It's not bad, some good stuff scattered about. Gonna need a few more listens.
yeah the best thing about this is the production, otherwise it's not too special. kendrick was cool, and I liked hearing Xzibit after a while, but yeah this shit is just ok
By Moris Go To PostDr. Dre is a pretty good producer huh? That's kinda how he made a name for himself.
It's a good album.

Pac thought so too he just didn't really like him
Good production, but not as fun/playful as Dre's beats usually are.
Forgettable raps except from the heavy hitters like Snoop and Kendrick.

I really liked the verses from Game, Mez and Jon Connor, whoever wrote Dre's raps was on point too. I really don't dislike any verse off the top of my head.
Enjoying more on subsequent listens.

Women been saying he's fun to give head to, can you confirm?

Drake has taken his share, wouldn't even say washed up Common's name, or Pusha's and Still hasn't even Said Meek Mill's name which is strange.
I've listened twice now and the tracks that held my attention and seem to have lasting appeal are:
Loose Cannons
Deep Water
For The Love of Money
Animals
Medicine Man
Talking To My Diary
So the album finishes pretty strong, it's just not something that's going to have legs in the long run for me personally.

This is why rap beefs these days bore the shit out of me. The Drake/Meek Mill shit was entertaining, but if it's not grown men bitching at each other on twitter then it's a just ambiguous enough "diss" that they can deny it, no one's willing to call anyone else's name out, and when they get asked about it in interviews the answers are always the same pussyfooting "Well at the end of the day it's all good it's all competiton blabbity blah blah blah".
Also I haven't really listened to Compton yet, a coworker was playing it yesterday but what I heard sounded alright. The production feels kinda bombastic and noisy which isn't really Dre's strong suit, but the beats definitely knock in the way that Dre beats are supposed to.
I would have liked some Hittman/Kurupt/Lady of Rage somewhere on this album. Some more Snoop on the front end too.
Good to know the cracker factory hasn't forgotten about Dre.

Why? for nostalgia's sake? He's outclassed by about every other rapper on the record...
It's still good after repeat listens. It's the most sonically dense thing he's done since The Chronic. The back half of the album is especially strong.
Liked this a lot.
Kendrick Lamar killed it as usual. Not usually a fan of BJ The Chicago Kid but enjoyed him in this.
It's definitely going to get better with each listen.

The DJ Premier track is definitely the best beat of the album. Throughout the album, it sounds like Dre is trying to do too much, it is very instrumental but it's just so busy... Too much to prove, the whole thing sounds... ostentatious. "Animals" is slightly more minimalistic and it works better.
But yeah, the highlight I look forward to at every listen is Kendrick coming in on Deep Water. So sick.

I don't agree with this at all.. I been playing with the album on a DJ level and it blends pretty easily with his older works on a whole... a few songs are "busy" but generally sounds very Dre
My issue is not that he's doing something different at all, nor is it that it lacks coherence with previous work. I'm not nostalgic, I'm not saying he should be campy. It takes from all genres but it's not formulaic, yet this is still definitely more hiphop than all the fusion that's trending in a market largely driven by pop-R&B listeners. My only criticism has to do with the album itself and nothing else. There's no sense of direction. I think it's a very good album, but it's a crazy patchwork. If this was a book I was reading, I would feel like the writer is trying to be impressive a bit too much, and would need a bit more focus. The changes of mood are drastic, and happen every minute at some point. For instance, Darkside Gone, there are 4 tracks within one there, and I don't know what story this is telling, except for the fact that Dre wants to show off. It's all a matter of patterns right, and sometimes it's like, Dre is doing a cartwheel, then juggling, then playing soccer, then flexing...
Beat switch-ups are becoming more and more common.
Chronic and 2001 felt like they were steering the genre in new directions whereas Compton looks to bookend the modern sound by attempting to perfect it. If it does or not is a matter of opinion of course, but I'm really liking it.

Yeah, I'm really enjoying it. I wasn't expecting a consistent sound that flows like a waterfall from Track A to Z like say, GKMC, but this album is thoroughly enjoyable even if lacking a consistent theme. It's really an album about Dr. Dre as a producer rather than Dr. Dre as a storyteller and I look at it more as a compilation album.
