We've had plenty of people contributing their thoughts (both minor and major), since this was a thing. A large portion of those come from when we cast our mental well being aside and run the, 31 Day Horror Movie challenge, in October. I'll work on pulling choice quotes and such, but for the time being, it's worth it to at least read through the 31 Day thread. A lot of movies were covered. I don't say that lightly. We all watched a lot of films (old and new).

I hope Syfy doesn't sit on Season 2 of Channel Zero until October. They finished shooting it back in November.

I guess that depends on how long post takes? Still, I need something in the interim. Season 1 was so good. :(
Did you see, "Before I Wake"? Technically, it's not out yet ( in NA ), but I know somebody that bought the BluRay off the strength of it being Mike Flanagan's film. It's pretty dope. Parents aren't shit in his films. lol

It was the last movie in my October Marathon. I really liked.
Bad news, Season 2 of Channel Zero is only coming in October.
But there's some good news, show has been renewed for a 3rd and 4th season.

Damn. October for Stranger Things 2 and this? :/ Did they pick what creepy pasta they're adapting for 3 and 4?
In A24 I trust.
No announcement regarding what they are doing for 3 and 4.
In the weirdest announcement of the year, John Carpenter announced a new Halloween directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express) and written by Danny McBride. Yes, that Danny McBride. Weird combination.

That is a very random pairing for this. lol. I am curious as to how they approach it though. I wasn't that big of a fan of Zombie's version, but it was an interesting take on the original.
Did you see Rings? Seems like it got slaughtered by the critics.

Stephen King saw Part 1 of the IT remake and he liked it.

I start to see things I recognize. It’s being very respectful of first two films. Then all of the sudden, it just swerves. And now I’m going on a journey. I feel like the franchise has been reinvigorated, like this is a renaissance.

Tim Curry's performance is probably why I'm cautious. Unfair nostalgia.

A large part of his script has to be in this movie. His name is second on the screenplay titles.

Hopefully we'll get alot of his other forms.
About to start a re-watch of the very underrated horror anthology series, Masters Of Horror.
I love the opening so much.
I love the opening so much.
I'll be writing some short impressions of my re-watch of Masters Of Horror as I feel the series doesn't receive the love it deserves and I am a sucker of horror anthologies. For those who don't know it, Masters Of Horror was an horror anthology series created by Mick Garris for Showtime. Multiple horror masters were given a small budget to make a short movie and there was only two restrictions : no adults committing violent acts to children (the reverse was allowed) and no full frontal male nudity.
Season 1 started with a bang. Based on a short story by Joe R. Lansdale, Incident On And Off A Mountain Road was adapted and directed by the great Don Coscarelli (Phatasm franchise, Bubba Ho-Tep and John Dies At The End).
A young woman is involved in a car crash in a road mountain but the real terror was yet to start.
The story continuously switches back between her terrible encounter in the mountain and her relationship with a man called Bruce. It's a interesting mixture of two types of horror, one more fictional and another more real. Bree Turner does a good job as Ellen, a woman desperately trying to survive a deadly encounter with a mysterious man / entity called Moonface.
The back and forward between the two timelines really gives a fresh feel to this story and turns it into something a bit more than a slasher tale.
The great late Angus Scrimm (Phantasm's Tall Man) also makes an appearance with a wonderfully bizarre character.
There's plenty of gore, even if the truly horrifying scene happens off screen, and the short length helps the movie keep at a good pace.
It is one of my favorite movies of this anthology and it was a great way to kick off the show.
I also discovered this song thanks to this.

Second short movie of the anthology is an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's Dreams In The Witch House by Stuart Gordon, who did movie adaptations of other Lovecraft tales like Re-Animator, From Beyond and Dagon.
The story is set on modern times and it follows a physics student who rents a room in an old house from the awful Mr. Dombrowski to work on his thesis about the string theory. Also living in the house are a reclusive and strange old man and a young woman named Frances, who has a baby.
Walter (the student) quickly connects with Frances and helps her around while trying to work on his thesis. But soon, strange dreams and occurrences make Walter question everything and fear that something deadly might occur...
Stuart Gordon knows Lovecraft well and clearly enjoys his work but Dreams In The Witch House is considered one of Lovecraft's worst and for good reason. It still has some interesting ideas about witchcraft but not nearly as iconic and creative as the rest of Lovecraft's work.
The actors are decent (Chelah Horsdal is lovely) and there's a scene that it's quite disgusting that I quite like.
Still worth a watch even though the low budget seems a bit more evident here than in another of the series anthologies.
I watched a few episodes of Masters of Horror a long time ago, specifically Cigarette Burns (John Carpenter!!!) which was recommended to me by someone. Maybe I should watch all the episodes.
V/H/S/2 also has a few nice episodes by good directors, I remember Adam Wingard's episode of a guy with an eye implant who starts seeing ghosts and another by Gareth Evans of a documentary crew stumbling upon a demon worshipping cult.

Cigarette Burns is easily the best thing Carpenter made since In The Mouth Of Madness and it makes for a good double feature with that.
VHS 2 was pretty solid, shame the third one was awful.
Edit: The IT trailer has broken the record of most watched trailer online in the first 24h with 197M views. Fate Of The Furious had the previous record with 139M.

Directed by Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergueist's Tobe Hopper and based on a story from Richard Matheson (Duel, Stir of Echoes, I Am Legend and countless other horror and sci-fi tales), Dance Of The Dead takes us to an America that has been hit hard by terrorist biological attacks.
The "blizz" is a weapon that falls from the sky and burns off the skin of everyone who touches it.
It's been 10 years since the attack and Peggy works with her mother at a dinner. Drug addict Jak enters the dinner one day with his friend Boxx and is instantly attracted by Peggy, who is also intrigued by him.
This encounter will forever change her and will force her to see some hidden truths in the Doom Room.
The Doom Room is an heavy metal bar who has a charismatic MC (played by the always terrific Robert Englund) and is home to a particular type of show...
This is alright. I am always up to see Robert Englund having fun with a role and he seems like he does that in this. His MC is crazy and full of charisma, controlling all the attention of the room with his antics.
The short movie strays a bit of the usual zombie movies by having the humans control the zombies and use them for their pleasure. There is a strange scene where Robert Englund seems to be getting a blowjob from a female zombie. Crazy times at the Doom Room.
A curious piece of trivia, the score of the movie was composed by the Smashing Pumpkins and all around crazy person, Billy Corgan.
Now, this is a weird one. Directed by one of my favorite horror directors, the Italian Master Dario Argento, it's based on 10 page black and white comic from the 70's and it was written by and starred Steve Weber (who did tons of things including The Shinning mini-serie, who was also directed by the creator of Masters Of Horror, Mick Garris).
Frank is a detective eating launch on his squad car by the river when he suddenly notices a man with a meat cleaver dragging a young woman.
He runs after them and tries to stop the man from killing the woman. The man yells that Frank doesn't know what she is capable of and Frank ends up shooting him. He then goes up to console the woman when shockingly discovers that she has a very deformed face.
She doesn't speak and seem to have some king of mental defect so they take her to an asylum but Frank can't take her off his head so he takes her home.
Frank's wive doesn't like that Frank has brought home this strange woman with a very attractive body who has the tendency to get naked and ends up leaving him for a while.
Frank can't seem to escape Jenifer's spell and his life becomes more weird, sexual and twisted...
This is Confused Boner : The Short Movie. Dario Argento plays around with the viewer by mixing eroticism and repulsion into the sex scenes.
Would you fuck a woman with a smoking body but the face of a demon?
Jenifer isn't great, I would even struggle to call it decent but it is just a bizarre movie that it's worth a look.
Written and directed by the show's creator, Mick Garris (The Shinning and The Stand mini-serires), Chocolate is a story of a divorced lab technician
who one day starts to hear, see, feel and taste what an unknown person is hearing, seeing, feeling and tasting. Jamie starts to become obsessed by this person and when this sudden attacks start to affect his life, he will try everything to find who and where is that person.
Chocolate isn't one of the best received short movies of this anthology but this type of tales is what I like about the format, strange and original stories that probably wouldn't work with a bigger budget or runtime but can function as a short story.
The guy playing Jamie seemed so familiar to me and it took me a while to remember where I've seen this Henry Thomas. Well, Henry Thomas is none other than Elliot from E.T. all grown up. This was a neat surprise, as was seeing Matt Frewer who is probably more well known for stuff like Max Headroom and Dawn Of The Dead but I will always remember him for his role on The X-Files rip-off from Canada named Psi Factor.
This a decent little tale with some interesting moments.

Man...I'm soooo conflicted on "The Void". On one hand, it feels like they ran out of time when it came to character arcs for a couple of the cast members (especially with the "intern"). For example, her moment happens off screen, after they give her a big scene leading up to it. It also feels like it dove into the action way to quickly. You don't get to know the cast well enough. That leads to connections between certain characters feeling lacking. In particular, the primary antagonist and the relationship to the protagonist, suffers from it (a lot). The movie gets into a habit of telling you why to feel a certain way, without really showing it (when it's not glossing over aspects for time).
I'm sure there is a technical reason for this (or a choice that was made), but I'm curious as to why they didn't let some of the creature designs rock in the light. For the most part, the monsters are clad in darkness, high contrast lights, or partially obscured. When you compare it with a film like, "The Thing", it's kind of bewildering. I'm not even the type to beg for gore (I honestly don't think it's always necessary), but here...outside of a certain locale, my mind was left to fill in the gaps, where it shouldn't have.
Ultimately, it felt caught in a weird love triangle between Lovecraft, Fulci, and Carpenter. In my eyes, Carpenter already gave the blueprint for this type of action and horror, with "The Thing" and "Assault on Precinct 13" (kind of unfair to say). It misses what made "The Beyond" and the two Carpenter films work so well. The use of mystery and psychology to fuck with the audience is...not really present.
On the other hand, I was thoroughly entertained. It works as a cosmic horror edition of "Assault on Precinct 13". The low budget shows, but they did a lot working around it. Some of the scenes in this film...man. Left me with the egad, wtf, stuck face. I don't even like "Event Horizon", but "The Void" has a couple of spots that drew out the same reactions I had seeing the ship's hellscape interior (though, The Void does not go anywhere near as far as those scenes). The creature design is crazy and the film itself is stylish (in regards to set design...the camera work is typical). This lot is talented. I really want to see what they can do with a bigger budget.
It's not the best horror flick I've seen this year, nor is it better than the 70's and 80's films that it clearly draws influence from. However, it is definitely worth checking out.
Yeah sorry I posted about The Void in the 2016 thread.
Generally agree with you though. I still feel like horror movies haven't yet had their one defining mind-blowing cosmic horror/Cthulu movie. I look forward to the day they do.

Just went back and read your impressions! I'm not the most well versed in the Cthulu mythos (Lovecraft in general, tho I understand the basic premise/rules), but it seems like the last two films that I saw that tackled cosmic terror (Baskin and The Void), nailed style, but fell short of the other aspects.
I started to say that the Mist was the closest I've seen to Lovecraftian horror, but even that misses the mark in so many ways.
Perhaps the style is just really hard to express in movie format? When I think of most of the stories, they would make for a really dull movie. Some might make a good TV episode. Twilight Zone captures the theme.
Playing on that theme of a thinly veiled sense of terror which becomes immediate and real, beyond which an even greater horror of hopelessness and dread, is so hard to capture, but The Mist did that pretty well.

I expected it to be bad but never this bad. It feels like a low budget direct to DVD sequel. It has some decent ideas but it never does much with them. For example, Gabriel studying the curse and having his students as guinea pigs in a sort of a secret club, it's original and it could be pushed it an interesting direction but instead goes into the cliche territory of investigating the backstory of Samara.
The characters are stupid and that movie doesn't really give you any reason to care about them. Even the backstory of Samara is poorly explained.
It's low on scares and even lower in good storyline. The only things that kept me entertained were Vincent D'Onofrio's hammy performance and this ridiculous scene that made me burst out laughing at 2 in the morning.
I kind want a sequel just to see how to they carry on after that ridiculous ending but that looks very unlike to ever come out as it did 83M$ WW on a 25M$ budget but only 27M$ in the USA.
By Freewheelin Go To PostIs that Leonard from Big Bang Theory, lolIt is. He was decent in it but severely underused, the movie would have been better if they had explored more of his story arc.
