Rogue One: A Star Wars Story 「We Made It, Asians aren't Extinct in Star Wars」...now with spoilers
Comes out in 3 days.
Apparently it's supposed to be really good. Like best film yet good.
I'm not a really huge fan of the franchise but I enjoy space opera science fiction shit so I'll probably enjoy this.
Mostly here for Mads Mikkelsen and Donnie Yen.
anyone know if they used 3d models for the X-wings/tie fighters/star destroyer, or did they use miniatures?
that would be rad.
that would be rad.

Only session tomorrow is at the same time that Sporting's cup so my plan to see it on opening day is ruined. Definitely going this weekend.
Rogue One is a movie crammed with fan service, but when fan service is done this well, there’s little to complain about and much to adore. The film offers a remarkable recreation of the original Star Wars’ world, while exploring this universe from a different, edgier perspective than is the norm. It also expertly delivers thrills, tension and genuine stakes, despite the audience's prior knowledge that the movie’s central mission will be a successful one. Gareth Edwards has shown, with the first “Star Wars Story,” that these spinoffs can have plenty of life in them, adding even more excitement to Star Wars’ huge modern resurgence.IGN 9.0
“Rogue One,” more fluently than any other “Star Wars” story, speaks to the idea that resistance is a team effort, and that every act of heroism is made possible by the sacrifices of a thousand others — that every hero is made possible by a thousand people whose names have been long forgotten. This is a film about how even the smallest acts of courage can change the world, a film about doing the right thing even when it’s easier to just stare at your feet and stay in formation. Not only is “Rogue One” the rare modern blockbuster that could have afforded to risk something real, it’s the rare modern blockbuster that gave itself a genuine responsibility to do so. And yet, for all of its excitement and occasional splendor, there’s nothing the least bit rebellious about it. It could have been special, instead it’s just… forced.Indiewire - C+
Granted, the film doesn’t fire on all cylinders. In addition to its plotting and character issues, there are a few too many winks to the original films as if executives were terrified that if fans would lose interest if there weren’t enough callbacks. Additionally, while Michael Giacchino is a talented composer, there’s no hiding that he had limited time to work on his score, which functions more as a variation of familiar John Williams’ themes rather than something new and exciting. Also, as I mentioned before, trying to go with a digital Tarkin rather than just casting a new actor was an expensive miscalculation, and Cushing’s presence is more of a distraction than a welcome sight.Collider - B
But these issues aside, what Rogue One accomplishes on a larger scale is incredibly encouraging for Star Wars going forward. While there is some element of safety with the next spinoff featuring a fan favorite character like Han Solo, Rogue One has forged a new path by showing that you can make a good Star Wars movie even if it has a different tone and approaches the universe from a new perspective. Not everything has to be Skywalkers and lightsabers. While I’m excited for Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII, I’m far more encouraged about where new “Star Wars Stories” can take us. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may not be a total success, but it accomplishes its most important mission.
It is the first Star Wars movie I’ve ever seen where I genuinely felt as if I didn’t know how it was going to end — even though, more than any other, its ending is obvious and established. The Rebels succeed in liberating the Death Star plans. The space station is destroyed in a daring offensive. Some years later, the Rebellion is won.Polygon - no rating
I spent the third act of the film rigid in my seat, and the very last of it with my hand over my gaping mouth. I can’t wait to watch the same thing happen to everyone else I know.
Rogue One, freed from the shackles of an episode number, doesn’t even try to evoke that same level of verisimilitude. And while it might be bumpy for some moviegoers, that actually seems to be the point. The film soars when it abandons all pretense of being a space opera, and fully embraces the bombastic modern action movie that’s at its core, giving it a unique identity that does indeed stand apart from other entries in the series. Given that, it’s hard to shake the feeling that Rogue One takes place in a Star Wars world, but isn’t necessarily a Star Wars movie. The Verge - no rating
I want to see Riz Ahmed on the big screen in a blockbuster movie. I'll watch him here.
Anything and everything else about it can be spoiled for me.

hopefully I wont feel the same as that Indiewire review.
I want a fresh new take on the Star Wars Universe and without any homage to the originals
and still be in the same spirit.

By Kabro Go To Posthopefully I wont feel the same as that Indiewire review.Pretty sure a back story to the first Star Wars movie ever isn't trying to reinvent the way Star Wars is looked at

That's a tough expectation for a prequel that has a set outcome which we all know. Episode 8 will be the one to potentially set a new tone.
I think the best comparison is Crisis Core to Final Fantasy VII for this where we know what it leads into, but the build up to it and how they accomplish the ending/beginning leading up to Star Wars 4?
The only thing you could maybe hope for is a gritty look at the war effort...
Now the Han Solo movie...

By blackace Go To PostThe only thing you could maybe hope for is a gritty look at the war effort…VERY curious how they'll handle Han. He's hinted at being a scumbag prior to the events in episode IV. The reluctant hero and all that.

By Jay Whatever Go To PostSomeone offered me a ticket to see this Thursday evening. Tell me if I should go or not.
You seem to like all the Marvel movies so Star Wars might be a little too highbrow for you.

It's the premier in the US right? That oughta be fun!

Watched it a few hours ago. Theres some bad VFX but loved it. Dark, gritty, and slotted in perfect before the old trilogy timeline.
For me it's now ESB > Rogue One > TFA

Haven't followed the production and not a Star Wars fan in general, so I was just wondering if you guys think it'll be good. The show I was invited to is in Queens though and I don't feel like traveling that far by train, but a free movie is a free movie.
By blackace Go To PostI didn't know Gary Whitta wrote this…I remember him going back through all his old posts on NeoGAF and deleting a bunch of Star Wars slander in his posts when he got the gig. That was kind of amusing.

going into this one with an open mind, though I loved TFA

front like you wouldn't do the same thing though
its a good thing I got away from thoughts about getting into the industry--if I somehow did well there I'd have so many disrespectful posts about various devs lol
Naw, I'd own that shit. If you're a writer that cares about a medium even as from a fan perspective, it's good to come in with a healthy dose of criticism. Works like this won't improve if we just pretend that everything was fine about the past work. We adore and have genuine love for this franchise, but we don't get a quality rung of these new movies if we don't have acknowledge it's shortcomings. Bet JJ Abrams wasn't pretending like it was an infallible franchise in his pitch meetings. Own your shit.
Of course it's a good film. No way in fucking hell is it average or below average. The only question is how good of a film you think it is.
By Kabro Go To PostTFA is a good film?I far prefer good and "safe" over whatever the prequels were.
It's decent but I always thought Abrams played it way too safe.
as a Star Wars film, its pretty good.
but as a film unto itself?
its pretty forgettable.
Though I'd rather watch TFA over and over again than any Marvel movies recently sans the first Avengers.
come at me.
anyways, hopefully I'll have time to see it this weekend.
I wasn't too hyped about a JJ Abrams star wars, and i'm more excited about this then TFA.
Rian Johnson though, with ep. 8?
gonna be ham.

Good film. First 30 mins were a bit disjointed, but after they got to Jedha it settled. Last 45 mins or so is great.
Plus Vader is sensational.
Plus Vader is sensational.
Longer impressions later but I thought the last 40 minutes were amazing.Perfect mixture of hopefulness and tragedy. Vader was such a beast and the fanboy in me was so damn excited to see the movie end just at the start of A New Hope.
Movie was fantastic. I'm leaning towards better than Episode VII. Last half the entire theater was completely quiet on the edge of their seats..never seen anything like that before. Look forward to seeing it again soon.
By Forever Go To PostIs it worth seeing for someone who thought 7 was very mediocre?Depends, it's very different from 7. More dark, not as epic.
By LFMartins86 Go To PostDepends, it's very different from 7. More dark, not as epic.I'll give it a shot then. Bought my ticket. I'll be back to complain if it sucks.
By n8 dogg Go To PostDefinitely didn't like it as much as 7. Was missing the energy and the stand out characters.Agreed about the lack of stand out characters. They were all competent enough, however Cassian did next to nothing for me. It felt like the movie could've benefited greatly from a more thoroughly developed relationship between him and Jyn. Dunno, maybe it was just the actor.
By DY_nasty Go To PostIt was good. Maybe even a great movie… but its definitely missing something.Haven't watched it yet but all the trailers lacked personality
By p s y Go To PostHaven't watched it yet but all the trailers lacked personalityWhen Donnie Yen is one of the standout guys, there's an issue.
Its weird, but as soon as the credits rolled - my only thought was "I can't wait to see the director's cut". That should never happen.
Edit: Also, Vader will fuck your shit all the way up. Not later, but right now. Right fucking now.
Put some respect on his name now that he is selling out to Hollywood too.
I really enjoyed the movie. The beginning half should have been paced better to flesh things out more but it really come together as a film and worked well in the last portion when they actually start their mission.
They also make Dat Vader stronger and more brutal than he was portrayed in other film.
I really enjoyed the dogfights, the best ones to me.
