I'm pretty sure Blackhat is going to be the dumbest movie of the year and I will be there in the theater opening weekend.
I guess Taken 3 is this month, too, but I didn't see Taken 2.

Top 5 was great, definitely a great Chris Rock movie. Also caught the gambler and Jesus it's bad. Why does Mark Walberg keep getting roles as an intellectual?
So many sequels and clichés (wtf is an "innocent sexual encounter" for a 19 yr old girl besides porn-predator bait?)! Only one Oscar-like film on this list. And that woman on 50 Shades looks so busted yet that movie is gonna profit in the hundreds of millions.
Glado there's a renaissance in Indie gaming. Film looks dead to profit.

her looking busted was the point. They need the millions of housewives who bought the book to be able to relate to her like they did the character in the book. If that movie was being made for guys Olivia wilde or Emily blunt would be in it.
Was the most recent hunger games any good? Besides J Law thirst? I went to see the 2nd and was disappointed.
By andthebeatgoesonWas the most recent hunger games any good? Besides J Law thirst? I went to see the 2nd and was disappointed. It's pretty good. I loved Catching Fire and it's not on that level. It some nice moments, but it serves mostly as table setting for part two.

as a standalone, it doesn't feel like a full length movie,
but its a good set-up for the good finale.

lol. there are hundreds of good movies every year.
Outside of Star Wars I am not looking forward to any of the big hollywood movies... well Mad Max looks cool but outside of those two? I care for nothing.
Saw Selma last weekend. It was good but I didn't enjoy it that much.
It's definitely gonna be a classroom staple like Glory.

I have a lot of faith that the new Star Wars will be good.
Abrams seems perfect for the series. Handles characters well, has a compelling visual style, and SW doesn't present as many of the potential story problems that Star Trek does. It's typically pretty straightforward, good vs. evil stuff.

And unlike with Star Trek, Abrams utterly loves the Star Wars franchise. He never grew up a Trek fan, yet the first movie was spectacular.

If there are millions of housewives that look like that, then no wonder there is so much divorce.
By psychintellectWould like to see inherent vice sometime soon.
Probably my favorite film of 2014. Entertaining as shit.

jesus. that's way too harsh, she looks absolutely fine.
I'm excited for the Hateful Eight. There are few people I trust more to deliver an instant classic than Tarantino.
Couple of quick thoughts on two streaming movies.
The Spectacular Now is fantastic. I watched this on a recommendation from people that loved Whiplash and Miles Teller is just as good here and continues to be great in everything I've seen him in. This movie has the most real feeling teenagers and coming of age story I've seen in a long time. It's refreshing when you're presented with people that are supposed to be 17-18 years old and don't talk like they're in a Diablo Cody movie. Totally recommend it.
On a whim, I took in the Australian film Mystery Road. It's a great, slow burn detective story, with some really nice work from the lead, an actor named Aaron Pederson who I'd never seen before, and a nice supporting turn from Hugo Weaving. It's a really nice looking film, too, with this great dusty, bleak, western-esque aesthetic. I dug it.

Couple (not white) people on my FB feed have had enough to say about Selma to make up for the deafening silence. Anyone go see it?

I'm seeing it tomorrow and it looks like my type of movie but it seemed like there were a lot of negative reviews.
I missed a ton of movies last year (heck, I didn't even watch Interstellar and I was hyped for it all year, I was lucky I got to watch Budapest Hotel) so I'm looking forward to getting back on track this year.
From the OP at least Star Wars, Avengers, Inside Out, Hunger Games and Spectre I'm watching for sure, but I'm looking forward to watch more foreign films and hidden gems in general as well.
Is Hateful Eight a 2015 film?

It's a really nice looking movie and there are some nice individual performances, but it's boring and Nolan doesn't do anything with all the acting talent he's assembled. I had problems with the tone and story telling, as well. It wants to be thrilling and sappy all at the same time and, yeah, the scene on the water planet is pretty tense, but overall it just didn't work for me.
Grand Budapest Hotel is fantastic, though!
I'll be doing a monthly "what movie to see this month" post.

Just got back from Inherent Vice...gonna need someone to explain this one to me. I don't know if it was the theater, but Joaquin Phoenix sounded like he was mumbling the whole movie and I couldn't understand half of what he said.
The only thing I liked about it was the visual style and that it got more than a few laughs out of me but it was incredibly disappointing.

One would think it would be getting more attention from the media/publicity what with the Fifty Shades of Grey craze coming soon :P

I won passes for a screening of Blackhat. I do not expect this movie to be good, since I didn't care too much for Miami Vice or Public Enemies, but I'm excited all the same.

I've heard some great things about "Duke..." from people I trust. Everyone is over the lesbian thing since Blue Is The Warmest Color ruined the idea of what beautiful lesbian sex is for us straight dudes.

By ForeverI watched Predestination and it's pretty shit. I was able to figure out what was going on about 15 minutes in, and once you figure out what's going on the rest of the movie is a waste of time.
I realized the fact that he was her relatively quickly..... but the fact that he was the baby took me about an hour to figure out. Either way it wasn't a shit movie. It was a pretty good old school sci fi film. I think describing it as a Twilight zone premise stretched out is a fair comparison. I would recommend it to anyone with some time to burn since its already out there in the torrent/stream site ether anyhow.

The Birdman director snub is the tell-tale.
The lego movie not getting an oscar nod for best animated film is a joke.
its easily the best animated film of 2014 and best one in recent years.

and Selma getting a best picture nod is equivalent to white people saying "hey, im not racist. one of my best friend is black"
By viakadoand Selma getting a best picture nod is equivalent to white people saying "hey, im not racist. one of my best friend is black"Grantland had a pretty good write-up about it:
Some Academy Award nomination mornings are defined by what you hear, some by what you don’t. The big story of today’s announcement is the number of times that the name Selma was not spoken. We did not hear Ava DuVernay’s name called for Best Director. We did not hear David Oyelowo’s name called for Best Actor. We did not hear Selma announced for Best Original Screenplay, and an otherwise interesting and idiosyncratic list of choices for Best Cinematography did not include the protean (and African American) Bradford Young, who did brilliant work on both Selma and A Most Violent Year. We did hear Selma twice — for Best Song and, finally, for Best Picture. The relief at that moment was palpable. So was the frustration.
When a predominantly white, predominantly old, predominantly male voting body seems to turn its back on a movie — one made by a woman of color about black people as agents of American history that has raised the hackles of a number of splenetic older white men with powerful platforms — it is not unreasonable to ask questions about whether a particular kind of soft racism is in play. I think it would be a big mistake to dismiss that out of hand, just as it would be a mistake to say that gender had absolutely nothing to do with the almost-all-male directors’ branch omitting DuVernay, who is in no way a member of their club. If you don’t believe that more often than not, people tend to vote for people who look like them, consider that, as I write this, 20 white actors and actresses are wondering whether it’s too early in the day for a little champagne.
I bring all this up not to justify or rationalize what certainly looks on paper like a weird combination of respect for and indifference to Selma. There are plenty of blights on Oscar’s track record with African American themes, subjects, and talent in the post-King years, and what happened today is a big one — it’s up there with the omission of Spike Lee from the directing race for Do the Right Thing in 1989 and the documentary branch’s shrug-off of Hoop Dreams in 1994. But the Academy didn’t suddenly turn more racist between the time McQueen was jumping for joy onstage 11 months ago and this morning, so let’s look at some other factors.

It probably has more to due with the producer not getting the screeners out to all the members on time. I know a few Academy members that were mad because they didn't have time to see the movie in theater and they didn't receive screeners. Only voting producers got the screeners and they are the ones that vote for best pictures.
In short Selma fucked Selma. Blame the producer for not campaigning. The biggest fuck up is releasing it the way they did. It wasn't done until a few days before its debut press screening. They should have sat on it. Released it next year with a heavy marketing campaign and a release date that is after Thanksgiving.
We like to scream that the Academy is full of old and out of touch people but movies like "her" and "12 Years A Slave" were present last year due to their producers going full steam during the lead up to the voting.
"A Most Violent Year" is more than likely snubbed for the same reasons. They both went into production in 2014.
and the director thing is dumb. 4 directors got snubbed. Like they do each year since expanding up to 10 movies.
