I'm a big JJ Abrams fan so I'm sure Episode 7 is great but I didn't want to jump in without seeing the first 2 trilogies.
I've been watching in release order and just finished Attack of the Clones (one more to go!) Just wanted to share some impressions:
- I can see why the first trilogy was so popular. Watching it, it's hard to believe this was done in the 70s (the blue ray looks fantastic and only the crappy muppet aliens give it away)
- I feel this is one of those nostalgia-fueled things. While enjoyable, I just don't find the characters or story-telling very compelling (especially in the older movies). I don't doubt that I'd be a total fanboy if I'd watched them in the 80s though!
- 2 movies in, I prefer the prequels to the original trilogy and it's not close. More badass Jedi action and Natalie Portman is just so fahn <3
- While the story and a lot of the character motivations aren't compelling to me, I really think they did a great job of linking the trilogies. I wouldn't recommend Machete order cos I think knowing things before-hand helps the viewer appreciate the prequels more. I mean, Phantom Menace would have been really boring to me if I hadn't watched the original trilogy. Instead, I was quite interested.
More thoughts after I watch Revenge of the Sith :)

I am a prequel trilogy defender, but find it interesting that you prefer them over the OT.
You are right that you need to have seen the OT to really make sense of the PT.

I'd imagine anyone new to the series who watched it in release order would have the same opinion. For example, I love The Goonies but I'm self-aware enough to know a lot of it's appeal to me is nostalgic
I completely get cloudy liking the prequels over the original trilogy. I mean, it just kinda makes sense going off of what he likes.
The prequels were.... aite. Sorta.

The prequels have TONS of great ideas in them, and round out the Star Wars universe in some very interesting ways. They definitely don't get enough credit for this.
However, the execution was pretty much horrendous. Lucas' dialogue is atrocious and he has no skill whatsoever for coaxing quality performances out of his actors. He also botched the casting for the prequels' central character (both child and adult), abandoned location shooting and quality set design for lousy CGI backdrops, centered the trilogy on a romance that doesn't make a lick of sense and isn't remotely convincing, and began the trilogy with a confusing conflict that probably would have been better used as background information instead of the focus of an entire film. And Jar Jar, of course.
I'm fine with the prequels' reputation getting a bit of a boost, because I think they deserve it to some degree, but I don't think they should ever be considered quality films, save for perhaps ROTS.

There's zero feeling in the Prequels. More passion packed in "How ya doing ya old pirate!" Than the entirety of the PT

Enjoying them more doesn't mean I consider them quality films.
I do find it interesting that the new films are panned for dialogue and poor acting since the old ones have the exact SAME problem. They were just so ground-breaking for their time that those flaws were overlooked.
I wouldn't consider any of the 5 movies I've seen to be a "quality" film...

Empire Strikes Back is quality film-making by any metric.
By cloudy Go To PostEnjoying them more doesn't mean I consider them quality films. The dialogue in the prequels is worse than the dialogue in the original trilogy. Far worse.

There are certainly a fair number of corny lines in IV-VI, but there's nothing in the same league of godawfulness as the Anakin/Padme garbage in II and III. That stuff is just painful and far beyond anything in the original trilogy.
It's not just that the dialog in the prequels is worse as written, but it's so bad that even any of the good actors were flat out incapable of making it sound digestible to an audience.
What makes the original trilogy better is that it's focused in its execution. Even the worst bit (... Ewoks) aren't still as big of a mess as the biggest executed ideas in the prequels.

The fact that someone could find the prequels better than the original trilogy before watching ROTS kind of boggles my mind.
I mean, I can at least somewhat understand someone saying this after ROTS, considering it's a surprisingly solid conclusion to an otherwise poor trilogy of films, but thinking the prequels are better having only seen I and II? That's just...wow.

Yea... Episode II is literally some of the worst film making you could imagine. Like, Samuel L Jackson can't even keep a straight face any time he says Count Dooku, and that dude acted with a straight face the entire time in Snakes on a Plane.

omg, I forgot how bad the CGI was. Like, they can't even be in a normal room without it being green screen and it shows.

And, really, the acting is far better in the original movies. Mark Hamill isn't an awesome actor, but god damn it if he isn't far better and way more endearing than the acting in the prequels. Christiansen is so wooden and his delivery so stilted. Dude just can't act. So I just can't agree with that, even if I want to say, the material wasn't awesome in either instance. (I don't think that's true, either. The scripts for the original movies are far more solid. They sound way more like people.)
The charm and interaction between Solo and Leia alone is tiers ahead of what we saw in the prequels.

It's kind of staggering that the same guy can write the Han and Leia romance and then the Padme and Anakin ... thing. It's not believable in the slightest, they have zero chemistry, they say the most insane things to each other, in what I guess is supposed to be the courting process. What happened.

Anakin: Don't be afraid.
Padme: I'm not afraid to die. I've been dying a little bit each day since you came back into my life.
Anakin: What are you talking about?
Padme: I love you.
Anakin: You love me? I thought we had decided not to fall in love. That we'd be forced to live a lie and that it would destroy our lives.
Padme: I think our lives are about to be destroyed anyway. I truly... deeply... love you and before we die I want you to know.
Padme: It has been far too long, Master Kenobi. Ani? My goodness you've grown.Like, I mean. Come on. COME ON.
Anakin: So have you. Grown more beautiful, I mean. Well, for a Senator I mean.
Goddammit Konex. Your thread is upsetting me now.
Where Lucas truly fails as a writer is any sort of dialogue that requires deep human emotion - especially love. A New Hope didn't really feature much of that stuff (Leia and Han's romance hasn't built to much of anything yet and Luke's affection toward Obi-wan isn't particularly deep), so Lucas' weaknesses as a writer weren't as evident in the first film. (Also, by all accounts ANH was saved from being a disaster thanks to god-tier editing.)
And also remember that "I know" was a Harrison Ford imrpov line, so he gets credit for that particular bit of brilliance - not Lucas or Kasdan or anyone else.

By reilo Go To PostWas that really an improv line? Bless you, Han Solo.Yep.
Han's scripted line was, "I love you, too," but Ford didn't think it worked, so Kershner told him to wing it.
My biggest issue with the prequels was the overuse of CGI. None of the CGI has held up, and when it was fresh it seemed so out of place after having binge watched 4,5 and 6 prior to my viewings. The bad dialog was just the straw for me. That being said, I enjoyed parts of each episode in the prequels. Darth Maul was a bad ass and the light saber fights with him were too. Episode III had some ups.
The CGI was so unnecessary in the most of simple scenes, too. Why, why, WHY is an entire room just CG instead of a good ol' well designed room? It stands out. You can see the bad blending in the most of simple dialog scenes. Characters didn't even sit in real chairs, ffs.
I haven't see the new movie yet, I want to try and go this week. One of the things I loved hearing about prior to it's release was the abandonment of massive CGI and a return to some set pieces, models and puppets.
It irritated me so much the the tech looked years beyond the OT when I was supposed to be viewing a prequel. I want fucking X-Wings damnit.

my gripe with the prequels is everything except the music and the very basic outline of Episode 3's plot. The acting, the bad CGI sets and characters, the bad humor, the bad romance, the unnecessary connections that just create very big plotholes in the orignal prequels, its infuriating.
Lucas being limited by CG technology gave the OT a charm and warmth that practically was ruined by a cold and sterile world of the prequels.

Revenge of the Sith was the best of all 6 movies IMO. It had the most emotional impact plus great action and plot points. I'm pretty hyped for Force Awakens now.

Empire and Revenge are the only ones I think are actually good. If I never see the other 4 again I wouldnt miss them that much aside from the odd scene here and there.

I...I killed them. I killed them all. They're dead, every single one of them. And not just the men, but the women and the children too.
I would say the ranking comes down to
5 - 4 - 3 - 6 - 2 - 1 in that order.
Funny thing is jedi aren't supposed to be kung-fu masters almost everything was ripped from Japanese bushido... even the word Jedi... comes from Jidaigeki 時代劇

All of the prequels were just mind numbingly stupid from a convoluted plot that was actually simple to a shitty ass romance with an abusive boyfriend/hubby. The fact that she actually marries the dude after he talks of slaughtering families and genocide of an entire people is lol, no warning signs there.
