It’s a great shame that all the followers in Skyrim are so dull compared to Serana. Bethesda really went backwards in that regard going from Fallout 3 to Skyrim. Fallout 3 really had some interesting characters for followers with whole backstories, if I recall they were all essential too.
Skyrim on the other hand, only a handful are essential and the majority of them are bland mercenaries or housecarls.
