Pulled off my first stealth mission today. Three man squad, mission to hack a workstation in an Advent train. Made it to the roof of a building right next to the train, had my Specialist hack it from the roof top and then evac'ed on the next turn before the two pods on the ground could get up.
So apparently 1.1 of LW is out. They moved some Shinobi perks around I believe, so I might start over again to satisfy my min-maxing neuroses.
Edit: Looks like none of my guys were high enough rank to get screwed up, onward!

I didn't know!! lol now get on discord!!

Like Dodge wasn't enough RNG bullshit.
the damage range is already wide enough as it is. i get its a way to encourage and deepen your reliance on equipment and abilities but fuck
Turns out some map packs aren't entirely lw2 compatible because they create bigger areas than intended - timers are putting you completely up against a wall sometimes

2017 and people don't play with true concealment, or timers off completely.

I have not ran into a map problem yet...
Your people can be captured now. omg. That rookie I left? Yeah.... she's not dead. Captured. ADVENT fucking has her. The bastards...
I went ahead and downloaded true concealment just now. Gonna see how that works. There's a LW2 version out now.
By blackace Go To PostI have not ran into a map problem yet…I didn't believe it until I got hit with a resistance rescue mission where I had to cross Nevada in 13 turns. I did it, with said losses, but it was ridiculous.

I think I'm going back to LW1.
LW2 punishes you for playing aggressively because if you pull an extra pod when you already have one active you just die. But then they make cover 1) more effective, and 2) harder to destroy. So you end up getting into long, drawn-out fights where you shoot at each other from high cover, since even Sapper grenades are inconsistent at best and you can't flank or you'll pull more pods...which means you get fucked by turn timers. Add to that the fact that most of your shots are going to graze for basically no damage, and the whole thing is just stupid.
Not to the mention the completely random placement of pods. You might run the same mission on the same map twice, take the same path, and either run into one pod the whole time or run into four camping on top of the objective.
They need to decide if they want the game to be a strategy game where positioning and troop movement (beyond "run towards the evac/relay/whatever") matter, or if they want the game to be a rushed, stealthy, timed infiltration exercise. You can't really have both.

I think I expanded too fast. Really hard to manage ADVENT strength levels and get your roster stacked properly...
Also, LOVE the changes to the AWC.

Managing just 4 havens is madness.
I'm starting to see the benefits of dedicated teams now too. You kinda get to the point where you need one group per region imo

Game is way deeper than I thought. I'm thinking of starting fresh but god the early missions are so fucking punishing...
By DY_nasty Go To PostI'm at the point where if I see 3 pods positioned a certain way I'll just abort with zero fucks.
that's long war 2 for ya. you're supposed to evac, pass on, and even outright fail missions. Vanilla was all about stomping every alien into a mudhole on every mission. Long War is about hit and run surviving, "fuck, how did we get here?" shenanigans.
Finally have a decent level shinobi squad (3 of em)
Off course I wipe hard in the next mission.
2 pods of Vipers just shit on me hard.

Yeah I gotta start over... I didn't know how rough of a hand I was dealt in the opening months. I didn't get an engineer or scientist until my -fourth- supply drop. I would've been better off just buying one but I hadn't felt out the economy enough yet. Once it was time to move on to laser weapons it was too late. Just losing gear checks left and right.
I may even opt to build a laboratory first on my next run.
Also, Technicals are fucking trash.

Kinda considering finish my LW1 campaign first though so I can import all of that roster into my character pool.

better men than you or i have went down this road, and it has only led to ruin.
By Trey Go To Postbetter men than you or i have went down this road, and it has only led to ruin. You know what? I did NOT do this. I instead sold the few datapads I happened across to buy two scientists and an engineer early. I had to delay my AWC a bit, but I've finally got a feel for how combat plays out now... at least better than before.
Sometimes the only option is to engage early as fuck and just get that first pod out of the way. Top often I'm trying to pass a few guys only to end up with a gang surrounding me two turns later.
Yeah.... I'm easily 3-4 months ahead of where I was on my last run.
Big changes I made - FUCK 3-4 day missions. All of them. Unless they're for something absolutely vital in the early game (scientist, engineer, supply raid, ambush) just don't. Having anything more than 3 infiltrations going at once is almost always unnecessarily dangerous. Not just because you're stretched thin, but you run the chance of hitting rough stretch of missions one after another if the aliens level up on you. Then you're looking at surprise Mutons or Sidewinders when you never prepared for anything heavier than the varying early stage grunts.
If you have just two scientists, you're set all the way through advanced laser weapons and tier 2 armor. Engineers you can kinda take as they come. Scientists are absolutely priority. You need them for churning intel and getting you some free cheap prototypes.
Haven management has to be micromanaged - no way around it. You don't need to throw advisors in there early on, but you DO need to read or at the very least understand the roles. Pick and choose where you're trying to stir up activity. It does fluctuate often and it can be manipulated with missions as well as your strategic attention. If you're not scanning in a region and you're not looking to pick up any missions any time soon -> switch those intel guys to recruitment. 3 or 4 guys in supply is all you need per haven for a while. When you notice a large deficit start to show, that's when you should entertain the advisor stuff. ....seriously, its way deeper than I thought. Havens that are cash cows one month may be dry as dirt the next. You have to keep watch of it. And pick your fights. If you're not looking for missions, THEN DONT LOOK FOR MISSIONS.
AWC additional skills make officers godlike. I only got a chance to really mess around in depth with a holo-targeting build for it, but good lord it was nasty. I can see the potential in other builds as well (assault/arc throwers, all-purpose technicals, and medic specialists seemed really solid) its just you absolutely need to have the proper gear to supplant your roster either way.
*Pro-tip, EVAC is directly influenced by your infiltration rate BUT its not just a one turn window to actually leave. You can hang around for a while... I was fucking around for 4 or 5 turns once. Not sure how long it actually lasts or if its there permanently, but you don't need to pull your hair out trying to land that perfect escape right as you deactivate a vault. I was getting myself shredded trying to line up perfect evacs. Don't be like me. Take your time and put that shit in the back corner of a map if you feel like it.
And fuck what you heard, kill farming is still worth it when you can. Kills are far from worthless. Shred those alien sons of bitches when you can.

By DY_nasty Go To PostFinally fished out a faceless by posting officers instead of typical noobs. Seemed to help a tonI got a gunner who works in the office
the faceless in your havens aren't even a concern
getting to the point where you can liberate a zone and get a proper headquarters though? my fucking god
you NEED a ghost shinobi just to press the fucking button

Just got out of a fatigue spiral in my LW1 campaign. Had like 7 UFOs in 5 days, plus the regular missions. Had to skip some of them since I just didn't have the people. Researching Alien Propulsion now so I can start getting Firestorms up so I can just blow them up instead of making them crash. Once my Elerium Generator finishes building I can build my Cybernetics Lab and my Psi Lab and start gearing up for base assaults to fuel my push to plasma.
By DY_nasty Go To PostUFO attack humbled the fuck out of me. Not sure I can play this game anymoreShinobi/Sharpshooter cheese didn't work?
By cdyhybrid Go To PostShinobi/Sharpshooter cheese didn't work? The wall of enemies is waaaaay larger than before. I got a bad roll on the map layout. Basically just ended up praying to my gunners and smoke grenades until I found a line of sight on it.
Even then, the beacon has 35 health now. You're in for some shit no matter how you play it.

I don't know how many times my ass has been saved by a gunner dash - command - area suppression combo.
