I want to believe budapest will clean up. But i know it won't. Which is terrible.
And gone girl. Cause... that was just a great movie.
And gone girl. Cause... that was just a great movie.
Older I've got, less I've cared about the Oscars; that anonymous ballot thing that's been making its way around shows just how much politics really goes into it.
Would love a GBH or Whiplash win, but Boyhood was fantastic too, and at least Birdman - if it does win - isn't as poor as a few other recent winners.
Would be a travesty if Iñárritu won over Linklater for me, to be honest.

The biggest travesty for me personally will be when Ida wins foreign. Also obviously rooting for Saint Deakins.
Ida was great. Haven't seen the others though so I can't really say much about any possible winner at this point. And I agree with Nathan, can't be arsed by the Oscars. Would be nice to see some great people like Wes Anderson win awards because they obviously like it. But other than that it's mostly the wrong film/person that wins.
By the way, would Sl&ent; be up for a Movie of the Year thread you guys figure? I think that could be fun.

Movie of the Year would be great. Gonna start early on my Ida hate campaign :
By LiniusI'll toss up a thread for MOTY stuff. And I'd like to hear why you dislike Ida so much :P
For such a short running time, I just felt that the movie was incredible empty. The movie felt very reminscint of a Dreyer/Bergman picture, without the weight, which is surprising giving the subject matter. It would be better served as a short, but I know that I am in the minority here. It was very pretty though and the lead was very good!
I hope Best Picture is won by either Whiplash or The Grand Budapest Hotel. The only award i would give Gimmickhood is best director, and for the wrong reasons (working 12 years on a movie).
here's my final ratings for best picture:
Birdman 9.5/10
Whiplash 9/10
Boyhood 8.5/10
The Imitation Game 8.5/10
Grand Budapest Hotel 8/10
Theory of Everything 7/10
Selma 6/10
'Murican Sniper 1/10
Birdman 9.5/10
Whiplash 9/10
Boyhood 8.5/10
The Imitation Game 8.5/10
Grand Budapest Hotel 8/10
Theory of Everything 7/10
Selma 6/10
'Murican Sniper 1/10
Boyhood or Birdman for best pic IMO.
Would love GBH to win but it has a very small chance :(
Also think Redmayne might win Best Actor due to all the media hype, but I havent seen that film yet. Would love Keaton to win. Best Director is between Linklater and Iñárritu, was sad the director of Whiplash didn't get nominated :(

Yeah Elswit did. Love him and the cinematography for TWBB, but as you said, Jesse James was immaculate visually (and sonically). Deakins even had In the Valley of Elah that year...What a man.
By ApolloHorrible thread title. Winning for your worst work in years? Lmao
Scorsese won for The Departed. It happens and should happen from time to time.

Departed was the best nomination that year. That isn't the same as being nominated for Unbroken. A film that's basically a big budget Lifetime movie.
By nathanThe Departed > Infernal Affairs. Come at me m8sI like both, but accurate.
I really didn't have any problem with The Departed winning that year. It's a great film.
I only care about the Oscars because I like seeing the breakdowns online. Although, The Grand Budapest Hotel upsetting everyone tonight would go down in history.
By FootballFanGive every award to Grand Budapest Hotelam i the only one not choking up a big fat one for grand budapest?
i mean its a good movie, even better acting and script,
but the whole using 4:3 aspect ratio bugged the shit out of me.

How so? It never takes the viewer out of the story since everything is framed to its respective ratio. And it does further the story and informs the viewer as to which time the characters are in.

from my own experience and my own network of filmmakers, it didn't do anything but become a nuisance

You're the only person I know that feels like this.
If Iñárritu wins best director that's going to be two in a row for Mexican directors.

Doesn't deserve it. Cuaron pushed new tech and this and that; Iñárritu is just doing Russian Ark ten years late. Linklater pls

I don't even like Birdman. Just going for Iñárritu for best director because than I get to see racist breakdowns on twitter.
EDIT: I can't get over how it has been sunny for the last five days and it starts raining today of all days.

I enjoyed Birdman, but didn't love it. Whiplash >
It's been raining here. I also have a hole in my sock. If I catch pneumonia and die you can have my firstborn (provided I get someone pregnant before I die)
By nathanBy ApolloI won't watch Whiplash.
