By livefromkyoto Go To PostIt's design is actually a revolutionary take on the open world formula, which is why every major dev had a meeting talking about it this year. The way it guides you to (or hints at) discoveries through the world is really organic compared to the 'here's all the dots on the map in your area' way that type of design has been handled in the past. They did a great job curating the design of that world, one I'm not sure that many devs will have the time/resources/talent to copy. This is what makes BOTW great. Could care less about the go straight to the boss stuff.
And maybe the most important thing was just how alive they made the world feel. I played through mist of the game with family, and people walking by who don't even care about video games would just stop, sit down and be entranced by it.
When I say Nintendo NAILED exploration, they really, really fucking did. Nothing touches it imo.
Everything is designed around the world. Even the little things like the way the korok puzzles are integrated into the world, the way it rewards exploration and climbing is crazy.
You actually feel like youre discovering shit rather than going to a question mark on the map. Fuck The Witcher 3 btw, trash game.
This sounds super nintendo but I'm 80 hours in and the world and exploring it is simply, magical
I dont really feel like BOTW is some formula you can copy, everything feels so hand crafted its crazy.
I've just been running around too. I dont want to even use the horse(horse controls are low key trash anyway) so I dont miss anything.
I've never done that before.

Still figuring out the map for best possible sniper's nest.
How many y'all have it on pc?
Maybe we got enough to resurrect the PUBG thread?
Also are items randomized per round?
Miramar is snipers paradise. Itemized are randomized but there are certain towns or areas that are known to produce better loot. Google it and you should see results for both maps.
And yes for whatever reason there's more cheaters in 3rd person view than first.

The funny thing is I actually couldn't have felt less interested in going after any of those side quests or exploring lol. The idea of scaling that mountain and dealing with the annoying stamina issues--naw I'm good. Or side quests like "can you hook me up with some prime meat?" for instance. I acknowledge that some people felt an allure to the world, but I found zero compelling reasons to seek out the emergent gameplay aspects of the game. Part of that is because some of the core aspects of the game used in seeking that stuff out is not great--weapon and armor degradation, unforgiving stamina bars that make tackling getting from A to B in some instances to be a headache, etc.
It doesn't help that I started to become really really tired of stuff like the shrines after a while. These awkward puzzles that I felt were solvable by Toddlers but I had to deal with just to build my characters stats. After like 15 I was completely done with that shit.

Idk, the game gives you so many tools to overcome stuff you mentioned like stamina and weapon degradation that they arent ever an issue past the first area of the game(which is the most boring part of the game)

How has BotW revolutionized anything? You could certainly argue that it pushed the open-world genre forward-ish in some ways, went about certain things in a way that feels somewhat fresh, but 'revolutionized'? Por favor.

It didn’t, it just didn’t hold the player’s hand which is revolutionary for modern Nintendo (and unheard of for some other devs). In the process of that, they happened to make a fucking fantastic open world game that actually had a purpose for the open world tied into the gameplay.
Superb game, really. I could felate it all day, but even I don’t understand the excessive praise it gets in some regards.
By Pennywise Go To PostJust be aware that Kiwami is only gonna be half of that game.I just beat it, I liked it but nowhere near 0.
It's a remake after all, but they added quite a bit of extras (that mini car racing game and more storylines that tie into 0).
I’d gladly fight Kuze 6 times than fight the bosses in this game, they’re all pretty lame. No one was as badass as Kuze, Awano or Shibusawa. Best Majima too
Also fuck that penultimate boss fight. Literally the worst shit ever. Luckily I maxed out a lot of my powers but I’m not sure it’s beatable on hard without L1 + triangle in Dragon style.
I don't have much experience with Nintendo games, but the Super Mario game I got with my WiiU did not held my hand at all.
Or maybe I just suck at Mario.

It's getting embarrassing. People are getting exposed left and right in this thread.
This game is cleaning house in GOTY awards by like the biggest margin ever, in what was a great overall year for games. There have been miles and miles of text and hours and hours of podcast discussion in excruciating detail about why it's special. How are you guys in here saying "I don't get it" or "it's just {game X}" or "it's just Nintendo fans" still?
If it's not anyone's thing that's fine, I don't care about LoL or Minecraft or any number of important games. But to try and play it off like it's nothing...come on now. We're veering into ridiculous-town here.

Like I said, genuinely think it was a great game. Best of last year? If I had to choose, yeah, it was really that good.
Revolutionary though, hmm?
Half Life 2 was revolutionary back in it’s day for it’s physics engine and the freedom it gave to players to use it how they see fit, along with physics based puzzles too.
BotW takes that idea and builds an open world around it’s own physics engine. It works, it’s fun and it’s makes for an overall superb game, but it’s not revolutionary as it’s just the same idea put into a new genre.
It’s not a bad thing that it’s been done before, nor is about which game did it best. It’s just that BotW’s biggest accomplishments aren’t new or a revolution in game design. They’re old ideas brought back and repurposed.
The physics engine was an example, another example would be the similarity between the climbing in BotW and the climbing in Shadow of the Colossus. They’re similar enough that I’d comfortably say there’s some inspiration being taken there, and with it the gameplay mechanic of climbing large enemies has been repurposed to climbing large, well, anything.
Lastly, the overall freedom given to the player in BotW, it’s not a new concept. It’s an amazing concept that has been prevalent throughout open worlds and games in general for as long as it’s been technically possible to programme.
Somewhat lost over the last half decade with the prevalence of open world games that have flooded the market, but I shouldn’t have to name drop a single game for you will have already played at least a handful of games that put freedom at the forefront of their design over the last decade alone.
Those three things are in my opinion the main reasons why I enjoyed the hell out of BotW. They’re the three pillars to it’s gameplay and they’re all weaved perfectly together, but much like a perfectly baked apple pie, being perfected doesn’t make it revolutionary. It just makes a fucking good apple pie.
Not to make any comparison between the two games (they're pretty different tbf) I found Horizon to be so boring traversal wise after playing BotW, shame they came out so close to each other haha
“After careful consideration, we decided to stop manufacturing the Xbox Kinect Adapter to focus attention on launching new, higher fan-requested gaming accessories across Xbox One and Windows 10,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement to Polygon. As for any plans to bring back the item in the future, the representative declined to discuss Microsoft’s product roadmap, but said the adapter “will no longer be available.”

I wish all of these open world games dedicated more to their in game cultures. Give me a reason to want to stick around these towns and possibly learn about whatever. More importantly, I want to have fun in them.
The side quests need redoing. Less find 3 rare acorns and more, "I was hustled out of my money in a game of spades. Send my grandmother to the shadow realm and you can have my family's sword."

Braccus Rex is a regular boss? Christ.
Haven't played them. I do have a WiiU, so I could make the jump there.
None of that is happening, until I beat Divinity 1 & 2 though. Not enough hours for these rpgs. 😔
