Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

Plotwise, there's a lot of ground to cover in Civil War (even at two-and-a-half hours). But the Russos juggle all of the murky motivations and shifting alliances with impressive deftness.
-Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly
[T]he best Marvel yet, with the greatest superhero action on film. It's immense, marvelous action-packed fun... [T]he single greatest pure superhero movie ever made.
- Mark Hughes, Forbes
This movie is so toothless that you'll probably pay for your ticket in a paper cup on the side of the road... it's so concerned with keeping everything in line for future movies that it ultimately takes no risks...
- Michael Fairbanks, The Young Folks
Call it "civil war" or call it brand extension; call it a "cinematic universe" or a corporate behemoth - the latest Marvel extravaganza furthers the studio's cross-pollination of action franchises in a way that's sure to satisfy devotees.
- Sheri Linden, Hollywood Reporter
Tear away the powers, abilities and egos, though, and the third Captain America movie is at its core a deep exploration of friendship and family and what sacrifices should be made to hold onto both.
- Brian Truitt, USA Today
Directors Anthony and Joe Russo continue to mine their experience with TV comedies, juggling all the members of their superhero family with a playful touch that both informs character interaction and delivers vital breathing room in between battles.
- Dave White, The Wrap
The most mature and substantive picture to have yet emerged from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
- Justin Chang, Variety
Sorry for the 15MB cover image. Just uploaded a smaller version. Figured that might eat up a lot of unnecessary bandwidth.
pretty good movie. watched it twice already.
maybe do a third on the weekend if my friends want to go.

Really great movie, loved the villain.
Spiderman and Black Panther were also both 100% on point, marvel must have the best casting agency in the world
It's really funny going from the generic CGI fest that was the BvS final to this one, which is probably the first third act in a final movie which is just 3 men fighting against each other, no explosions or time limits or anything.

where is my early cam leak?
Spiderman was amazing.
I thought the film was boring as fuck until his introduction, then it got rammed up to 11.
Give me Homecoming already.
Give me Black Panther, too.

I real hate how most of the Avengers seemed to side with Cap.
Cap was selfish and caused the split. He fucking thinks he is above the law, so goes out of his way to protect his friend. I understand Bucky was framed, but had Cap allowed the authorities to do their job then it would have all be found out. Instead, he made everyone choose sides.
Cap betrayed Tony's trust, but the film still seemed to portray him as the moral winner in the end.
It would have been nice had War Machine died, maybe then Cap could have reflected on his actions.

Civil War was amazing. The Russo Bros have a much better grasp on the characters than Whedon ever did. Hawkeye had a personality, the movie actually acknowledged that Tony quit superheroing and Spider-Man was a pleasant surprise.
This film needs two viewings imo, and upon second viewing it's when things sink in. It's incredible some flaws of course but generally an all round incredible film.

Do they stop using quick cuts and shaky cam on a second viewing?
This is in no way an incredible film, it won´t even be Marvel´s best movie of the year. It´s just a step above average and mainly because of Spider Man, Ant Man and Black Panther.
I was disappointed yesterday and I am even more today. I was a victim of the hype but yeah, this isn´t on the top 3 Marvel movies, probably not even in the Top 5.

I didnt mind the shaky cam and but maybe thats just me. I didnt find Tony at all, if anything I thought Cap was being an idiot but I thought how the handled all the characters, motivations, actions scenes, thought it was all round a quality film. Spidey, Panter and Ant man elevated it, probably top three marvel film for knocking winter solider out. There was alot I didnt like, but for the most part thought it got majority spot on.

By Jay Whatever Go To PostWhat kinds of things require a second viewing to sink in?
I found it alot to digest on first screening, alot of characters, arcs etc. So on second viewing it was alot easier to watch because I knew what happened and picked up a decent amount I missed out first time round.
its funny because there's tons of people saying tony was in the right
this is what bvs should've been, something that actually divides people because both sides had decent arguments

And he goes and recruits a kid to fight against very powerful adversaries...
Also, I´m tired of super heroes and their daddy/mommy issues. For fuck sake, can´t you think about anything else as motivation? The revelation that Bucky killed Tony´s parents was almost as shocking as finding out that Jesus dies in the Passion Of The Christ. Tony´s tantrum against Bucky in the end is ridiculous and only exists to provoke a big final fight. The guy was under mind control, not is fault. Also when did Cap find that out?
Zemo was wasted as villain. What was the point of going to Siberia and killing the rest of the soldiers? Makes no sense and it relies on one of the most intelligent persons in the world to behave like a stupid idiot. Also they let a therapist into a max security room without even doing a visual id? They were nothing alike.
People travelling between Germany and USA like it was just right next door was kind of weird.
Caps romantic plot line felt forced, he has more chemistry with Bucky.

im not sure this even needs to be in spoiler tags but just in case lol... Martins I didn't really have a problem with Tony's motivations as it seemed as tho he was learning/growing from his mistakes. They've all done some fucked up shit while being avengers and the kid dying was his moment of clarity, it would have been fairly inconsequential had he not met the mother imo. Sure he probably knew innocents got killed but at the time he probably thought for the Greater good, the mother made it a little closer to home and a "yeah we do need to put ourselves in some kind check". I don't even think he wanted total surrender like he said they would work the details out but it was about being accountable. Mind control or not I can be empathetic to Tony being heated at Bucky for killing his folks especially as cap Knew.
Looks like I'll end up seeing this movie on Friday morning. My boss just emailed me that we have an "off-site" meeting and have to leave the office before 8:50am
I looked at the local theater that's 10 minutes away and they have an early showing around 9:15.
My hand has been forced.

Had cap allowed the authorities to do their job and find Bucky, then it might have eventually been revealed what happened. However, he fell right into the trip and tried to rescue his old friend

I saw this last week. I liked it a lot, although I'm not keen to rank it or anything like that. It's not a lean, direct narrative like TWS, but I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse, just a different kind of conflict.
I don't think either Tony or Steve were right, but I sided with IM for most of it. They were both wrong and that was pretty obvious from the conclusion, both too emotionally invested and too stubborn to notice. But that's what made it more personal and interesting too.
BvS comparisons are inevitable and they go beyond the superficial concept of the heroes fighting, right down to the structure and editing of the film. It almost feels like a response to it, and if it was a year apart I'd actually believe it was. I didn't think much of BvS; poor execution, boring, lots of script problems, and while this one has its issues because it is a stuffed movie, it really does feel like it does almost everything better. It doesn't handle its themes with the seriousness, dark real world perspective or the intellectuality from Snyder's movie, but it never needs to and its better for it.
Oh and Martins: Tony wasn't swayed because "a kid died" just like the gun control arguments in America don't exist because "a kid died" either. It's an accumulation of things that weigh heavy on him and come at a time when's he's not quite sure if he's still doing what it is best, and is also breaking his personal life apart.
No gonna pretend the movie didn't stretch the logic in places, especially with Zemo, but some of what you say seems to me it was explained in there.

I was hoping War Machine would die, it would have added some meaning to the whole fight, that there was an actual consequence of these guys all being dicks
I'll spoiler it just in case.
I enjoyed it, but The Winter Soldier is leagues better...
Character motivations feel all over the place, especially Stark's. The catalyst for him springing into action is damn near the same story that's in his other films. If you take this as a singular film and not apart of a universe, it's not as bad. When you look at the bigger picture that encompasses all of the other films...some of the stuff doesn't add up.So, neither Black Widow or Tony know about the General? Tony didn't feel bad when Wanda was mind fucking them for damn near the exact same reason the mom was sad in this. lol.
Zemo was a waste of an antagonist. While the conflict of the two opposing ideologies is supposed to be the main antagonistic force between the sides, Zemu is the reason anything happens. His plan was based on even more luck than Lex's was. His motivation is damn near identical to Scarlet and Quicksilver's in Avengers 2.He's a retread without any deep psychological musings and has the power of having everything fall into place perfectly. No need for a backup plan. He also does one of the silliest things I've seen, outside of Lex trying to dap up Doomsday.
The painting of the Avengers as a reckless band of heroes wasn't exactly portrayed that well. BvS did a much better job in the first 20 minutes and the court room scene, discussing Clark's unilateral actions in Africa. Here, they're getting their asses kissed while having the flimsiest of evidence thrown at them. "You guys blew up New York! Pay no attention to the aliens that glassed that area. Thanks for handling that, by the way" "You dropped a carrier in D.C., but just so you know EVERYONE is thankful that you stopped Hydra from killing literally everyone. Also, good job on exposing Hydra, since they were in every single government on the planet."
The framework behind the accords even happening was based on a mistake, and nothing like..."this mutant lost control and blew up five city blocks." I'm sure those people on the ground, sure were glad that Scarlet didn't let them get blown to Bolovia. Since it's Captain's movie, you don't even get to see how Scarlet and Vision handle her grieving process, and then they're supposed to have feelings for each other? "I made you a pot of chilli." "Oh thanks bae..."
Personally, I felt absolutely no confusion on which side to choose at the end. The movie basically does it for you. Steve is an absolute asshole the entire run time and it manages to make Tony Stark, of all the characters, sympathetic.
Did The Winter Soldier use this much shaky cam? I could follow the action, but damn. The clearest fight scene (and the best) was the one at the very end, and I feel like it wasn't present much, if at all. Also felt like it had the highest stakes...though for reasons having nothing to do with signing papers or a tiff between friends. Classic case of one person loving another to much and getting their heart broken.
Spider-Man was amazing.
Ant-Man was amazing.
Black Panther was amazing.
I dunno. Half way into nitpick territory, so I'll stop. I did like it, but I'm just a little disappointed.
Why did Black Widow turn into the mother hen of the group? I get that she needed to be humanized, but what the hell...

FUCK TONY STARK. He's a horrible human being that is more concerned looking like he's on the right side than just doing good. He isn't a hero. He's an opportunist. I really thought the last few minutes was going to make him change but nope he gets the fucking hand wave to continue being a selfish prick.
Can't believe anyone here would pick him over Cap.
Some thoughts about the movie. The sense of time and scale is difficult to understand. The big action scene is confusing. People jump around the world in what seems like hours. Characters jump from inside to outside a building even after they were supposed to be incapacitated. The editing isn't as smooth as it should be. Too many moving parts that cause the story to just run on.
The last 5 minutes is utter fucking bullshit and just Marvel playing it safe.
Spider-man was dope as fuck. Hopefully he sees the light and goes Team Cap a..k.a Tony was wrong just like Black Panther did at the end.

By Apollo Go To PostI like the movie but it has huge flaws.Tony is a realist, he has no holier than thou convictions, he believes in doing what is right when any situation arises. I think the film did a lot to show that he isn't just an arrogant prick who does what he wants. He knows his actions have consequences, and he knows he is just one man. He knows he shouldn't have the power decide what is right and wrong.

Cap is the real arrogant prick. He believes he moral code is greater than any single human or organisation. Fuck international law, he wants to save his m8 and doesn't care who gets hurt in the progress.

There has never been any movie in the MCU series where Tony didn't think he was better than anyone else and that his way would fix it. Each time he doesn't listen to anyone and he just splinters relationships.
Cap just wants to help. He sees the good in everyone. Yes, he wants to protect his friend but he also knows Bucky was brainwashed.
Cap's point was made when he said what happens when they don't want the Avengers to help someone. That's because he was once a tool for the government. He's already been under command and knows about agendas.
Tony is typical capitalistic fascist. That's why Clint called him out when he went to visit them. Tony doesn't care about being good. Tony cares about being right.
And remember at the end Tony attacks Cap before he can even explain about the brainwashing. He just attacks him because he's upset.
Spoiled fucking childish reaction.
Tony was on that shit too, but Cap was way worse here. lol. He deserved a jericho missile being launched at him for being mum on Stark's parents, while acting like they're buddies.
By Xpike Go To Postbut it was still a mistake because Scarlet Witch couldn't handle her powers properly and wasn't combat ready, and Cap got distracted and didn't check properly for a bomb. The team failed in the mission and it was 100% on them.I'm going to see it again, so maybe I'll feel differently on my second viewing. It felt like they tried to play her off as some type of monster, just because she didn't/couldn't/didn't know how to hold the explosion. She was in a panic and did the equivalent of throwing the bomb in the ocean. It was mission success, if not for Steve shutting down over hearing Buckey's name. That's squarely on him, especially since he's the leader and a soldier. If she wasn't there...everyone would have died.
Tony locked a person in his house and wouldn't let her leave. Tony used his status as a billionaire to convince a child to help him fight. A child he had tracked down how? The only way that could happen is if Tony is spying and tracking superheroes. Tony started a fight because he didn't want to wait for answers. Tony helped the UN pass a bill that limited an individual's right to choose.

When Tony saw that greiving mother he actually changed. he realised that the avengers have too much power. Who checks on them? Why do they get to decide what is good???
Tony actually developed as a character, Cap just keeps on thinking whatever he does is better than anyone else. He is arrogant and with no checks.
Tony is a prick, but he wants to help people. He has seen that what he perceives as the greater good comes with consequences, consequences he believes no one man or group of extraordinary individuals should decide.
Cap ignored all the international institutions and his selfish nature caused more harm than good.
And you know what, Tony is human. You telling me you are gonna stand around and listen to an explantion on why your parents were killed? Tony isn't perfect, but he does feel human emotions.
Loved the movie. Feel like I'm going to need to rewatch it a few times to catch everything going on in some shots.
The child soldier shit has me dieing. lol. He broke a couple bands and threatened to snitch on Parker. Stark ain't shit.
Tony running the fade was one of the most human things in the film. He didn't hear the bad news from his "friend." He had to hear it from the villain. Steve couldn't say shit and knew he fucked up. To make matters worse, he even talked about being cool with Tony's dad. lol.
Steve could have explained the entire situation at the airport, but nope. Gotta get to the jet.
Winter Soldier isn't the first person to suffer from split personality problems (hell, they've all been brainwashed). lol. Come to think of it, his story is similar to the Hulks. Banner actually felt guilty and tried to rectify the situation by removing himself from the equation. Cap's entire plan was to hide out with his friend and then what? Never get him help? Anybody with a red book and a megaphone would have Bucky back on the assassination gig, thanks to Cap.
