. The modifications were cool but also need to be further fleshed out. Half way through the game it seemed like you should have all the best weapons and have them loaded up with good modifications by then too. They needed to add another level of weapons and possibly another level of modifications. Maybe a red modification that's more well rounded and less specific. Increase the odds that a modification will roll more than one or two stats so I feel the need to farm and min / max my bow and armor. I also though the menu system was kinda clunky. It took me a while to get used to. These quips are minor to me though. They're just ways I think the game can be built upon to be made even more special.
Questing:
It's an open world game and it suffers from the same things that hinder most open world games. I felt the side quests themselves were good and advanced the plot some, but there was redundancy in quite a few as well. The flowers, figures and other collectibles for trophies and mods were fun and some of the vantages made for some awesome landscapes to look at, but these were also redundant. Doing the side quests as you progress takes away from the main story IMO. I would progress the story. If the next story quest was say level 18, I made sure to complete all the other side quests that were of lower level before moving on. That might be my fault but I don't like going through an open world after I've beaten the story just to do side quests for trophies. Cauldrons were my favorite. I liked the different battles at the end of each and the payoff was super good here. Way more useful than any mod. Anyway one of my favorite games ever is Red Dead and it suffered from these quips more than Horizon did IMO.
Graphics:
great googly moogly my old school PS4 cried because it didn't know what it was capable of until this game opened. The lush landscapes and massive draw distances combined with a smooth steady frame rate was something to see. Especially in an open world. I thought the character design was great and thought the robot design was even better.
lol ... they scrapped gyro controls way back when they realized it was shit during the PS3. The controller isn't made for motion control and the developers weren't using the tech for anything but cheap gimmicks.

Shaky trash
Finally beat it. Hell of a ride, entertaining and smart quality story/plot, good gameplay mechanics outside of a few issues.
I wish the game would offer you better opportunities to be tactical and figure out a smarter way to lay out traps, because when shit hits the fan especially against something like a Desthrbinger it just basically devolved to a shooter and you gotta take advantage of cover, but it lacks any sort of cover mechanic so it doesn't really have much of the way of engaging enemies like that in a more tactical way.
Hyped for the sequel!

New, free update adds New Game+, harder difficulty and more.
We were so excited to be able to announce the upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn expansion, The Frozen Wilds, at E3 last month. As we were wrapping Horizon Zero Dawn, we had a lot of ideas for new characters, quests, and places for Aloy to discover, so we started to develop The Frozen Wilds. We can’t wait for you to experience the dangerous frigid lands to the north!https://blog.us.playstation.com/2017/07/06/horizon-zero-dawn-patch-1-30-adds-new-game-face-paint-options-ultra-hard-difficulty-more/
While we’re hard at work on The Frozen Wilds, we have also been working on something else…
As of today, you can download patch 1.30 which includes additional fixes to progression issues which some of you may have encountered. However, it also includes the highly anticipated New Game+ option.
With New Game+ you will be able to relive the adventures of Aloy without losing your character progression and your collected inventory. You won’t be able to progress beyond the level cap of 50, but you can still collect XP during your adventure.
We have also added updated versions of existing weapons and outfits with an extra modification slot at your disposal. These will not come cheap and will set you back some extra shards.
Also ... just read Reilo's post about the traps. They need to let you throw them out, even if it's just a short distance, when you set them.
