NFL 2017 Offseason thread of choking in a SuperBowl, Going to coach in SF and Getting Paid

I honestly feel horrible for RBH. I've been there so many times.
Scrutiny, like Kyle Shanahan admitting he blew it after the SuperBowl was over. But hey, he's the new coach of the San Francisco 49ers; not his problem anymore.

For the fifth time, the NFL season came to an end with Tom Brady clutching the Vince Lombardi Trophy as the New England Patriots enjoyed a confetti-infused Super Bowl celebration. In a thrilling game the city of Atlanta won’t soon forget, the Patriots came storming back from a 28-3 deficit to edge the Falcons 34-28 in overtime.
Aside from the mountain of broken records that were left shattered on the field at NRG Stadium in Houston, NFL fans will long remember this Super Bowl for the devastating collapse that led to Atlanta coughing up a 25-point lead. New England held a decisive upper hand in both plays run (93 to 46) and time of possession (40:31 to 23:27) as they marched back from a 28-3 hole at the 8:31 mark in the third quarter, but Atlanta’s play calling near the end of the fourth quarter ultimately led to their demise. The Falcons held a 28-20 lead with 4:40 remaining in regulation with the ball at the New England 23 yard line. A few simple run plays and a Matt Bryant boot through the uprights would have given Atlanta an 11-point lead with just minutes between them and a Super Bowl title. Instead, Atlanta ran one rushing play before absorbing a sack and a holding penalty, which led to a punt from near midfield. Tom Brady then marched the Patriots to a game-tying score before wrapping up his fifth title with a convincing overtime drive for a title winning touchdown.
As the Patriots steamrolled the Falcons in the fourth quarter and overtime, Tom Brady stacked up a healthy pile of passing yards as he peppered his receivers and running backs with targets. Brady finished the game with a Super Bowl record 466 passing yards and spread the ball around between his receiving options as six New England players saw six or more targets. With the Patriots running game rendered useless by the huge third quarter deficit, James White emerged from the New England backfield to lead the team with 14 catches on a massive total of 16 targets. White racked up 110 receiving yards and found the end zone once through the air and twice on the ground for a trio of scores. Brady’s performance was even more impressive considering the absence of Rob Gronkowski, but the Patriots used a balanced passing attack to force their way back into the game and ultimately claim the victory.
The Atlanta offense was effective throughout the game, but the limited play count compared to their opposition stunted the statistical upside of the Falcons’ skill players. NFL MVP Matt Ryan chucked the rock for 284 yards and two scores, but was left on the sideline for most of the critical moments of the game as Brady and the Patriots marched up and down the field. Rookie tight end Austin Hooper led the Falcons with six targets, catching three passes for 32 yards and a touchdown. Julio Jones caught all four of his targets for 87 yards, which included multiple world class catches that left viewers in awe. The Falcons would have likely preferred to feed the beastly Jones more than four targets, but New England paid plenty of attention to the All-Universe receiver throughout the game. Running back Devonta Freeman chipped-in with 121 total yards on 13 touches, including some chunk plays and a five-yard touchdown scamper. Perhaps if Freeman would have seen a few more carries in the waning moments of the game, the outcome would have been reversed. OC Kyle Shanahan will be under plenty of scrutiny in coming days over the late-game decisions made for his offense in the fourth quarter.

Literally the only good Atlanta news the past 3 days:
Falcons hired Steve Sarkisian as Offensive Coordinator.Legit much better than any other option, including Chip "Ego Freak" Kelly.
Jordan Schultz of The Huffington Post was first with the news, and Adam Schefter among others confirmed the report minutes later. Sarkisian took over for Lane Kiffin as Bama's offensive coordinator in the week before the National Championship loss, and it was assumed he would continue in that position in 2017. Most of Sark's experience comes at the college level including runs as the head coach at Washington and USC, but he did serve as the Raiders QB coach in 2004. It is both surprising Sarkisian decided to leave Alabama, and the Falcons are turning to a coach with no experience calling plays in the NFL. Sarkisian reportedly was looking to join the NFL ranks last January, however, and he and coach Dan Quinn reportedly know each other well and are both part of the Pete Carroll coaching tree. While the lack of experience in the NFL is a big concern, especially for a team with Super Bowl aspirations, Sarkisian is a quality offensive coach who will have plenty of talent to work with in Atlanta.
By DY_nasty Go To PostAt least I'm not a Niners fanIt's not that Atlanta sucks, it's Matt Ryan. But with new weapons, a good offensive line and an improving D his flaws were greatly marginalized... until Tom Quinn and former Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan moronically failed to coach situationally for 18 minutes, allowing Matt Ryan to become Matt Ryan once again. He is who I thought he was a month ago.
and thank god the world finally acknowledges that ATL aint shit
Think it is really funny that the exact same thing happened in the Seahawks / Pats Super Bowl (minus the choking) and Tom Quinn goes to Atl then they lose to the Pats and Kyle goes to SF..
Watching the 9ers be revitalized under worst Harbaugh and now imploding upon themselves in that new stadium 40 miles outside of the city they represent is pretty enjoyable.

Matt Ryan is a very good quarterback. He's just not a championship Quarterback. When the chips are down, and he HAS to make a play or else he comes up small. He's Romo with a stronger back.

Basically my brother put it this way: guys like Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, even Aaron Rodgers or Eli Manning won't take sacks like that to knock their team out of field goal range in the postseason. Or on 3rd and 1 they wouldn't call that pass play unless there was a massive tell the defense was giving. Hell, they'd audible out of the pass to run. Matt Ryan in two crucial spots showed he was the same QB he's always been, just has more weapons. Until he fixes himself upstairs coaching staff and run game gonna have to hold his hand at times.

Romo, coming up big?

for every time he's come up "big", there's 3 times or more where he didn't. Honestly I won't miss him.

By Enron Go To PostRomo, coming up big?As a Giants fan, I want to crack on him for all the times he's choked of failed. But I'd be lying if he didn't make a big play a few times in the playoffs. I feel like a healthy Romo with Ezekiel Elliot for one year goes deep into the playoffs. Dak misses too many receivers for my taste, I feel whatever team gets Romo is a playoff contender as long as they have a functioning O line and running game.

I hope the new Atlanta offensive staff remembers their dynamic run game next year, because it may be the last time the have it. Most teams don't have a dynamic 1-2 like Freeman and Coleman, and Freeman is a free agent next year.
By DY_nasty Go To PostMatty Melt isn't some new nickname. He been ain't shit before.A few years ago I had made a nice Photoshop based off an Outlaw Star episode called "When the Hot Matty Ice Melts". I can't find it for the life of me, but it would've been so appropriate after the SuperBowl. Dude looks unbeatable for awhile, then reverts to shit.
Jets voided the last year of Ryan Fitzpatrick's contract, making him a free agent.
Fitzpatrick technically signed a two-year deal last offseason, but language in the contract allowed the team to void the second year five days after the Super Bowl. Because his $10 million signing bonus was spread out over two years, voiding Fitzpatrick's deal will result in $5 million in dead money against the Jets' 2017 salary cap. The 34-year-old was one of the worst quarterbacks in football in 2016 but should be able to land a backup gig.
Shit QB with a big mouth who suckered the Jets into a contract he didn't deserve.
Giants released WR Victor Cruz.Man made an amazing comeback off a major knee injury, but he caught 39 passes last year. He's essentially a #3-#4 receiver at this point in his career, I hope he comes back at 2-3 million per. Giants save money that can go to getting Offensive line help, they arguably don't need to spend much for another receiver if Tavarres King/Roger Lewis Jr. can step up their game.
This was an easy move for GM Jerry Reese. Despite Cruz's pleas to remain with the team, it made no sense to bring him back at his $9.4 million cap number. With the move, the Giants save $7.5 million against the cap. After missing 26 straight games from 2014-2015, Cruz returned this seasons to nab 39 catches for 586 yards and one score. At 30 years old coming off numerous lower-body injuries, including a patellar tendon tear, Cruz simply isn't the same player anymore. Finding a capable No. 2 receiver opposite Odell Beckham should be a priority.
EDIT:
Giants released RB Rashad Jennings.Honestly, did not see that coming.
Jennings was set to make $2.48 million in the final season of his four-year contract. The move creates $2.5 million in cap space. Jennings was the Giants' best back for stretches of 2016, but ended up with a 3.27 YPC. Although a reasonably-effective veteran presence, Jennings served to muddle the Giants' backfield as much as strengthen it over the past two seasons. Ineffective committees were a staple of his time in the Big Apple. One month shy of his 32nd birthday, Jennings will have to hunt for No. 2/3 work in free agency, and won't land much, if any, guaranteed money.
Darrelle Revis is facing "pending" charges of aggravated assault, robbery, "conspiracy" and "making terroristic threats" following a weekend brawl in his native Pittsburgh. Darrelle Revis has been charged with four felonies for his role in a weekend fight in Pittsburgh. This is basura. So he took on 5 guys at once and knocked two out? This does not make sense to me, considering Revis is a very fan-friendly guy.
That includes two counts of aggravated assault. Revis is accused of knocking two men unconscious. It's a serious matter, likely not the kind that will disappear. It's also an ill-timed off-field issue for a 31-year-old corner coming off a lousy year. Revis is guaranteed $6 million for 2017, but this greatly increases the chances he gets cut loose, which would create $9.3 million in cap space for the Jets. Revis is alleged to have knocked two men unconscious. Per the police report, a man refused to stop filming Revis with his cellphone. The "robbery" charge would be because Revis (allegedly) took the phone and threw it in the street. This has the makings of a legal issue that could linger for most, if not all, of the offseason.
Bills resigning Tyrod Taylor to a much friendlier deal.

Romo released. I was hoping someone would step up with a 4th or something, but I guess not and Jerry wanted to let Romo choose his next destination.
Romo was never my choice as QB for my favorite team, and I am kind of glad he's gone since he always came up small in big moments but he was at least elite in the regular season and hope he can stay in one piece wherever he goes.

You know, it could be very possible that the Bills simply don't want to guarantee 30 million dollars to a guy they aren't sure will be a top 15 QB or not. Tyrod has done an OK job overall but the Bills with him under center have finished in the bottom 5 in passing offense both years. They are scoring because of their ground game.
Also, it could very well be that the Bills do want to keep him around, just not on the terms of the extension he signed. A reworked deal is also possible. They just don't want the possibility of him getting hurt (which would automatically activate the 30 mil in gurantees if he can't pass a physical in March)
Not everything is racist. If Bills ownership and the front office cared so much about having a white QB, then they wouldn't have 3 black QBs on the roster.

By blackace Go To PostYou can pretend that black QBs have been treated fairly in NFL… Or you can look at the history of how the black QB was treated and see how people might jump on that about Taylor fair or not…
We were specifically talking about Tyrod Taylor. Several posters cried racism without even stopping to think for 3 seconds. I said nothing about whether or not black QBs have been treated fairly by the NFL, just talked about Taylor's situation where he was gonna get paid 30 million for 1 freaking season. Bills were gonna do that regardless of the color of Taylor's skin.
And people looked at the history of the black QB as a whole.. It is easy to attempt to try to judge one action off of merit but for a lot of people who see and deal with the racism it is hard not to see history and think is it happening because of he is a black QB or not.. But you can brag on it like you know for a fact that his color of skin had nothing to do with it.. (not saying that it does , but I am sure not about to say that it doesn't)
Considering that the Bills renegotiated his deal instead of just kicking him to the curb, I guess that answers that question. That decision was to protect themselves from having to fork over a 30-million dollar payday to an injured player. Nothing more. Was absolutely the right move.
His skin had nothing to do with it lol
You're not paying that kind of money for one season and Tyrod was right to get grimey to secure his money.
This was always about money.

It is not that Taylor isn't worth that kind of money because from a football standpoint he isn't.. but it was the "hur hur remember when people thought that shitting on a black QB was racism hur hur" because it still happens a lot in NFL from coaching on down..
I mean yeah but lumping it all together doesn't do anything. Every year talking heads stir up shit because NFL is more soap opera than sport these days.
Cam was dealing with racist shit but he tap dances too much to get that racial division money.
Kaep was TOO good at it
Dak never had the drama with Romo that everyone wanted
Jameis has been a saint
Let's stir shit and make up something to give the talking heads some gas - pretend that this isn't about money. Poof. Cash. And why ESPN is also burning its own money.

Nothing wrong with just saying what it is, but no reason to take shots at people who felt differently at the time. Just rubbed me the wrong way..
So many deals that aren't official yet, I know someone's gonna pull a DeAndre.

this is a team that is trash, they should have learned their lesson by now about QB's
they need to build the rest of their team up to the point where any journeyman QB can get them to 8-8, once that happens they can start worrying about getting their QB of the future
they keep trying to get the QB before they have any kind of a foundation at all and they've wasted tons of resources doing that. 2nd rounders are valuable as shit, they should be terrified about acquiring a QB at this point for anything other than a 4th rounder or str8 cash via free agency
