By chandlerparsons Go To PostAdding Anderson, Gordon, Nene and D'Antoni had people (myself included) thinking Houston were going to be WOAT in defense. I didn't realise that shooting was the be all, end all of talent. Neither did Vegas, ESPN or the majority of SLAENT who thought OKC would finish above Houston.Scrolling through the slaent it's pretty split who people thought finished above who. Most outside of Dy didn't have the Rockets with homecourt tho...
Two seasons ago, Harden was MVP runner-up after Houston finished at the top of a SW division where every team made it into the playoffs. I was told back then that it didn't matter who was around him (he was carrying the likes of Joey Dorsey, Motiejunas, Papanikolaou and Nick Johnson) because the Warriors (who had another All-NBA / All-Star player and two All-Defensive players) had the better record. Now I'm being told that Houston's record doesn't matter because Westbrook has nobody around him. Which is it?
It's never a solid about who can win the MVP record plays a huge deal into it tho and that's why Russ will most likely be 3rd in the voting...
Also didn't they have Howard on the Rockets?
Curry put up some super efficient numbers (moreso for his 2nd MVP than his 1st tho but still damn good)
How I think the landscape of the league plays into... Russ' big O numbers are going to be hard to ignore since the league hasn't seen anything like it for 50+ years

Hield in March:
15, 4, 2
48/45/84
The Kings winning themselves into just outside of Tatum and Smith range would be so fucking Kangs though

Hawks without Millsap is worth fighting for the 2nd seed for. Can't see him grinding out this injury with a contract looming.

NBA could do with better thread titles.
Cant really see how Kwahi isnt the lead candidate for MVP (obviously bias as a spurs fan and cant watch that many games of other teams due being the UK but wateva), like offensively is there REALLY much to choose from between Harden, Westbrook and Kwahi? Yeah the stats may show the others being leagues ahead but that really is down to our playstyle and those guys being almost the SOLE go to guys on the team in terms of PPG.
But as a both way player, man its not really close. Name me three clutch defensive plays either of those guys have made this season?
Both the Rox and Thunder would be trash without their MVP candidates. Either is a worthy winner imo.
I do feel like averaging a triple-double should be some kind of separate award, sort of like the Triple Crown in baseball. It deserves recognition of some kind.
Hard to give it to anyone on the Spurs when they've been so consistent as long as Pop has been there. Duncan was productive until the end of his career but they don't appear to miss him.
I think the Spurs would still be solid if Kawhi went down.

Spurs will get wacked in the playoffs and then people will realize that roster isn't anything special.
Yea I'm not going as far as Gondo. I've got Kawhi as #2 on my list.
I think co-mvp between harden and Westbrook would be well deserved though. Then id favor Kawhi to win it next year

While this is true, this doesnt take away from the fact kwahi been the best both way player in the NBA.
By Kidjr Go To PostWhile this is true, this doesnt take away from the fact kwahi been the best both way player in the NBA.That's what I'm saying. Kawhi's MVP campaign is very impressive and he's carrying that roster to 60 wins.
Kawhi isn't generating nearly the amount of offense Harden is. The gap there is about as big as the gap between their defense, imo.

That's no accident or coincidence. Bliss is part of a new breed of NBA assistant coaches that have fueled the boom of young talent in the league. With teams spending increasingly less time on the practice floor and rest becoming a valued commodity, front offices have started searching for alternate ways to bring along their youngest players. One possible counter, teams have found, is to fill their coaching and video departments with young and spry former players like Bliss, assistants who boast both brains and brawn, who can help both off the court and on.
"Being big, guys like that can bang in practice with your bigs, especially with teams like ours whose main guys don't practice a lot," an assistant general manager of a veteran-laden team told Bleacher Report. "Those assistants, they can step in and help your young guys learn."

Co MVP former teammates 2017, MVP 2014 all played together and we're broken up over a relatively small amount of money and for Lamb
Gondo shouldn't sleep at night and that's facts jfc
By DY_nasty Go To Postharden doesn't even play defenseHe is an average or slightly below average defender this season, from all reports. Westbrook's defense is a step lower than Harden's this season.
You know, one thing people never ask: If the Sonics never get sold and never move to OKC, do the Sonics have Durant/Harden/Westbrook on their roster in 2017?
By livefromkyoto Go To PostHe's actually shockingly high in defensive win shares:That's a pretty garbage stat, unfortunately, as Drummond is on the list, along with Westbrook and Curry. A fifth of that list being average, at best, defenders isn't a good look. IIRC, it highly values rebounds which is why all those guys but Curry is on there (he gets it through his high number of steals).
By livefromkyoto Go To PostHe's actually shockingly high in defensive win shares:"Andre Drummond"
defensive win shares can sit in the corner
By Kibner Go To PostHe is an average or slightly below average defender this season, from all reports. Westbrook's defense is a step lower than Harden's this season.so is kawhi an average or below average offensive player?
Kawhi is averaging 26PPG on 48.6FG%, 37.2 3PT%, 88.8FT% (8FTA) on consecutive 61TS% seasons with a .271 WS/48. He's elite offensively.

By DY_nasty Go To Postso is kawhi an average or below average offensive player?
He is not a good distributor, though. Which is why I said he doesn't generate nearly the offense Harden does. Of all the players with 30+ USG% this season, he is ninth out of ten players in AST/g and AST/100 possessions.
I think the difference there matches their gap in defense.
All of those dudes are PGs or SGs playing PG outside of Cousins. Kawhi just doesn't play that Point-Forward position in Pop's system like other SFs do.
By reilo Go To PostYou know, one thing people never ask: If the Sonics never get sold and never move to OKC, do the Sonics have Durant/Harden/Westbrook on their roster in 2017?No. It's hard to imagine the old regime drafting Westbrook or Ibaka, who were both considered iffy for their draft position at the time.
Also, they might not have gotten Durant without blowing it up after Bennett bought the team in 2006. It's entirely possible that Schultz would have opted to keep the Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen core together.
Who knows about Harden. That's too far down the alternate timeline.
lmao
Not only did Gondo steal a team, said team had 3 MVP calibur players at the same time. It's incredible.

By LA Times Go To PostOct. 25, 2006: NBA approves Howard Schultz's sale of the SuperSonics and Seattle Storm to an Oklahoma City group led by businessman Clay Bennett for $350 million.
By Smokey Go To PostlmaoI'm at peace with where the team is. This season has been arguably as much fun and less stressful than any season since 2010 when they shot up from 23 to 50 wins overnight.

The Harden trade was a big miscalculation obviously, but the team was still a contender every year after that before injuries and Klay got in the way.
And I think it's safe to say that it's pretty unprecedented for a team to be as decent as we are after losing a player the caliber of Durant. And there's still room to improve in the future with the youth and flexibility built into our roster.
It's a fun team to follow and having the NBA has been a massive boon to my city. I'm not losing sleep over what could have been.
