Think I realized why I'm drawn to OLED so much....
They're basically the equivalent to Pioneer Kudos in today's market. I couldn't afford a Kuro because I was in college. Sure enough Pioneer folded their TV division and that GOAT tech was gone forever. The similarities are pretty even when you compare Kuro to OLED.

I had gotten my mom a Kuro plasma as my first Christmas gift to her after getting my first steady, full-time job. She never had it plugged into a surge protector and it died in a storm a couple years later. It was part of the last line of Kuros so there were no more replacement parts to replace the things that broke. The insurance I had bought for it didn't have any equivalent TV because, well, they didn't exist anymore.
I have identified 2018 as the year I'm jumping in. Scorpio is coming out Holiday 2017. CES 2018 will be right around the corner. Volta or next GPU after that should start making news. 4k60 will probably be possible for the first time with Volta at non Titan levels. Maybe this fucking HDR standards will be ironed out.
Maybe get some nice monitors in the mean time.
2018 brehs. Believe.
Phaze, hold

By reilo Go To PostI'll be shocked if you hold out that long.Smokey is going to keep tabs on the best gaming tv's and buy the first one that has a 33% off or better deal.
By Smokey Go To PostIt's only a year and some change.Nah, you gonna cave the very instant there are good reviews for a set revealed at the next CES.
Please believe in me :(
holding out to buy an LG Z99 for 5000 seems like a horrible idea. If you want to hold out for a price drop that's one thing, but these sets are about as loaded as you can possibly get already in terms of post processing.
I think we'll look back at this year as the year the UHD standard was more or less met. Your Vizio P/Samsung KS line/LG Oled's should be be fine for a long long time.

I think Smokey cares about a few things: OLED, 4K, HDR, low input lag.
That's kinda impossible to find right now even if you're paying a premium.

he said the input lag on his old tv didn't really faze him so I don't see how the modern OLED's don't fit his needs right now
Not that it didn't faze me, but what I was getting at is the primary reason to choose a ks8000 over an OLED tv, outside of price is its input lag. OLED has a higher input lag than the KS, but compared to my current TV, it's most likely much lower. I'd still get the best PQ available in OLED with performance better than what I'm currently using .
2018 makes plenty of sense. There are now two 4k capable gaming machines on the market. One happens to be the cheapest UHD player available. TV manufactures will probably start paying more atterion to gaming performance in these sets going forward.
Also can't emphasize enough how much fukkery is going on with HDR at the moment. Again now that there are 2 additional boxes that will use HDR, we should see some dramatic improvements in performance in that area.
Bigger screen OLED panels (65"+) ain't gonna do nothing but get cheaper.

I'm interested in seeing what Panasonic brings to the OLED market. Until the specs get better in terms of input lag and proper HDR, I'm gonna sit tight with my VT60 Plasma. This thing puts out a gorgeous image.
lol
oleds have such a high floor on pricing and I don't see that changing anytime soon
55 inch OLED's are still retailing at 1400 ffs for 1080p

I'll probably cave when video sources are actually 4k.
It looks like it's going to take years for cable and internet to get there.

By Smokey Go To PostDirecTV has a 4k receiverNot that I use DirecTV (or watch much TV), but seriously, how many channels actually come out at 4k though?
Couch gaming is not there. Video through internet is not there. It feels like TV sets tech moves at a MUCH faster pace than content delivery.

They have some sports that are broadcast in 4K, a 4k channel, and on demand 4k. At least they're offering something.
And I think the only people doing 720p are fox and ESPN. It's very apparent and looks terrible.
By 2018 hopefully therss more content :)

Sweet, the THX tune-up app just updated to support Chromecast. That makes it much easier to use for many people.
F the hype around HDR. Just the way people talk about I really thought like I was missing out on something monumental.
So I went to the guys who originally fitted out my flat to ask for a demo, dont get me wrong, it's more vibrant but I was taken through quite a bit of content and there were alot of things I saw where I preferred the non HDR screen.

As I educate myself I've determined the items I need to have in my next tv
10-bit panel
4:4:4 support
Full array LED/OLED
Acceptable input lag W/ HDR enabled
HDMI 2.1

Basically a question of if 2017 vizios can get hdr through port 5 or if the 2017 samsungs can dump edge lit for fald

Also, Smokey, since you were educating yourself, what things do you think it would be important to have in the OP? I really don't like massive OPs and want to keep it relatively short but informative.
8-bit v 10-bit panels is one that immediately comes to mind.
Maybe a note about certain groups I.e. ultra HD Premium and what sets have to have to qualify for that .

That doesn't surprise me at all. I used to look into home audio that would be equivalent to my headphone setup and equal quality was like a 500% price increase. And when some headphones can run into the multiple thousands, well...

AVS is scratching that itch. So much content. Used to post there heavy when I bought the legendary 200lb Sony Xbr 34" CRT. That thing was heavy af, but the PQ at the time was astonishing.

Mostly just changed the section between the good site links and the calibration into a glossary of important terms/technologies.
e: I welcome any kind of feedback. I am trying to keep things simple so that if someone comes in and has no idea about anything, they aren't overwhelmed with the information I laid out.
Vizio P has a firmware upgrade coming to fix issues with Xbox One S HDR support and they also claim to be bringing HDR gaming lag down to 42 MS--not great but better than the 60 or so MS that is it is now in HDR mode.
Also offered a pretty strong hint that future sets will be p. gud in terms of input lag.
Think I'm going to keep an eye out for 2017 tv's.

yeah the KS is legit on that note...only question with that model is the edge lit
if we could just get a version with FALD we'd be good, but like I said there's no chance that one of the vizio or samsung 2017 models won't have fixed their flaws from 16
By Dark PhaZe Go To Postyeah the KS is legit on that note…only question with that model is the edge litI sure hope so, but I don't have faith in the manufacturers fixing flaws in previous versions without introducing new ones.

And, yeah, the lack of full-array backlighting is the only thing that I'm kind of sad about with the KS8000, even if it isn't something I really notice much.
honestly if I could just see a KS in a dark room with HDR content that'd be all I need to make a decision now
maybe I should get into bestbuy soon
but I DO have a habit of watching movies in pretty much pure black environments

Now imagine the 2018 models when they have an additional year to improve along with HDR standardization.
New firmware for my tv installed today. Reset everything to factory default settings like I do most devices that get a firmware update. Spent 45 minutes recalibrating everything and also testing to make sure things behaved as they should.
E: so many combinations of display and special display modes that need slightly different calibration settings

Thinking hard about Sony XBR43X800D.

This would be an exclusive gaming TV. Only $650 on Amazon. $150 cheaper than I paid for my 27" RoG Swift monitor.

By Smokey Go To PostFamFor a relatively cheap stop-gap until a TV with HDR that you would be happy with comes out, I think that's fine. If you have a Steam Link, I couldn't really recommend using it with this TV. The input lag of the TV is fine on it's own, but would stray into "annoyance" level when combined with a Link.

This passage from that review is pretty important:
We tested the 43" (XBR43X800D). Note that the 49" variation (XBR49X800D) has an external power brick, instead of the internal one in the 43". The 49" also has an IPS panel, so expect a lower native contrast ratio and wider viewing angle compared to the 43" model we reviewed.
I prefer IPS panels over VA panels for image quality.
VA panels are still good and can offer better contrast ratios (mainly from deeper blacks) than IPS, but the viewing angle thing is big for me since my TV spends a lot of time entertaining guests spread across my living room. That TV also has no local dimming so you will be getting backlit blacks no matter what, anyway.
I never take viewing angles into consideration when purchasing a TV, since I don't live in a space where the TV acts as the entertainment unit. Even in my old house in Portland I didn't care because it was used as a Chromecast station for playing music.
