By data Go To Postone of my favorite games of all time has a 68-70 metacriticI feel a lot of stuff that ppl call shit today would be considered something decent or good if you go over a decade back in time. Like 68-70 was considered good (but with some problems) 12-15 years ago while something below 5 then was considered shit. But yeah who cares except a bunch of nerds.
like who fucking cares

I wonder how many people freaking out over the review previously posted the 'he cnat keep getting away with this gif' in other threads
By data Go To PostThat thread is a really good snapshot of what I mean by the fervor around Zelda reviews. Like people say its a symptom of fanboys and gaming reviews but no man, Zelda is different. Something about Zelda getting bad reviews just makes people buckwild, to an even bigger degree than Naughty Dog, Rockstar, Blizzard whatever else fans.Nintendo fans are very sensitive about the flagship games... But Zelda and Mario are the ones..
It's not even a Nintendo thing. It's a Zelda specific thing. It's like Zelda getting a 98 metacritic changed their lives.
By DY_nasty Go To PostWhat I tell yal about talking bad about NintendoYeah we were pretty spot on about that.. but I knew from reviewing..
People are wilding about the reviews for a high profile game. Water is wet.
That said, he's straight up wrong about how shrines operate in the game (you don't need to do anything but touch them and you can warp back to them). The comparison to ubisoft's use of towers is odd too, considering how they turn into puzzles and you don't actually need them to do a damn thing in BOTW. I wish I had to think half as much when scaling shit in Ubi's games. Annnndd needing high level gear to get to Hyrule castle is false af. The guardians can be killed with a lvl 1 pot top (the tutorial gives you practice for it).
The rest of his review is fair game. Stamina is going to make or break things for people, even if there is a ton of options to mitigate it.
The end of the review seems like ish jazzed up to poke a beehive...

I honestly couldn't give a fuck about fanboy nonsense (if that's what it came across as, not my intention). Same shit happened with GTA IV, which held the record before BOTW. Let GTA VI come out to the same fanfare as this Zelda game and two people decide to be "critical" the scenario plays out the exact same way.
Only reason reviewers weren't catching hell for having negative opinions on FF 15, is due to 13.
It is indicative of a larger problem when it comes to Nintendo and Rockstar and the like. What Blackace and DY said in the past is true.
edit: Now that I think about it, they came for him over a recent high profile game too. No Man's Sky, IIRC. People are loons.

Use any shield and reflect the beam back at them. It does an absurd amount of damage to the bigger ones and the miniature ones (outside of the strength challenges) get one shot by it. Parrying the laser doesn't break shields.
Edit: To be fair, I haven't beaten the game yet. So, I have no clue how hard Ganon is. The other shit though (outside of Lyonel)...Nah.

I'm not sure I agree with this. Not that there aren't crazy Zelda fans who take it way too seriously, that's evident. But GTA is the biggest thing in gaming, with an audience 3x as large as Zelda's, and for many fans it's almost the only thing they play. If you want to talk about reviewers being afraid to give bad reviews, GTA IV is the poster child for that. It's not at the top of metacritic because it's the best thing ever made, it's because review sites saw a one-time chance for attracting a large audience though coverage and didn't want to piss off fans (or Rockstar). This isn't my opinion, listen to the Giant Bomb guys and their stories from the Gamespot days when a GTA would hit and they were assigned articles like "the tires of GTA" because they had to hit daily GTA content quotas and had to maintain favoured status with the publisher.
The fervour around TLoU was similar. I think that game was incredible, but anybody criticizing it was furiously shouted down - in no small part, I suspect, because it was a first-party standard bearer, and the capper for the PS3 turnaround narrative. I cape for Uncharted, but I fully get the critiques for the most part, especially after having played RotTR. But 'other site' had UC4 attack squads and voted it GOTY hands down.
I haven't finished the game yet, but I'm perfectly comfortable with the idea of Breath of the Wild as the best Zelda game. It's not inventing the wheel the way Ocarina did - but I don't set that as a bar because nothing else really has since then, it would take a new design paradigm, maybe when somebody makes the truly great VR game that sets the standard for how that medium will function. If BotW doesn't click with somebody that's fine, there are lots of critically acclaimed games that I'm never going to sit down and play either. But I can't take seriously the perspective of a professional reviewer who can't see just how much it's more than the sum of any isolated parts. Combining all those integrated systems with that vast, well designed world and Ghibli vibe, the sheer density of things to do, the raw sense of discovery, and the crazy unexpected emergent happenings that will make this one of the most streamable games ever - all tied together with fluid, well done gameplay. Nobody's ever pulled anything like that off before, and it outweighs a frame rate drop or whether there was a jankier, superficially similar gameplay element in a Ubi game in the past (and to their credit, the developers were up front about their inspirations). For individual gamers, hey, play what you want. I sure do. But if you want to pitch yourself as somebody who makes their living off their perspective on game design, don't look at one of the most monumental overall achievements a design team has ever hit and tell me it's mediocre within the broader perspective of gaming history. I just can't take you seriously.
Those games were mass appeal though.
There's a strong argument that any Switch or Wii U owner is already indoctrinated.

Is there a difference? In terms of over-identifying with a videogame game or its parent platform and pinning your emotional well being on its success, I think we can absolutely find plenty of those people in GTA/Overwatch/various console first party fandoms. If anything, Nintendo positions itself as attempting to be more mass appeal than any of them, which is likely what generates a good deal of the heat in this particular discussion. A lot of self-identified gamers see Nintendo as not-for-them, or aimed at children, which they are desperately trying to prove they are not. There's a great number of people who are emotionally (or even financially, if we're talking about youtubers) invested in shooting Nintendo and their software down. I think that creates a circle the wagons mentality among people who like Nintendo that exacerbates the debate. Lately Microsoft's gotten the same thing, but they don't appear to have as strong a brand identification among their customer base so the pushback hasn't been as fervent.
I don't know how we ever enjoyed videogames before. I'm glad BotW has come along and gotten us out of this gaming ghetto.

That's exactly what it is, but supposedly a lot better. Some new 'Battle Royale' genre in the making.
h1z1 is fukkery--just basically a mod
there hasn't really been a true 100% finished battle royale game released to my knowledge, could be wrong though

Exactly one year after the record-breaking ‘Tom Clancy’s The Division’ (still the biggest launch within any Q1 on record), Ubisoft now debut at No1 on the All Formats Top 40 (Units) with ‘Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands’, the biggest week 1 launch of the year so far. In terms of week 1 debut units ‘Wildlands’ is No2 in a very long list of Tom Clancy games, pushing Ghost Recon stablemate ‘Future Soldier’ down from No4 to No5 in the Tom Clancy games week 1 sales pecking order. The aforementioned ‘Horizon: Zero Dawn’ for PS4 only drops to No2 having claimed the record of top-selling launch week game of the year so far - a record that lasted only 1 week. The second big new release debuts at No3 and is Warner’s budget-priced ‘LEGO Worlds’ for PS4/Xbox One.
You'd be an idiot to think it wouldn't sell
The structure and having 'Ubisoft' plastered on it ensured that it'd do okay. Especially now that the generation is in full swing, and there are so many PS4s and Xbox Ones out there
Still shit tho

By EldritchTrapStar Go To PostBruh…how on Earth is Zelda not mass appeal at this point in our lives? The people that will buy a console JUST for a specific title are the extreme minority too... that minority is loud as hell and is more than used to screaming down criticism whether it has merit or not. The most casual of casual gamer loving GTA to the "games as art, yay/nay?" conversation fellating itself over TLOU doesn't line up with Zelda at all.
I mean if that isn't pure loyalty on display and inherent bias then I don't know what is. For all the shit CoD fans get, they're nowhere near as committed to the cause as Zelda and Mario.
It might be a great game and all but let's be cereal.

I don't want to put words into your mouth, but are you trying to insinuate that Mario isn't mass appeal too? This isn't Metroid. Both series have existed in a space in pop culture, where only games like Halo, COD, GTA, Final Fantasy and Metal Gear exist in (back in the day, Resident Evil). Neither series is niche, and at one point in time every single one of them caused people to choose a platform. Following this train of thought, one could say Halo doesn't have mass appeal either, and everyone here knows that's simply not true.
Take Mario for example. They put it on IOS and what happened? It wasn't just diehard nintendo console fans that had that shit sitting in the top 5 on ios. This happened in a space where F2P reigns supreme. Fire Emblem doesn't come anywhere close to the stature of Mario, and yet...they're making bank the minute they decided to put it on a platform that has little to do with Nintendo. Brand recognition means a hell of a lot. Zelda not doing GTA numbers is obvious for one reason: it's not multiplat. Let them put a Zelda game on IOS/Android and this discussion dies instantly.
Some shit transcends console fanboyism and sales. I don't understand how a series as big as this (with a brand strong enough to sell spotty hardware) that has existed and thrived since the 80's could even begin to be looked at as anything other than having mass appeal.
Zelda is a weird one in the UK, there seems to be very little fanfare around it in retail, but its obviously popular
Maybe that's skewed by the decline of Nintendo's shelf-space since the first couple of years of the Wii though
