By giririsss Go To PostThe team has largely stagnated is my point. And if he was a very good coach, he would have found a way to avoid that. Particularly post season.I doubt any coach overcomes losing your star player 2 years in a row in the playoffs.
As a GM he's been well below average. But as a Coach he's been largely Average. The clippers have had their issues, firing of sterling, CP3 injuries, blake injuries. They've treaded water through that. So, average.
Austin Rivers has seemingly developed under him, and DJ is playing in his role. But that's about it. Those are the two "accomplishments" he's added to an existing 55+win team.
Which for a veteran coach in his 4th year isn't exactly a stand out return. (Particularly for his salary demand).
I'm not going to pretend to be a Voges fan, i'm not. But he seemingly maxed out the talent in Indiana. Got lance to play sane for a year, "Developed" PG13 (as much as we can say DJ developed under Doc). And largely had the buy in of his players.
I'm not sure Doc is a positive move forward, as much as he is a name hire.
But Orlando NEEDS positive news.
Also losing your other star the year before last as well..
Despite not have Blake for 1/4 of his time there almost and players getting hurt at key times it is kind of hard to put that on Doc.
I know the axe has to fall on someone and it is going to be on him but it is not because he is an overrated coach that couldn't overcome what no coach could be expected to overcome.
DJ has really blossomed under him.. He turned from a decent roleplayer to an impact player... not a star but a player who does change a game with his presence.
Vogel is a fuckball coach, I guess we won't know if he is anything more than that until he has a bit more talent on a team.. but man is his offense ugly.
Doc could be good for a youngish team like the Magic but they have WAY bigger problems than thinking about upgrading their coach.
So how does Spoelstra gets seen as a coach now with turning this team of nobodies into wins? Going from how he was perceived as a fairly average or not really great Doc Tier coach during the big Miami years.

If players buy into his system they seem to do really well.. Even LeBron played his best basketball so far under him.. 2012-2014 are his best years to date (he pretty close to those years this year tho...) but he was doing it at PF under Spo.. It is too bad they couldn't have made this run earlier, however they still might make the playoffs and everything..

Spo has copped a lot of blame unfairly because people know it's pointless gunning for Riley. Spo has been a well above average to very good. He adapts to his players, doesn't seem to force systems, takes new ideas, and develops what he can out of players.
He made an offensive system that largely preserved wade/bosh/lbj and saved them for their play off runs. And didn't degrade the culture of the organisation to suit stars (I'm still amazed how people forget LBJ's fire spo campaign and regularly calling spo out on live tv, assuming riley would choose him).
I think him getting the best out of the current bunch solidifies that Miami could lock him up long term, and be just fine.
I'm not putting him on any all time list. But I'd struggle to name 10 better active coaches.
(Pop.... then guys like Snyder, Stevens, Spo, Budenholzer, Stotts? Mike Malone?, Carlisle, It's also easy to add Kerr.)

By blackace Go To PostHe has looked a lot worse as a coach this year without Walton and adding Mike Brown..And i'll say it, with out Gentry there as an assistant the offense really doesn't seem as .. fluid.
Maybe Gentry isn't a head coach (i still say it's hard to judge anything on his time at the pels), but he is a very good assistant.
I wonder how much of it is them not revealing anything before the play offs, versus just not having as versatile a roster.
The Warriors leaking stories about how they were offended that the Thunder didn't roll out the red carpet for Durant when he returned the first time.
Guarantee this is Durant and his reps speaking anonymously through the team. He already showed that he cares way more than he should about what people think of him. Skip Bayless got to him ffs.

Is Durant stupid or just socially unaware? What the fuck did he expect?

Spo is already tied with Carlisle for the longest-tenured coach in the league after Popovich. He definitely bought himself some serious credibility with this run, he could be in Miami for a really long time.

Weathering that storm to win two titles is still his greatest accomplishment but this season is impressive as hell too.
On March 12th, the Jazz said Favors had another bone bruise and that they would re-evaluate him at the end of the week.
They have released no updates about Favors since then and the week is over.
This team fucking lies and obscures so much and it's annoying as shit.

It wasn't until this or the prior season that the Pels changed from doing that exact kind of thing. It somehow makes all the injuries worse because you have hope that someone is going to come back on time and be good to go when they do.

Favors or no I'm watching Pacers/Jazz tonight for no other reason than those are two of the best pbp teams in the league.
They actually said he would be re-evaluated , not that they would release updates. They said "Further updates will be provided when appropriate." AKA.. nothing has changed.
If they have re-evaluated him, they can give an injury update. Even if the update is just "sorry, we're still not sure."

Watching DraftExpress vids from 5 months ago of Malik Monk of Kentucky... is it just me, or do I see "shorter, less explosive Russell Westbrook?"
Not even sure if he still has those strengths/weaknesses nymore, but I know this dude can sky.

By IWMTB19 Go To PostBoler has given Gordon Hayward the nickname of "The Dunkster."It could be worse, you could not know the difference between a bounce pass and a skip pass.
LFK is part of the problem.
In trying to figure out where teams will land the next couple of weeks, here is news u can use:
Stupid Boston.
Also: Jazz players being called a "Jazz man" is at some undefined coordinate on the weird/lame axis.
But! There are so many pbp/colour guys who offer only the most surface of analysis in this sport (like, is diagramming plays illegal or something?) that anybody who can do arcane things like notice a guy making a good pass with his off hand or see a play developing before it happens or just goes beyond "gotta feed the big man" and "ball movement is important" is generally worthwhile.

By masud Go To PostI'm not even picky just give me one of those guards projected in the top 10 or Jackson.
are people really that high on Frank Jackson? i know he was down in the pecking order but i really didn't see anything special w/ him.

Portland owns their own destiny at this point if they wanna make the playoffs. Failure to do so will be on them.
Going to the Celtics/Wiz game tonight. Praying that IT2 gets cleared, he skipped out on the Sixers/Nets games so he should be good to go.
RE: Doc - the team has stagnated largely because the roster has stagnated. Swapping out a few mediocre backup SFs and leaning on Crawford late in games wasn't ever going to push this team over the hump. Doc the GM screwed Doc the coach. They're still a very good team at times that can scare people, but I wouldn't be surprised if they caught a gentleman's sweep in the first round either.

Damn, both OKC and the Clips have way easier schedules than the Jazz. We gonna lose homecourt for sure.

I think the Jazz are better than both the Thunder and the Clippers. You guys should be fine.

My sentiment exactly..... If we move up (minor miracle) and its not #1 grab jackson if we stay in 5-7 range Monk, Ntilikina, or Fox...... Then tank again next year
By Doomsayer Go To PostI think the Jazz are better than both the Thunder and the Clippers. You guys should be fine. Not with Favors and Hood out we aren't, we can usually get by without Hood unless Joe Johnson just looks old (he looks fantastic in 2+ day rest games) but Diaw is washed AF.. a one legged Favors is way better. The Clips still have a really great net rating with CP3 healthy, and OKC has been pretty damn good since that trade.
Still think the 6 is most likely for us (and we'd have a puncher's chance against Houston but probably less than 30%), but anything above that would be a nice bonus.
That stupid stretch to start March with 2 losses to Portland (home and away) and road losses to Phoenix and Dallas probably doomed us. A 10-3 finish would get us to 50 wins though. That would also really boost Russ's chances at winning MVP.
Crazy that a dude who will probably average a triple double is the underdog for MVP.

10-3 finish with more road than home games and a +1.2 Net Rating competition? Wishful thinking, imo. OKC is the worst road team of anyone in the Top 8 as of today.
I realize it's probably wishful thinking. We'll probably win a couple we shouldn't and lose a couple we shouldn't to finish between 46 and 48 wins.

Nurkic being a dick didn't help.

Some guys just refuse to buy into being a backup. And being paid millions to.
Sucks, but is what it is.
Certain roles just aren't meant for certain players. Jokic has been labeled as the next greatest and brightest (rightfully so), but I can't imagine that being beneficial to a player that has the skillset as Nurkic (almost identical if not outright so to Jokic's), and it ended up being a question of whom they valued more. Even when he did start for Denver, he never averaged more than 20-22mpg and never started for longer than a month at a time.
It could also be that Stotts's offense and the Blazers teammates are a better fit for Nurkic.

Well. Jokic forced his playing time. Jokic was too good to keep off the floor. Nurkic just didn't.
It could certianly be a personality clash, though.
