Due to Furyous' interest in making a Manga thread, let's keep this one strictly to discussing American Action Funnyhahas (comics)
Let me be the first to say that Bleach is looking like the worst of the WCW right now.

Still waiting on Inoue to finish Vagabond and REAL.

As far as recommendations go, everybody should read Pluto by Naoki Urasawa. Went the farthest of Urasawa's series before kingdom hearting itself.
And basketball fans should read SLAM DUNK and REAL by Takehiko Inoue. Great manga. REAL in particular has great art and its gets better as it goes on.
Vagabond is also a great manga(also by Inoue) about a wandering samurai where the artwork levels up to 99 later in the manga.
Some examples of Inoue's artwork:

As per the OP, I'm reading Sandman right now and it's
soooooogood.gif.
Gaiman may very well have the most compelling narrative control that I have ever witnessed in illustrated narrative. Every single character written has place and purpose.
I am in book 3(?) after Lucifer has closed hell once he discovers that Dream is looking to rectify a "mistake" me made by damning someone who turned him down for all eternity, and all sorts of mythical beings have shown up in Dream's domain looking for its keys..
I know that Death is intentionally drawn to be beautiful, but I can't help but to fall for it anyway. When I was a kid, I had a huge crush on Lydia from Beetlejuice and Lisa Bonet's character on the Cosby Show (even though I never watched a single episode in its entirety). Death is practically a blend of the two.
Even though I love Sandman, I am reading it slowly...like, one "chapter" a week or so, just to absorb it. Digital comics have spoiled me...I flew through Y: The Last Man Book 1, All Star Superman, and the first two volumes of Kick-Ass, but Sandman has taught me to try to catch everything not just read for "coverage."

I'm bulldozing through this enormous Marvel backlog because I need to find out what happens in Avengers #40. I spent the last year catching up on the last five years worth of events while still reading a handful of current solo runs - Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye, She-Hulk, Superior Spider-Man. Almost all caught up.
By psychintellectStill waiting on Inoue to finish Vagabond and REAL.I should probably get into Vagabond.

edit - Reading order for Night of Owls - https://comicsandgadgets.wordpress.com/2013/08/01/batman-night-of-the-owls-reading-order/

Just read the Batman books.

You could just read the Avengers since #1.
Oh and since its marvel. heroes probably started fighting each other again and something is making some of them act strange.
Prepare for a lot of talking and Cap sitting around.
Vagabond is out of hiatus....not getting my hopes up. This and REAL are like the HxH of seinin manga.
I'd read Vagabond but I don't want to invest time into it until I hear how its ending begins to form.
After Slam Dunk I don't trust Inoue to give his series a proper ending. I just expect him to get bored and rush onto something else

Then read Avengers, NA, and Avengers world more of less side by side numerically up to avengers 40
If thats not enough you can then go back and read Hickman's S.H.E.I.L.D. Then his Fantastic Four, FF run, Then his Ulitimate FF run and you will know about as much as anyone else does.
X-Force 15 released and put a end to a pretty good X-Force run. I love Hope finally putting Cable in his place and running the show near the end. Hope, Psylocke, Domino, Nemesis, Marrow seems to be a DM good team to spectate.
starting Uncanny X-Men today hopefully.

Finally on board with Dr. Doom being the GOAT. lol. I just need an explanation for how and why (regarding his most recent actions).

Anyway, Pluto is pretty good.
I'll recommend that as well, including everything else from Urasawa.
Billy Bat is also great, despite not knowing where exactly everything is leading as the series is still ongoing, I know he will connect all dots later on.
Alot of historical figures appear in the manga, like Hitler,Einstein,Kennedy and many more.
It's pretty hard to give a proper description...
Another suggestion of mine would be "Homunculus" from Hideo Yamamoto (most famous for Ichi the Killer).
Really great piece and I love his style.
It's Seinen material and got tackles some pretty hard topics, but without drifting too far away.
Easily one of my favorites in my collection and the storyline is something you didn't really see before.
It's completed, so don't fear for the Inoue effect :P
The last suggestion would be Oyasumi Punpun, which is also ongoing.
I only read the first 3 mangas so far and I'm already ordering the rest that's out there.
Not the typical slice of life and growing up manga, apart from the names the main protagonist and his family are illustrated as birds, sounds weird and it is.
The rest is shown in human form, but it's a nice try to involve the reader a bit more.
You know, all these things our parents tried to protect us from or wouldn't tell us about, are shown here with a pretty heartwarming and wrenching story at the same time.
You don't see a story that shows the flaws and great pieces of growing up so good, without relaying on stereotypes or the usual bullshit.
Great manga and I'm gonna get other work from the same author when I got more cash.
By PennywiseI'd only recommend 21st Century Boys as a joke.By psychintellectStill waiting on Inoue to finish Vagabond and REAL.Who doesn't ? :/

it's awful.
I'd recommend probabaly everything by Osama Tezuka, the godfather of manga. 'Adolf' is one of my favorites.
Hell, I think the reason why Pluto is so good is because Tezuka's source material(Astroboy) is so damn good.
By KumaJGI cry when I read Bleach, shit terribleI can't remember a time when it wasn't, to be honest. that first soul society arc was what, 10 years ago?
By psychintellectI'd only recommend 21st Century Boys as a joke.Haven't read 20th or 21st, so I can't really speak about that.

Still need to read further stuff from Master Keaton to get an idea where the series is heading.
I like Pluto for both, the fantastic source stuff which is present all the time and the style and narrative that Urasawa used.
I'll finally get the latest mangas from Oyasumi Punpun tomorrow.

You've read Monster though, right? I guess the following maybe spoilers:
You know how Monster became really convoluted near the end and pretty confusing? It's tolerable since it happens near the end of the story and doesn't drag it all the way down but does hurt the quality of the plot which was well told up until those few final arcs.
Convoluted doesn't even begin to describe 20/21st Century boys. It's like in Kingdom Hearts where as more games comes out, more characters are pretty inexplicably connected to Sora, everyone is Sora ffs! it's really clear very early on that Urasawa thought of a really cool scenario but had no plot or vision of where the story was going to go and started making shit up as he went along. It sucks because the beginning of the series showed such promise. It's why Pluto is great, it's very concise and he knows where he wants to take the plot. Probably helps that Tezuka's son was a supervisor. Even if it does suffer from convolution near the end, I think it's Urasawa's trademark at this point.
oh snap, i didnt even realize there was one of these on here.
so who else is hoping that secret wars and convergence ends with another marvel vs dc crossover?

there is little humour to it and the fights are pointless, they take less time than one punch man
when better ones have been cancelled I don't see it lasting long
Reading through Hickman's Marvel work in preparation for Secret Wars. Currently halfway through his Fantastic Four run. It's been sensational. Exactly the kind of thing I like. Crazy sci-fi shenanigans.
Secret Warriors was also pretty good.
Another recent series I finished off is the GOAT though. Hitman by Ennis and McCrea. So good.

You have the floor.
So I just finished Miracleman and you can see in the entire change of tone and story where Moore left off and Gaiman took over. I've always thought Gaiman was the better writer but after reading miracleman I am leaning towards Moore
By parallax Go To Post the kid miracleman arc defined moores series. that was very brutal.
Oh yeah, he held no punches and considering when that book came out I know that arc had to be the first of its kind in comics.

Gaiman's probably the best author of our time. Sandman is probably the best comic of all time.

The Punisher was the best moment. The worst moment was Reed watching his entire family die. That really sucked.
Heard a rumor Marvel is changing shit after SW. Some of the characters are getting the GL and Batman nu52 treatment. As in it isn't a reboot but shit is different.
Hopefully my boy Peter gets his life back.

That's what my buddy is saying. Also, they really have no idea what is going to happen at the end of SW. Most creators are in the dark. Some were told to finish their story lines with in 6 months.
i hope they see what happened with the nu52 and not make an attempt like that. if you cant come with a concrete idea, then just go with what you have and stack onto it. angela could have really benefited by being added in after secret. marvelman could as well. but a tacked on reboot when you have no idea is gonna do nothing but confuse and piss people off.
