How much does Audible drain a modern smartphone battery?
Would prefer to listen through my mp3 player, but I'm not sure you can split the books into chapters when you do that.

By giririsss Go To PostBest thing about the S8 (outside of the much improved camera and awesome screen)? Wireless charging docks.
Worst thing? The pointlessness of Bixby and the Bixby button.
People have already got apps out that let you remap the button. But still… stupid.
Isnt it the same camera as last year with some better software?
By Hitch Go To PostHow much does Audible drain a modern smartphone battery? Not sure about Audible specifically, but playing just sound with the screen turned off is a small drain on the battery when I do it through the Play Music or Twitch apps. Drains it probably three times faster than just letting the phone idle with wi-fi turned on but bluetooth turned off.

Just put in an order for an Eero and two beacons for my mom. Aesthetics are super important for her and they are definitely the best looking ones. She already uses some night lights in the hallways, so the beacons will nicely fit there, too.
As for why I went for a mesh network with her, the base router is in a room that is half-covered with windows. There are also lots of walls in addition to the windows between the base router and the guest bedrooms and bath. This means half the house gets spotty wi-fi. The screened porch where she likes to sit and read sometimes is also separated from the house by a wall of windows so the signal struggles to get out that way, too.

I am really, really happy that MS has gone all-in on developing accessibility solutions for computer users in the last couple years.
And my mom's Eero has been set up. Only snag I had was when adding a beacon. The app ui appeared to be stuck on a step and I waited for several minutes for it to connect. Turns out, that screen was the only one I needed to scroll down on. I increase the text size on my phone and many apps don't handle it well. That I needed to scroll down was not presented well.
Other than that, it was pretty smooth. Few good outlets to plug them in at my mom's. It couldn't share an outlet with an air-freshner (of which there are many), too few outlets in most rooms, and some which had physical obstructions for the beacon.
She loved the nightlight feature and showed a bit of excitement when I told her she should now have a strong enough signal to water her outside plants and still have a strong enough signal to listen to LSU Sports on her WatchESPN app. She also asked me how much it cost and was not so happy about the amount I spent on her. Lol
One cool thing the app did was show me the speeds of her Internet. It is way too good for what she uses it for. She was getting 90/50 and all she does is use it for email, browsing, shopping, and streaming sports. She also lives alone. Told her she could save some money by downgrading her plan. I get a little more than half of that and it is more than good enough for me.

Cross-posting from the gaming thread for the people who are looking for some cheap, good mobile headphones: Massdrop is about to release an updated version of the Koss Porta Pro called the Massdrop x Koss Porta Pro X. Will be available Thursday for $38.
The changes to the original are an inline noise-canceling mic, thicker cable with strain relief, and a better designed y-split. It is also able to be folded up for easy storage and weighs only two ounces.
I know this reads highly like a sponsored post but it isn't one and I have no affiliation with Massdrop or Koss. I just know that the original has a fantastic reputation at its price point and the added mic is a great value for people who want decent sound at a very low cost.

aye its happening. It's gonna be mine. (The phone, not the ugly af case)
Had to spend some time today helping my mom update and fix her computer. She was trying to get free music so she could listen to Stevie Nick's and unintentionally installed malware on her machine.
After getting as much of it off her machine as I could, I went ahead and set Windows to block instead of warn against suspicious websites and subscribed to Eero Plus, which should also prevent her from reaching malware sites.
She is completely not tech savvy so I have to use options that don't give her a choice to override.

I just did 2+ hours of research into shower speakers before finally picking one that meets my audio standards and fits within a reasonable budget.
I think I have a problem.

Well, now we know why Verizon Wireless was “testing” reduced Netflix streaming speeds last month. Today the biggest US carrier announced that its existing unlimited data plan is being divided into three new options: Go Unlimited (starting at $75 for a single line), Beyond Unlimited ($85 for first line), and Business Unlimited. Unlike the relatively straightforward unlimited plan that Verizon surprised customers with in February, these new monthly plans are chock-full of fine print and caveats. And in a move sure to anger net neutrality advocates, the regular “Go Unlimited” plan throttles all smartphone video streaming to 480p / DVD-quality. The new plans go into effect beginning tomorrow, August 23rd, so this change is happening fast. Existing postpaid customers can keep their current plan, but some things will change even for them.
Unlimited 4G LTE data, but you could experience reduced speeds if the network is congested at all times. Not after 10GB or 15GB or 20GB or 22GB of full-speed data usage. If the network is congested where you are, you might get slowed down — even at the very beginning of your billing cycle.
$75/mo plan
DVD-quality video streaming (480p) on smartphones and HD (720p) video streaming on tablets. There’s no way to watch at higher resolution for either.
Unlimited mobile hotspot, but hotspot speeds are capped at a maximum of 600kbps.
$85/mo plan
HD video streaming on smartphones (limited to 720p) and Full HD 1080p video streaming for tablets. There is no way to stream videos at 1080p or higher on phones — period. And I almost switched a few months ago 🙄 but decided to wait on the iPhone 8
Unlimited mobile hotspot data with up to 15GB of LTE speeds. If your laptop is tethered to your phone, video quality on your laptop will be limited to 1080p.
A Verizon spokesperson told me that the old price was an “introductory” price that was inevitably going to change.jerkoffs
That iphone 8 model looks ... ugly.
The thing protruding from the top into the middle is weird. Seems very un-apple to have something to utilitarian protrude onto a design.

LG V30 looks pretty promising. Some specific changes to their V line, but I think it's what people want and expect now. If they can nail the price then they'll have a contender.
Samsung asking nearly a $1,000 for the Note 8. Bixby: fuck off with that.

Is there a way to chamge the default size of the videos on Youtube?

Anyone know if you can download entire YouTube playlists?
Looking like I'm gonna be without internet and TV for almost two weeks after moving, so need something to watch through the pc library unless I can convince a neighbour to let me pay to share their connection for a while

By Hitch Go To PostAnyone know if you can download entire YouTube playlists?I don't know about entire playlists at once but there are multiple ways of downloading off YouTube. There's a tiny freeware program you can get called 4k Video Downloader that works pretty well. Just copy and paste the URL.

By Smokey Go To Postyoooooo im still on the v10 smhThis model loses the removable battery for water proofing but has everything else every other flagship this fall is shipping with.
It sounds really good and appears to be launching under $800 in the US, which would make it $200 less than the Note 8, and between $2-400 less than the next iPhone.
LG is not marketing the thing at all outside of South Korea right now though for some reason.
All four US carriers will have it at launch with different pre-order promotions.
It's the first and only phone confirmed so far to support T-Mobiles 600MHz LTE band.
By Kidjr Go To PostJust realised note 8 has headphone jack. Game set match tbhAll phones not called iPhone have a headphone jack.
Honestly, the only thing the Note 8 has over Sony's Premium XZ or this new LG V30 is the stylus.
Do you plan on using the stylus or feel that it's a must have feature? Is it worth the additional few hundred to you?
I like my S7 a lot, but there's no way I would pay what they're asking for this Note 8 when the competition is bringing comparable performance, and in a few ways, better features at a much cheaper price.

Yeah I didn't know this was coming at all. I wanted to go to the new iPhone, but the v10 has treated me very well over the years.
By YungMagus Go To PostYo what phone I should get:One Plus 3T
Google Pixel XL or Oneplus 5
By s y Go To PostOne Plus 3T
Tell me more
By YungMagus Go To PostTell me moreThe improvements in the 5 are marginal at best. The 3T has the same camera(Which is pretty darn good), runs almost stock android so it's super fast(the 3T has a better cpu and front facing cam) and One Plus is fairly quick with updates. Still one of, if not the fastest fingerprint sensor on the market.
Nice 1080p OLED screen. idk if you care about 4k on your 5-6 inch phone so that may be a downside.
The only reason I'd go for the more premium phones is the waterproofing(Which the pixel doesn't even have).

So read up on V30 and I think the difference in screen size and camera quality is enough for me.
By Kidjr Go To PostSo read up on V30 and I think the difference in screen size and camera quality is enough for me.I haven't read anything that makes it seem like the V30 camera is poor. It sounds most outlets are impressed with it actually. And the wide angle shots with the dual cams gives it a leg up I think.
But if .3" in screen size is enough for you so justify the price difference then I suppose the Note is the way to go.
LG is certainly shitting the bed right now with their marketing. No firm release date or pricing for EU or NA. No pre-order talk. Nothing. It's mindbogglingly dumb to announce new tech--specifically a phone--and send out pre-reproduction units to bloggers and not follow any of that up with information on how the buying public can join in.
Obviously the various carriers hold a lot of power over shelf space and marketing deals, but LG has got to do better. Samsung market the shit out of their phones everywhere. Apple announce three sku's and three days later you can pre-order. That's how it should be done.

More so because in all honesty, I will be consuming the majority of media through my phone (Netflix, amazon etc) and also the v30 has issues with displaying colours consistently. I can live with the black bars due to the weird aspect ratio but if I'm going to spend that kinda money on a phone might as well go the full nine yards and get the best screen available on the market.
Same. Pixel, V30 or even Sony's XZ Premium now that it's below $600 online.
Would have to buy the Pixel or XZ outright, but the V30 would be about $30 a month through T-mobile and would be covered under my insurance.
Still need to see the Pixel and LG in person.

By Hitch Go To PostWhen you hook a laptop up to a TV through hdmi, how do you change the resolution?Do you have it setup to duplicate? Don't think I'll bother fixing it if it takes more than a minute, will only be doing it on and off til Tuesday
Does android have a known issue with cancelling downloads when they're paused, when the phone goes into sleep or when chrome is restarted? Been trying to download a video from giamtbomb all night, and it's automatically restarted from the beginning about 4 times. Given up now.

I sometimes turn my over-ear headphone volume way up and leave them around my neck

The "Bionic" part in the name of Apple's A11 Bionic chip isn't just marketing speak. It's the most powerful processor ever put in a mobile phone. We've put this chip to the test in both synthetic benchmarks and some real-world speed trials, and it obliterates every Android phone we tested.https://www.tomsguide.com/us/iphone-8-benchmarks-fastest-phone,review-4676.html
Smokey 👀
I actually thought the real-world tests were more impressive, if you arent impressed by the "who cares about video editing" benchmarks, loading a game in 11 seconds vs 19 seconds is pretty huge.
So, if "bionic" isn't just marketing speak, then Apple has successfully made chips constructed partially out of living matter?
:p
