I don't know... just about every track screams California to me without being stuck using Zapp samples or anything else west coast related of 15 years ago.
How I hear the album and how I read the Dre quotes that was the inspiration... that's what makes it coherent... no matter where you are in the world you should see smog and palm trees when you listen to it.

By vire Go To PostSome fucking bullshit that I can't listen to this on Spotify.
coming out on CD the 21st... but after his deal with Apple did you expect something else?
Eh it just says a lot about Dre at this point. Dude is a business man, not an artist.
After a fifteen year gap in between his last album... he doesn't drop Detox, hell no, he drops a soundtrack as a movie tie that was announced on his Beats One radio show exclusively for Apple iTunes.
For real? I'm not hating on the quality of the album since I haven't heard it yet, but the whole thing just feels a little gross.

I dgaf about how 'slimey' his moves may seem, he didn't mention appl eor beats by dre directly which is way more than I could ask for.
Either way, the album is fire.

To be honest Detox was sounding lost...
from NWA to 2001 he rapped about getting money and being the top of the world. Now that he pretty much is it feels gross?
the album is fire ane he is making moves that make sense. It sucks that the only digital format is Apple... but ┐(´д`)┌

By reilo Go To PostStill not as good as Yeezus though, right Pitchfork?
You made me check the website. What the hell? 808s & Heartbreak is a 7.6 while My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a 10?
Also, how fucked up is it to have such a precise grade on art? Ugh. Gross.

10 for MBDTF is too low.
By blackace Go To Postloloh wait you are serious?
Dead serious, bruh.

Kid Cudi's Man on the Moon is a 4.1. It's old news to all I'm guessing, but now I know why I never checked Pitchfork.
I love mbdtf and Yeezus. The arbitrarily precise point system has always been goofy but generally I think they get it right more than they get it wrong.
I love MBDTF but Yeezus is just... lyrically it's pretty terrible. And the production is kinda all over the place.
I do know one thing that is missing from the album, and there's unfortunately nothing that can be done about it: a Nate Dogg hook.

Album is okay. Like a few tracks but doesn't really do much for me otherwise.
TPAB is still the reigning AOTY. Easily.
Speaking of Yeezuz. I think it's great. Might be my favorite Kanye album tbh.

By blackace Go To PostLet's focus on the good (Compton) and not the bad (MBDTF) or the ugly (Yeezus)
Crazy talk. MBDTF and Yeezus are dope ass records.
So is Compton.
Maybe if someone took the production off of Yeezus and added some better lyrics and rapping skills to it, then, yea? Kanye needs a ghostwriter.
Dre just dropped an album after a decade plus wait and here we are arguing about MBDTF vs. Yeezus.
smfh.

It's been almost two months now, enough time to process the album. I was re-watching the up in smoke tour the other day, and I thought a couple things:
- anecdotal now, but Eminem's solo part is easily the worst of the concert.
- relating to this last album, nothing on it comes close to Let me ride, Still Dre, etc. I mean it's a great listen, it feels sophisticated as a whole, but not a culture-defining classic. I was 15 when the Chronic 2001 came out and it was so impactful, I remember playing ball outside with someone bumping the song next to the court. It's not that it was my favorite ever, not at all actually, I preferred Outkast and the Wu, but collectively, with the other teenagers, Dre's music was the discussion. And it can't be the case with that last album. What's the equivalent today? Drake's stuff? Ugh. Dre's last album is definitely for thirtysomethings and hip Brooklyn-types, it's less youth fantasy-driven.
