Sony Altered ‘Concussion’ Film to Prevent N.F.L. Protests
- Page 1 of 1
When Sony Pictures Entertainment decided to make a movie focusing on the death and dementia professional football players have endured from repeated hits to the head — and the N.F.L.’s efforts toward a cover-up — it signed Will Smith to star as one of the first scientists to disclose the problem. It named the film bluntly, “Concussion.”
In the end even Sony, which unlike most other major studios in Hollywood has no significant business ties to the N.F.L., found itself softening some points it might have made against the multibillion-dollar sports enterprise that controls the nation’s most-watched game.
In dozens of studio emails unearthed by hackers, Sony executives; the director, Peter Landesman; and representatives of Mr. Smith discussed how to avoid antagonizing the N.F.L. by altering the script and marketing the film more as a whistle-blower story, rather than a condemnation of football or the league.
“We’ll develop messaging with the help of N.F.L. consultant to ensure that we are telling a dramatic story and not kicking the hornet’s nest.”http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/02/sports/football/makers-of-sonys-concussion-film-tried-to-avoid-angering-nfl-emails-show.html?_r=0
Sony will stand up to Kim Jong Un, but not to Roger Goodell. Amazing.

Btw, this is the doctor that Will Smith is portraying:
My old neurologist was the former neurologist for the the New York Jets in the 90s and 2000s. He published a lot of studies and theories saying the same thing and the NFL forced him out. He even made headlines in the news for his remarks being 'outlandish'.
He's probably having the last laugh now.

and 15 years later it's still being covered up. Even by companies with no business ties to the NFL.
Even a company as large as Sony is afraid of burning that bridge and bringing this issue to light.

A genuine doctor would be pretty disturbed and depressed by the whole ordeal. Hell I'm not a doc and I still am.
I saw the documentary PBS did a few years back with that doc. The things NFL tried to do to discredit him are amazing. And by that I mean sickening.

He doesn't practice sports medicine for that reason anymore. The NFL is shady as fuuuuck. I think the NHL wanted him at one point, and he rejected them.
And of course he isn't laughing, that's just a figure of speech. But I wouldn't be surprised if he's at any point reflected on his past humiliation at the hands of the NFL and feels vindicated to at least some extent.
Much as I like watching them, watching players and even like some players as people, the whole sports venture is about profit. There isn't profit in being honest about the physical drawbacks. Where it really disturbs me is just how young it starts, because those kids really don't have a grasp on just what being a meat grinder for money is really.
