Driven to Kill: Why drivers in China intentionally kill the pedestrians they hit.

Don't read this if you are easily disturbed, the stories in this report are gutwrenching.
In April a BMW racing through a fruit market in Foshan in China’s Guangdong province knocked down a 2-year-old girl and rolled over her head. As the girl’s grandmother shouted, “Stop! You’ve hit a child!” the BMW’s driver paused, then switched into reverse and backed up over the girl. The woman at the wheel drove forward once more, crushing the girl for a third time. When she finally got out from the BMW, the unlicensed driver immediately offered the horrified family a deal: “Don’t say that I was driving the car,” she said. “Say it was my husband. We can give you money.”
“Double-hit cases” have been around for decades. I first heard of the “hit-to-kill” phenomenon in Taiwan in the mid-1990s when I was working there as an English teacher. A fellow teacher would drive us to classes. After one near-miss of a motorcyclist, he said, “If I hit someone, I’ll hit him again and make sure he’s dead.” Enjoying my shock, he explained that in Taiwan, if you cripple a man, you pay for the injured person’s care for a lifetime. But if you kill the person, you “only have to pay once, like a burial fee.” He insisted he was serious—and that this was common.
Here too, the driver was charged only with accidentally causing a person’s death. (He claimed to have confused the boy with a cardboard box or trash bag.) Police rejected charges of murder and even of fleeing the scene of the crime, ignoring the fact that the driver ran over the boy’s head as he sped away.http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/foreigners/2015/09/why_drivers_in_china_intentionally_kill_the_pedestrians_they_hit_china_s.single.html
These drivers are willing to kill not only because it is cheaper, but also because they expect to escape murder charges. In the days before video cameras became widespread, it was rare to have evidence that a driver hit the victim twice. Even in today’s age of cellphone cameras, drivers seem confident that they can either bribe local officials or hire a lawyer to evade murder charges.
Apparently a conscience doesn't exist in China.
That being said, saw a hit and run while working today, dude totally got away.

So pay the poor family, bribe officials or get a high-rate lawyer. Screw these rich fuckers. Inequality and corruption in China going hand in hand...
This is the best evidence possible for the "People are dickheads who care less about strangers' welfare than their money." assumption.
People who run over family members, multiple times to ensure they're dead, and then want to simply pay off families for such a cruel and heinous act need to be stashed away in prison for life. The world doesn't need more sociopaths running around it needs less. Also the system really needs to be looked into if you're basically walking away free from any punishment or financial burden for killing a human being.
They really need to change a system that basically incentivizes this sort of thing. but from what it looks like even law enforcement and policy makers are aware that this occurs and go so far as to facilitate it.
I wonder if this is a byproduct of China's population issues. Conditioned to think one less person is almost a desirable outcome so long as it isn't you or your loved ones.

Strolled over to this section of Slaent and now I'm more informed...and super depressed. Geez I feel sick.
Yeah, they will try to kill you for no reason. Crossing the street is always a gamble... always. God forbid it's rush hour. It's made worse by the fact that intersections are needlessly long. I crunched the numbers and one intersection was like four intersections where I live.
We got them back by throwing firecrackers into the middle of traffic. Apparently my rich friends were out of fucks to give.
