Microsoft Allowing Cross-Play
On the Heels of GDC today, Microsoft has announced that they are FINALLY opening the Xbox ecosystem to the possibility of Cross-platform play. the big take away from this is that the decision for MonoGame is left to the developer.
while it is starting with the ID@xbox program, the way the release is worded is strongly indicative of it being for more than that.
So Hopefully some of the bigger multiplatform titles will take advantage of the increased player pool of PSN/PC/Xbone combined.

Just a note, this is Cross-Play functionality, not Cross-Party functionality. So theoretically you could get a lobby going, but no ability to do XBL to PS4 party chat.

That's huge. Good job, MS. Their new CEO is alright, although hopefully it's not too little too late for them.
Im glad that it is in the hands of the Devs themselves.
like Treyarch could say "next CoD will have Cross play" and the room would explode.

I really don't think big publishers are very interested on cross-play, I think indie developers will be the ones using this feature more.
Also Sony won't be that interested in allowing it as most games are reaching graphical parity and the big decider on multiplayer heavy games is what platform do your friends have. They have the bigger crowd right now and it is much more profitable for them to keep the "doors" closed for XBox users as many of them could eventually make the jump to the PS4 if most of their friends are playing it on the PS4.
That´s the same reason why Microsoft didn't this last gen, it really wasn't beneficial for them.

Sony had already allowed cross-play with a few PC and Wii games. And one of the previous Final Fantasy games did it with PS2 and Xbox. Microsoft was the only one taking a hard stance against it since.

Microsoft was the only one taking a hard stance against it since.Because they were ahead of the game and were the multiplayer platform of choice of the past generation. They now lost that position and are the only ones who hugely benefit from this happening. I can see Sony allowing this in a case by case basis and many indie releases and a few MMO´s actually using it but if people are expecting the next FIFA or COD to have cross play, they will probably be hugely disappointed.
It would never happen but it would be great if people never had to worry about population issues in games. As gamers we would never have to worry about "should I really spend $60 on a game that might be dead in 2 months?". Publishers would love this because that means more sales for them.
This comes down to MS and Sony playing nice. Well, just Sony at this point since MS is the one that planted the idea.
