By kamorra Go To PostThe Italian word Mafia specifically and only refers to the sicilian Cosa Nostra. I think as an Southern Italian, actually being born there I know a bit about that. Beside that, this series was always about the "original" Mafia. Tell me with a straight face that a new Yakuza game starring an Italian fighting against the Yakuza wouldn't be a bit weird.
Yakuza 4, you play as a half-Taiwanese detective working against the Yakuza--Masayoshi Tanimura. seen here
It wasn't weird in the slightest considering the context of the story.

I just want my Mafia sequel about Mafia.
But it is about the Mafia.
By Silky Go To PostBut it is about the Mafia.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSSjDpDxurU
Do we have to go back to semantics again
There will be Italian mob in the game
You will be a survivor of black mob
You will fight Italian mob for revenge
Is my point not clear enough yet
Should I repeat
Yeah, about Andy García in Godfather III? I'm pretty sure some of the funnier parts of the internet would call that cultural appropriation.
By Ricky Go To PostIt's like talking to a wall, if you need to hear that you're right about what I want ok, you know better.
You're the one conflating mafia with Italian mafia, that's on you.
There is no other Mafia than the Sicilian Mafia. Even all the other criminal organizations in Italy aren't called Mafia.
By Silky Go To PostYakuza 4, you play as a half-Taiwanese detective working against the Yakuza--Masayoshi Tanimura. seen hereOf course it wasn't weird. He plays only a small part compared to the Yakuza guy doing Yakuza things for the Yakuza. He also doesn't try to take down the Yakuza, he tries to solve a murder.

Again I just don't like "take the Mafia down" setting. For me, it doesn't fit the series.

It's almost like some words evolve and change over time.
By Moris Go To PostIt's almost like some words evolve and change over time.Well, then there is nothing more to say. Fuck my own language.
Honestly, just saying you'd prefer to play as a member of the Italian mafia wouldn't have been met with as much eye rolling if you didn't try to reason it out in ways that didn't make sense.

While arguing that the italian mafia was the mafia.
By kamorra Go To PostThere is no other Mafia than the Sicilian Mafia. Even all the other criminal organizations in Italy aren't called Mafia.
but the word mafia in English means organized crime.
By blackace Go To Postbut the word mafia in English means organized crime. Not even you dictionary agrees with you there but tbh I don't understand why we two have to do this again. You get my point. You understood what my problem was. Now we're on GAF level pile on mode. All my arguments why I want to work for and not against the Mafia in that game are shit because my definition of an Italian word being an actual fucking Italian is obviously wrong 'cause we're talking English here and words change all the time man, I also didn't repeated enough times that the only problem I have is playing against the Mafia. Therefore the only logical conclusion is that I'm a Racist hating the game because the main character is black and let's be honest, from a US pov it makes sense. I mean, fuck, even your left is racist.
Yeah, I'm having a small scale meltdown right now. But pretty please, just for a second don't assume that I'm a horrible Racist. How in the world could I not have one?
Of course having a meltdown is a red flag too, I mean, why wouldn't I have one if didn't want to hide some dirty secret?

don't know about that partner
an organized international body of criminals, operating originally in Sicily and now especially in Italy and the US and having a complex and ruthless behavioural code.
any organized group of criminals resembling the Mafia in its way of operating.
noun: mafia; plural noun: mafias
"the rise of criminal mafias in Russian and Eastern Europe"
a group regarded as exerting a hidden sinister influence.
noun: mafia
"the British literary mafia"
I'm confused, the game is following a guy in the black mob taking on the mafia. It's not like they're rewriting history. Are some of you mad because it's framed from the POV of a guy who's not in the Italian Mafia?
I mean, it'd be outrageous if the title of the game was "Mobster for the Mafia" or "Mafioso" but it's not. It's just Mafia.

That's what it seems like it boils down to, couple people are for some reason hung up over a word not meaning what they thought it did.
By blackace Go To Postdon't know about that partner
Hey compadre, I paste the whole thing ok?
(the Mafia)
[TREATED AS SINGULAR OR PLURAL] An organized international body of criminals, operating originally in Sicily and now especially in Italy and the US and having a complex and ruthless behavioural code.

I just assume it was a cut & paste mistake. Since words sometimes have important meaning and sometimes don't I might very well be wrong again. Either way I'm out. There is nothing good to gain here anymore.

If you believe that's the problem why making such a fuss about people not liking it? We know that this not what you think "these" people have a problem with. You apparently know your Italian better than me.

From the link you posted:
The term was originally applied to the Sicilian Mafia, but has since expanded to encompass other organizations of similar methods and purpose, e.g. "the Russian Mafia", "the Japanese Mafia", "the Albanian Mafia" or "Maltese Mafia".
You should let this go, its a dumb argument. The title could be 'Mafia' and be about a cop Protag taking down the irish mob. There's no reason to drag a semantics argument into this, especially one that clearly does not back up your complaint.
You don't have to twist yourself into knots cause you like the Italian variation of organized crime stories that romanticizes crime. Preferring to play as the Italian Mob is well and good, just say that.
You really don't need to try to reason it out or make false equivalencies like Ricky did. It's not a good look.

lol if their is only an Italian mafia why can it be treated as plural in English? is there various Italian mafias?

pretty much every source in English says mafia started as Sicilian mafia but now can mean various crime syndicates
Either way it doesn't really matter. The assumption that the protag has to be of the group named in a title is weird.

In the previous two games you fight against the mafia as the mafia. I don't suppose that distinction matters though.

The first thing you said in this thread was that there was only one mafia. You're being dishonest about your contributions in here.
The world won't end if you admit you were wrong.
By Moris Go To PostThe first thing you said in this thread was that there was only one mafia. You're being dishonest about your contributions in here.I'm Italian. Mafia is a Italian word and is used only for the Sicilian Mafia. Keep in mind this is my language. I come in this thread and state that I would rather play as somone working for the Mafia in a game called Mafia. I specifically didn't even mention that the protag needs to be Italian. I would totally be ok with the new one if he would work for the Mafia. This is actually hard to believe according to this thread.

People immediately assume that I have to be a Racist and try to explain to me for some reason how Americans use the Italian word Mafia. Tbh I care very little about how you bastardize words from other languages.
But yeah, I admit that I mentioned in my very first post in this thread that according to the origin of the word there is only one organisation called Mafia. Now what? Is the main point I had now acceptable? Can we stop this now?

The series has taken place in fictional America and now New Orleans, within that context your complaint doesn't make any sense because it has always been playing by the 'bastardized' version of the word mafia, it just so happened to be in line with your use up until this point.
The closest anyone came to saying you were racist was the crankiest man on the internet Jay, who said:
I don't know that you're racist. I'm just betting that a lot of the people who are making your argument are.
It's not so much that his ridiculously obtuse argument here makes me think he's racist. It's a dozen other suspect comments he's made on NeoGAF before yesterday that made me think it. I had him on ignore for it and that's how I remembered his name when he came here.
But then I reminded myself: #CLEANSLATE. So, I backed off.
