Did not like it.
Feel asleep 3 times.
Deaths were meh.
Action was boring.
Acting was poor.
Film was not necessary if you ask me.

It's just a holdover from all the time he's fallen asleep watching James Harden shoot freethrows. Can't blame the guy.
It was pretty good. Okay at worst. End up only really caring about two characters, and yet those two aren't the leads. Could have cut out a lot of the rebel alliance scenes, a couple Empire scenes, and replaced them with character development.
Film seemed concerned with trying to make a fictional war meant as metaphor into a more complex moral scenario as though it was a real war, and then after doing all that work, suddenly dropped that complexity about halfway through.

I really liked it. Walked out of the cinema with a nerd grin on my face.
Darth Vader was sublime. Donnie Yen was the new character I liked the most. I don't even remember the name of the Diego Luna's character to be honest, couldn't they just give him a hispanic short name or something?
Jones was a huge disappointment. Maybe is just me but I felt like she wasn't that into the film.
Leia was full CGI?

By KingGondo Go To PostLeia was CGI, and so was Tarkin.he was? wow.
By Elchele Go To Posthe was? wow.Seriously!? I thought that was super obvious.
By reilo Go To PostSeriously!? I thought that was super obvious.Obvious and I'd go so far as to say it's jarring and offputting. It's probably my least favorite part of the whole film.
By rodeoclown Go To PostObvious and I'd go so far as to say it's jarring and offputting. It's probably my least favorite part of the whole film.Yea I agree. The actor that two seconds of a younger Tarkin in the prequels was certainly available and should've just rolled with that. That was pure "yea we can do the CG" ego.
Yeah. Too much uncanny valley with Tarkin. At least the last Tron movie had a built in excuse for CG Jeff Bridges.
By reilo Go To PostSeriously!? I thought that was super obvious.dunno. it looked weird because I know the actor was dead, but aside from that I thought it was some new actor with a lot of makeup proccess on. Maybe on IMAX you can notice it, but on a normal cinema room it wasn't that noticeable.
I didn't watch it in IMAX and thought it was obvious *shrug*
The character looked like he was floating.
The character looked like he was floating.
Did you watch in 3D? I think that helps a lot since the worst part about Tarkin was how his face was lit. 3D glasses darkening the image mitigates some of that
I'll take uncanny valley over a bad recast any day. I'm not a fan of Han being replaced for his solo film
Don't know. Tarkin was a good call, IMO. This just a prequel to the original trilogy, Tarkin isn't a main character so the decision was right. Rather than have a shitty recast. Consistency to A New Hope was very important.
On the Han Solo topoc, it would be impossible and weird to have this kind of option. A recast is necessary.

don't think a recast is a bad idea but has anyone looked less like their predecessor than alden ehrenreich? it's going to be distracting as fuck--same with danny glover. I'm afraid its going to feel like one of those bad SNL skits except with a 200 million dollar budget.
in other news my girlfriend has never seen a SW film and saw Rogue One first. I recently had her watch a new hope. She said she doesn't know if she'd have liked ANH as much without Rogue One because she felt it described "the struggle" more and gave more weight to events in ANH. I don't really like messing around with watch chronology but I would firmly recommend Rogue One as the first SW film anyone watches.

Didn't it detract from ANH though ? Hearing Obi Wan explain the force for the first time, seeing Vader burst through the door in the beginning. Even showcasing the power of a lightsaber for the first time. All ruined.

Nearly all of this is better introduced in RO.
Vaders RO introduction is better than his ANH intro. He literally appears from a castle on a lava world in RO. In ANH he just walks through that corridor screaming and threatening and is a little awkward.
The power of a lightsaber is better introduced in RO as well because if you never knew anything about Star Wars and you saw Vader walk through that corridor and a bunch of rebels about to open fire, you'd be like lol vader is about to get rekt, and then you see him just swatting away the blaster shots like its nothing and you're like wtf is that weapon and oh god this is that force shit.
The force explanations in ANH aren't ruined. RO speculates, and shows but doesn't tell, ANH provides more detailed explanations and expands what is possible.
