By Morzingis Go To PostWonder what their contract with Sony looks like cause even if this hits like 10 mil, that ain't gonna cut it unless they do it in the style of a Dreamcast game.lol original Shenmue had a $47mil development budget , which is like $90mil today:
“From the beginning, the new title without using Akira would be more acceptable,” he said, so they went in a different direction. According to Suzuki, the $70 million Sega said it cost was an embellishment. It was "only $47 million," he said. "Well, maybe I shouldn't say only," he joked.http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/33329/GDC_2011_Yu_Suzuki_Sega_Will_Probably_Let_Me_Make_Shenmue_3.php
But then you got stuff like Heavy Rain that cost $25mil or so.
By Morzingis Go To PostWonder what their contract with Sony looks like cause even if this hits like 10 mil, that ain't gonna cut it unless they do it in the style of a Dreamcast game.I'm totally down for making Shenmue III using the same old engine and same assets from the Dreamcast games.
Maybe use the Passport models or something, but I'm totally down for that. They'd save a bunch of money on that and use it for more content.
Looks better than that shit video they made in someone's basement to announce the game. Art style is awful.

By rvy Go To PostNo, that's incorrect. The entire thing had that budget. This includes the prototype for Saturn, Shenmue and Shenmue II.Either way, that's far more money than the Kickstarter is looking for (especially in 2015 USD), so the question still remains how much Sony is throwing in.
Would be super interesting if they go the 'dreamcast look' route, would likely cut the budget down significantly versus trying to modernize the game. This kickstarter and everything is cool, but sales once it's released will show true interest.
Maybe use this as proof that a fully realized current gen Shenmue 4 is viable, would be a nice way to finish the story.

Seems like they've got more investors than just Sony though.
I don't think the game will cost that must because I don't think there's anyway they're making the same kind of game as Shenmue 1 and 2 in 2015. Especially if they're compartmentalizing things like quests and minigames behind stretch goals, because those are the things that made the experience in the first games.
It was basically a fully voiced slice of life JRPG with a Virtua Fighter beat em up boss fights maybe 3-4 times in the enitre game. No waaaaaaaaaaaaaay they're making one of those in today's market.

I don't know, this quote makes it sound ambitious to an extent:
"’d always been thinking about how to make Shenmue III,” he told me. “To make an open world game like that you need to have a certain budget to produce it. The question of how to raise the money was always on my mind. And then a few years ago, I learned of Kickstarter and found some fans who knew how to run Kickstarter campaigns. With that and other funding I had procured through my company, the realization that Shenmue III could actually happen is really just hitting me now."
The costs just aren't comparable.
Simply because the scale and everything was something new back in the day.
These days even smaller indie studios create open world games with UE4 that look phenomenal and with a pretty small budget.
So I doubt it's gonna be that expensive.

If Sony was the only one in play then it'd be PS4 exclusive.
I don't get the hype lads
I never owned the Dreamcast because it was a failure of a system
Didn't the games sell like ass?

I think the first Shenmue sold like 1 million and the 2 less than 500k.
For the budget, it was a massive fail.
