Vita shouldn't have failed (in NA)

I've been enjoying Trails of Cold Steel on my vita the last few weeks (nearing the 80 hr mark lol) and I'm reminded of how amazing this console is. It's just too bad that Sony's bad strategy doomed it in NA.
Was at Gamestop tonight looking for good deals (anything $10 and under) on physical games cos vita is being phased out everywhere and saw this baby in mint condition used sale for $140. Snagged it instantly.
The failure of this console hurts me more than even the Saturn or Dreamcast cos the hardware is so much better than the competition. I literally cannot play the 3DS for more than an hr or so cos the screen is trash and it's not comfortable to hold. Imagine if Sony had made just a few different decisions:
- $199 launch price (Maybe this could have been possible without the useless rear touch screen?)
- No greedy proprietary memory cards. This was a huge mistake
- More good, original titles at launch. The launch lineup was robust but it was littered with ports.
- Better quality control on some of the ports. Madden 13 was a disgrace as it was just 12. EA didn't even bother to change the stats and team records
I also think they (along with 3rd party devs) gave up way too quickly.
PS: It's amazing to me that they couldn't get an NBA 2K game on the console. It would been the first good handheld NBA game

Great hardware. Enjoyed playing PSX and PSP games on it.
It failed because no one bought it. No one bought it because no wants to play console games on a handheld with painful controls. I mean, we do, but the vast majority of the people playing games on the go do not.
I do think third parties didn't fully commit and that didn't help matters, but this was a losing proposition from day one.

Vita isn't painful to play (especially the slim version). The problem wasn't controls, it was a lack of compelling games that weren't ports. There are very few (if any) great games on vita that can't be played on other platforms. Lackluster first-party support and poor 3rd party support is what doomed it besides the relatively high cost of entry
Vita was and is an excellent platform and I share ops view that it really should have been managed better.

I had mean blisters from playing Freedom Wars and Toukiden on this thing.
I don't think it did fail completely . I'm pretty sure it's been consistently outperforming the ps4 in Japan. Which is why a good amount of ps4 titles coming out of Japan are being released cross platform on vita as well.(and if not that then ps3)
I just don't think there was ever a market for it in the us. While I think the 3ds sells as a kids toy, the vita tried to posture itself as a more mature alternative. And there's just no market for that over here. I don't think anything could have been done to change that.

That said I bought myself one last summer and I've been extremely satisfied with my purchase. I personally use it more than my ps4 and there are probably more vita games I'm looking forward to than on any other platform.
I agree it's an awesome system and I play mine almost every day. It didn't do nearly as well as the PSP, but I don't necessarily agree with the narrative that it's failed though. I live in Japan where the Vita is still alive and thriving. You see plenty of adults playing them on the trains. It still does well in the charts and produces hit games on the regular. It's going to keep going for years in Asia, and it's got enough of a library already, when you throw in PSN, to be played indefinitely.

Just talking NA. I'm quite encouraged by how it's doing in Japan. Hopefully we keep getting localizations :o

Not worried at all about the stuff I'm interested in. Localization studios are hungry for games that aren't obvious otaku bait. For the obvious good stuff I think it's more a matter of when than if.
