For lunch, I'd grab a muffuletta at the Central Grocery. Also greatly enjoyed the roast beef po boys and fried bell pepper rings at Franky and Johnny's: http://www.frankyandjohnnys.com/

Going there next Thurs-Sun for a bachelor party (Mardis Gras and all) and it is my first time. Most of the itinerary is filled up, but was curious if there was some lunch places I have to hit or maybe something I need to see that most people don't know about.

We will be doing the obvious stuff like beignets, swamp tour, martini tour, jazz club, strip club (i assume) and we're eating one night at Commander's Palace. But I'm a big fan of getting the best local stuff, like say a Po Boy or whatnot and thought maybe Slaentbros knew things. So anything you wanna let me know, let me hear it!

Thanks. Upperline looks good but it seems our main dinners are taken care of. Definitely going for seafood po boys over roast beef, though. We have great sushi in SoCal, but I've always felt our "normal" seafood to be lacking so I'm getting as much as I can out there!

You'll probably have multiple opportunities to get seafood po boys (and I understand the sentiment) but the roast beef ones were recommended by a native to me and they lived up to the billing. Won't hurt my feelings if you decide not to try them. :) The pepper rings are to die for though.

Oh yeah, also forgot--check out the bar at the Hotel Monteleone. It's decorated like a carousel and even rotates (verrrrrry slowly). Lots of excellent cocktails and the bartenders can chat up a storm.

And if you MUST check out Bourbon Street, walk down it and never go there again. It's honestly pretty gross and full of rip-offs. The rest of the French Quarter is cool though. Probably the best city I've ever been in for just walking around and being entertained. Lots of cool antique shops, art shops, street musicians, and tons of great people-watching.

NOLA isn't for everyone, but if it clicks you'll keep coming back.

I may just have to at least try the roast beef, then. Taking note on that hotel. As far as I understand, we're sort of freewheeling our Fri/Sat night entertainment so these types of suggestions are great. Granted, it being mardis gras, we'll probably be outside most of the time (though I will find my way into a jazz club).

We'll definitely be on Bourbon Street at some point. It's funny, I'm at a time in my life where I don't really care about Mardis Gras at all. 10 years ago, I'd be ecstatic about the prospects of stupid drunk girls, tits, and the like. These days I'm excited most for the food, culture, and music (big jazz fan). Not that I won't have fun also being drunk with my friends (we haven't all been in the same place for 3 years now, so there's that too) because I will but priorities change as you age and shit.

New Orleans has been my #1 city to see for a long time now. I already know I'm gonna love it. Only issue is my girl is irritated she doesn't get to go, lol...then again that means we'll have to go back soon!

i'm jelly, always wanted to go there but never found a good enough reasons over other US cities.

If you go there, check out a bed and breakfast or two. I didn't think breakfast could get fancy, but the hosts can really throw down. Besides, they are much nicer than the hotels.

There's a large casino in town if you're into gaming. A Penthouse store if you're kinky. Bands are everywhere, but you'll have to travel a bit out of the French Quarter outside of the attractions like Café du Monde (please do go there) to find the really skilled people musicians who laugh at competing with guys on the streets.

It's one thing seeing a well-endowed woman in photos on the internet. Seeing them walking in the streets near the burlesque houses on Bourbon Street was...startling.

It's a very cool place. Lots of iconic American writers used to stay at the Monteleone, including Truman Capote.

Make sure to get a Vieux Carre cocktail. :)

Never been to CP? You must. Their Fois Gras is the best I've had to date. Their bread pudding souffle out of this world. turtle soup (my first foray) was awesome. Entire meal was something else.

I can't believe I got that 3 course meal with shared app, wine, and a cocktail there for less than $100 after tax/tip. That restaurant in LA is $150-200 easily. Possibly more.

The quality is just off the charts and they are not some skimpy bullshit place. I was stuffed afterwards.

All the food out there was so good. I already miss it. Also, beer in the bars are so cheap compared to here, lol. Though, their beer situation is sub-par but that's fine. No one gives a shit when the object is to get drunk.

Yes. We went to the bar at Hotel Monteleone which was cool and had a drink. I had a muffalleta at central grocery, which was quite good (though the 3rd best sandwich I had). Had a crawfish Poboy from somewhere in the French quarter which was awesome.

We ate at a cafe for breakfast/lunch 3 times next to our place. Uh...we woke up at like 11am every day after going to bed around 6am so yeah...it's why we didn't bother going anywhere else. That cafe was really really good. Buscuits and gravy best I've had. cupcakes awesome. corned beef has, oh god. Croissants too good.

Went to cafe du monde every night at 3am, haha. Oh god, I could 100 of those things.

We did go on Bourbon one night...and the Penthouse club. it was a bachelor's party, after all. Frenchman Street the other 2 nights, which i absolutely loved. Didn't get a chance to see a full jazz show, though.

I'd like to return but this time with my girl. Maybe in a year or so.

BTW forgot to mention. Holy shit it is a different world out there. Literally 5 min into my cab ride out of the airport the driver dropped the n word (he's white).

When I went the first time I stayed in a hostel in Treme and it was really something.

Coming from a childhood growing up in suburbia and small-town Oklahoma, the only black communities I'd experienced were extremely impoverished and sad. Treme was a whole different world. Still fairly poor, but colorful, prideful, and beautiful.

People invited us into their homes for meals and treated us like family. It was an awesome experience.
