Just finished ep 5. Anything I tell you will be spoilery. I'll just say it's a refreshing take on this genre that's also full of mystery and great character interaction. I love it
AssClass is rather entertaining. Main character looks like a girl tho lol.
Korosensei design is brilliant though. I bet they rake it in off of his merch.

no such thing as an honorable death around this motherfucker
By cloudy Go To PostI started watching Erased (Boku dake ga Inai Machi) tonight. After one ep, I'm blown away. Now I have to stay up for 1 or 2 morebest this season (although that's not saying much), I'm really enjoying it. I've seen up to latest (ep 6) but I'm not sure I will watch any more until it's over, I really wanna binge it when it's done.
latest ibo episode was good tho
im about to catch up on IBO once it gets to like the last 2 eps of s1
not gonna lie shirobako kind of ruined how i look at anime. i notice the technical aspects of anime a lot more and it keeps me from liking shows sometimes.

Ajin and Grimgar are also good
Yea...Thunderbolt is kinda crazy. These dudes are killing and maiming other pilots to the sound of smooth jazz. Wolves in space.
IBO was dope again. It's better when it focuses on the group instead of all of the grand scale politics.

Playing catching since my laptop threw itself in the bushes. GATE ...I just can't help but watch. But that says more about me than the show TBH. Its like watching anime Empire.
Caught up on Grimgar. I like this show. It isn't great, but its legit.
About to run through IBO now.

Man...for a split second, I thought Orga might not have made it out of that room.
If this was any other show, you'd think you were watching villains at work. lol. I do like that Atra is the opposite of Mika. Breh has gone total demonic.

Yo for real. I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up giving Mika that Platoon ending. Leave that demon in Hell.

I already know I'm going to hate it, if Ein shows up in his new gundam and smokes Mika.
When does IBO pick up?
I've forced myself through the first 4 episodes but nothing about it is compelling to me.
I really want to watch it and to like it because I love gundam, but I can't see any remarkable qualities in the show.

By DY_nasty Go To PostI was sold on ep 4 or 5 I think.
I'll probably wait until it ends before giving it another shot. I doubt my problems with the show will change in an episode.
It just seems really bland to me. I can't really identify or empathize with the leads at all, the MS design is really indistinct and unmemorable and the setting just appears to be a loosely defined vehicle for introducing modern day issues into gundam, without really much to say about them beyond "they're bad".
I dunno. I think the show is stronger when it ignores the geopolitics' wider implications and runs less with the traditional gundam tropes. I feel like this particular gundam show is at it's best when the leads and the mob ties are in focus, and the political aspect is boiled down to "us vs them." I was sold from day 1, but if you don't like the leads at all, you probably won't later on either...especially where they are now. Still, I'd give it another chance.
I don't know if you've seen it, but Gundam Thunderbolt is definitely worth the watch. It's only two episodes in.
Dragonball Super is at a fun place. Frost is the best villain they have had since Cell.

By DY_nasty Go To PostI'm waiting to marathon it since the first ep. Hyped.Idk breh, I think with mystery/thriller shows sometimes it's more fun/better to watch week to week since it allows you to kick around theories and possibilities. Binging it at once you never get a chance to really sit on it and think.
Part of me wishes I would have done the same tho because I want it all but it's kinda cool to think about what will happen next and see theories. Now that the manga apparently ended I have to like completely avoid all talks of it...UNLESS they go a separate direction/ending

i hear that Vegeta is actually getting a good show this time around.

By DY_nasty Go To PostJust caught the ep. Mika is the most savage Gundam pilot ever. Fuck a fair one.
This dude has his own mobile suit shedding tears.
Merrebet's finally realizing she's in hell.
Going by the preview, I hope nothing happens to the Turbine pilots. :(
By domino Go To Posti hear that Vegeta is actually getting a good show this time around.
It seems like the writers don't actually hate him this time around. lol. There is still time for his usual jobbing out though.
Haven't seen the latest IBO but man, it really is inferior to pretty much every Gundam series I've seen. Shoddy artstyle, characters that don't connect, meh story. I'll keep watching but geez, I'm not the least bit excited to see what happens next. For all the shit Gundam SEED gets, the characters were compelling and memorable.
PS: AJIN is amazing. Must-see show of the season IMO

Saw this after my post above and I completely agree. Even 00 was much better than this

I kinda figured this would be the case. So I've been kind of ignoring it.
Just got the feeling that alot of the people watching and praising the show, are doing so for different reasons than I would be.
By cloudy Go To PostSaw this after my post above and I completely agree. Even 00 was much better than this
I actually think 00 S1 is the best Gundam TV series post Seed. lol
I've enjoyed that and G-Reco. but I'll concede the G-Reco overall is a bad show.
but yeah things have been pretty dire for the franchise lately. It's getting to the point where I think Gundam might just not be for me anymore.
I don't know how you could think that though. Especially of Seed. There might not even be new Gundam series today if Seed wasn't the grand slam for the franchise that it was at the time.
Not only did it bring in a completely new audience, but the franchise saw growth everywhere. Viewership, DVD sales, toy/model sales etc.
00 was also a pretty big hit for the franchise in those regards.
At the end of the day, as divisive as opinions are about both shows, people watched them. I think what worries me more than anything about the latest shows like G-Reco, and an surprisingly to an even greater extent, IBO, is that it doesn't seem like ANYONE is watching the shows. lol
Like I posted my opinion here because it seems like you guys are the only people I know actually watching it. and I'm apart of a few gundam groups.

I think the style of SEED was great for that particular generation of fans but you gotta admit - what's popular now has deviated from that a lot. I could be wrong, but IBO just seems much more attractive to a broader audience than 00 and SEED.
As a long time Gundam fan, IBO is obviously different. But in the same way that superman fans can be okay with Man of Steel, I can get down with it. Gritty nonsense is what the people want.

It might seem that way, but I think the reality is the show is just not doing well. From what I've heard, the show isn't doing much better than G-Reco, despite having a better timeslot and alot more promotion.
I actually think the opposite might be true, if you compare how well a show like Gundam Build Fighters did both domestically and overseas compared to IBO struggling to make a splash in either market.
I mean it's definitely how I feel anyways.

It really -doesn't- shock me that this run is doing around the sane numbers as reco. But overall I think people are downplaying word of mouth when it comes to anime. Gundam in particular is fighting off a lot of shit, trying to bring in new fans, and find a new happy medium to go forward with.
If any Gundam needed a toonami run, its this one.

That's not saying much lol. Everything post-SEED has been just okay or meh. I did like Destiny cos I love that universe though :p
but IBO just seems much more attractive to a broader audience than 00 and SEED.
Really? One-dimensional main characters and even shallower, forgettable side characters? I don't think anyone wants a show where you can barely remember anyone's name or what their motivations are. The mech battles aren't even that great either.
In SEED, when characters on either side died, you almost cried cos pretty much everyone was well developed. In IBO, you yawn cos you don't give a shit.
How hard is it to make characters viewers can feel attached too with an intersting plot and add in good music and art design? Tons of anime meet this threshold every season
I never saw gundam reconguista (I tuned out for a while after an ep of AGE) but the art seems like it's by whoever did Eureka Seven (my favorite anime ever) so I'm going to watch it now :p
Can someone post Suzuka and Major in the thread below? I think they are exactly what the OP wants

By DY_nasty Go To PostI hated the entire casts of SEED and 00 so shrugs here.
Same here. lol. Reasons that I didn't finish either series.

Eh..the IBO cast has been shown to have more going on under the surface. It's taken a little while longer than the other shows I guess (for certain characters), but they all have had cracks put on display. I guess the main draw for me, is that they aren't down playing the fact that they're child soldiers and not jrpg heroes sent by whatever deity and fated to kill the main "antagonists".

*daps*
Eureka Seven in my top 5. Love that show. Best gundam show made in the last 10 years lol
As for G-reco I think it's suited alot better to a consecutive watch rather than a weekly one. but yeah the biggest draw for me was the art and MS design.(I LOVE G-SELF)
Also Tomino still the best in the business at multi-faction space battles. Some really good scenes in there

You see that's what always confused me about the premise of IBO. It seemed to market itself as gundam trying to tackle the issue of child soldiers.....when gundam since its inception has mostly been about child soldiers.
IBO's problem is that instead of crafting its own unique circumstances for why children would be fighting in a war in a futuristic society, it instead sort of just mimics the circumstances they exist in today. and I think a byproduct of basing your series on real events, especially ones so recent, is that you can't really approach them with any nuance.
The show, at least very early on is very very very black and white. The people in charge of the protagonists are evil scumbags that hit kids and use them as decoys for their escape for seemingly no reason other than that they can, and the good guys are the people that have issues with fighting children soldiers or take care of them like responsible adults.
The show doesn't really touch on why they exist in this world, just that they do because that's "reality" and it sucks, and that people that treat them bad are bad while people that treat them good are good.
and it just all seems very weakly put together.
As for the leads, I wouldn't say they're one dimensional, at least any more than other Gundam protagonists, but I just can't really empathize with Mika at all. He's a sociopath who can't really think for himself, and it seems like the show portrays this as something admirable at times. Especially when he interacts with Kudelia. Her idealism is completely dismantled as childish naivete while Mika's cold nihilism is propped up as being "how the real world is".
Maybe given a few more episodes Mika would have become something more compelling, but at the point I watched up to I just felt like I was watching Black Lagoon again. These are crazy characters in pitiable circumstances and the show isn't interested in the slightest in framing them as such. They're just played straight as cool, capable characters as they engage in animated violence.
Mika is a PTSD poster boy right now and Orga can barely function on top of running a revenge fueled blood mob.
Yea, I hear you and by no means am I trying to sway you on this, but IBO really hasn't been portrayed as black and white for a while now, especially after the last handful of episodes.
Mika isn't really there to be emphasized with: the younger kids are (Orga too). He's a "kid" whom is consumed by ptsd and ultimately uses a promise as flimsy ass excuse to kill anyone he views as a threat, instead of dealing with his demons. He's never had someone to give him clarity, the way Biscuit did to Orga. He's a gun that has sentience. He's Heero times 3 without the ability to think for himself. He's barely an anti-hero.
At that point in the story, nobody should have given Kudelia the time of day...ever. Her own handler thought she was ridiculous, becuase her movement was based on childish naivete. Now, she actually has some agency and done things worthy of the respect of everyone, included the political players.
Orga is a mess, as DY stated. The list goes on.
Show isn't flawless and there is definitely enough time for the 2nd season curse to strike (the rest of this season for a 2nd time for that matter), but eh.
edit: The more I think about it, this show almost feels tailored made for people who either stopped watching Gundam, or don't care about it to begin with.
