By Perfect Blue Go To PostI played Horizon right after BOTW and holy shit was that some of the biggest whiplash I've felt in a game. Tapped out in an hour.Correct.

Me too. Getting around the world in HZD felt like such a chore to the point where I dropped it real quick too. I feel like they've patched in a LOT of quick travel spots and other such changes since launch though.
edit: they haven't, it appears. Idk. Maybe my standards have lowered in the recent lull of vidya releases.
"Horizon Zero Dawn has the best combat of any open world game"
not even as good as Tsushima, sorry. Or Halo Infinite.

As for the story - I thought it was good - keeps your attention - the world is actually far more interesting conceptually than at face value.
Combat against machines is peerless and challenging - requires some strategy - You need to set traps, use the focus on the enemies to find their elemental weaknesses and plan accordingly.
You're a teenage girl, not Kratos, one swipe of a thunderjaw's tail and you're paste against the mountainside.
just my opinion though.
EDIT - also, visit Cauldrons to allow you to override other machines to fight for you - switches things up.
By s y Go To Postim skipping through it as fast as I can but it's wild how the VA and line delivery in Genshin Impact, a F2P game is leagues better than FF7Rtru
By Hixx Go To PostPlaying through Horizon Zero Dawn (story mode, not got time to be fannying about with the mediocre combat) and, considering how many people say this game has a really good story⦠it doesn't. It could have been but some of the writing is distractingly bad. Last few missions have just been a huge exposition dump (really poorly done as well, the amount of dialogue that plays on top of other dialogue or cuts out as you move through the levels is amateurish) and the amount of times I've like⦠actually grimaced at some of the dialogue is crackers. Kept going because I did really want to see what was going on, then it got there and while it was fairly interesting, I hated how it was presented.i don't think horizon had a good story, it had a good moment and setting. the story and characters are all kinda..... unremarkable
But man, for a five year old game it's still absolutely stunning. Apart from the humans. Everything else is absolutely beautiful and then all the humans look weird as fuck. Might play the sequel just to look at it, oh yeah. Hopefully that game will be more "don't just look at it, eat it" than this one.
combat is great only on higher difficulties. another game that suffered because it was too easy and didn't encourage players to explore all the possible options. you can go the entire game without using traps, environmental effects, or shooting specific canisters to proc things, etc. and that's really fucked up
By Tony Hank's Pro Skater Go To PostThis reminds me I should finish the Sushi DLC at some point.its mid as fuck you're not missing anything.

tsushima? scust begone troglodyte
Just had a quick check for you big boi. Played the game at launch where afaik there was no story mode difficulty. 9 hours there, which is a lot more than I thought. Think 9 hours is a fair representation of any game, and the combat in HZD is not very good, sorry. So yeah, I will skip it thank you very much Mr. Guerrilla Games.
By DY_nasty Go To PosttruEvery time someone praises HZD's story I always wonder if I played a different version.

You can do some really cool stuff in HZD but why when you can just spam dodge button and fling 180 arrows a minute
By DY_nasty Go To PostYou can do some really cool stuff in HZD but why when you can just spam dodge button and fling 180 arrows a minuteI donβt care for HZD at all but this sentiment is indeed such a shame. This is the fault of the game designers in not creating compelling combat encounters that make you use all of the gameplay systems at your disposal. Iβd definitely chalk it up to people wanting easier games.
Which makes it even funnier when you check the trophy lists of popular titles and vast majority of people donβt complete these games anyway

best compromise is to just have completely customizable, modular difficulty like tlou2.
it's impossible to create perfectly designed, compelling and balanced gameplay across multiple difficulties especially with titles that involve resource management. It's yet to be done in games with single difficulties. too easy to blame it on people wanting easier games when old games had the same issues.
It would be nice if devs stated which mode was the one the game was primarily developed around though.
In tlou2, it's clear that Survivor mode was the basis for everything because everything below it plays like a completely different game as resource management and scavenging can be entirely ignored. It didn't come until later but that ultrahard mode for Horizon felt like what they envisioned.

Like sure you could dive into all kinds of shit but clicking a head and watching an instant circus breakout is instant gratification. Any kind of work done by the player leading up to that moment straight up isn't popular.
Past story: enjoyable but poorly paced
Present story: pretty forgettable
Robot combat: good but doesn't encourage variety
Human combat: abysmal all round
Slightly concerned that they've exhausted all of the good stuff for the past story in the first game.
Put four or so hours into Disco Elysium. Enjoying it on the whole, been ignoring the main case and just exploring the area. Might start mixing it up since I find it's rhetoric around communism to be pretty annoying and constant. Also never cared for stories about addiction, especially alcoholism.
Had one hard crash and one game over out of nowhere which made me go through a ream of dialogue, have to get back into the mindset of saving after every interaction. Didn't realise you have to use skill points to forget internalised thoughts, so I've wasted a couple of them.
Wish you could set text boxes to reveal in time with the voice acting, assume that would have taken ages though since it wasn't originally developed with voice acting iirc.
Why do isometric games run so poorly on console?

pretty much with Hixx on everything, but out of respect for Fender and Dy I won't add anything more.
finally back to my Odin playthrough (it's WAY too long), and the combat still feels as good as ever. A beat em up that managed to win my heart. Just pure joy
Vanillaware is such a versatile little studio aren't they

Just approaching the end of Dark Souls.
I feel like I've seen this game at the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows. That being basically most of the second half. It's strange, it comes across like what I would imagine a knock off Dark Souls to be like; awful, scattershot enemy placement, thoughtless and lazy level design, etc.

yeah the second half wasn't as good, it's why Bloodborne is king. The DLC is TOP tier though so no worries.
Sekiro is GOATed too but its a straight up action game so you won't necessarily vibe with it if you like DS. Yes Perfect Blue we all know you hate it
I highly recommend you leave DS2 for last (it's bloated and will just burn you out) and go straight to DS3. It's a direct sequel to 1

I'm taking a slight break and then post-Colombia I'm going straight into Elden Ring / Dark Souls 3.
Sekiro, at least from the videos I've seen, doesn't look all that appealing to me game play wise. Very different.

good thinking! I'd wait for Elden yeah
I reckon the pace of the combat will shock you jumping from 1 to ED lol, it's a much faster series now.

I played BOTW a fair few months after Horizon. Given the way it was talked about, I expected so much more. There's one fun enemy to fight in Zelda, and that's the Lynel. Not Gannon, nor the blights, nor the moblins. Couple that with rain and breakable weapons, and the game had too many sour moments.

I know, Master Sword, but that's deep into the game.

I only disliked how quickly shield surfing broke shields because that was actually a fun way to travel around.

I had fun fucking around in BOTW because its been a long time since I bothered with a Zelda, but it says something when Wind Waker's vast empty ocean felt more populated and fun
FWIW, I liked the game, but yeah, sour.
master sword doesn't fix the weapon durability thing either. it loses energy outside of the designated areas iirc.
By Perfect Blue Go To PostGenuinely one of the best games ever to me. Exploration and sense of discovery, environmental storytelling, and overall atmosphere is unlike any other game out there.I wish I loved it the way other people talk about it, but not sure I ever got those feelings as much. I liked some of the shrines, basically all of the puzzle ones, but the big dungeons didn't do as much for me. I didn't love the combat, and I didn't _find_ all that much. I suppose that the game was so un-guided meant that I went from Divine Beast to Divine Beast and then just walked through Gannon in what was a damp squib of a final boss.
I've also barely played any other Zelda games before hand, so didn't have a lot of reverence for some of the things that others found as great easter eggs either.
By Hytch Go To PostPast story: enjoyable but poorly pacedThis is how I feel about it, but it seems pretty par for the course for Guerilla. I liked the world building and lore in Killzone, but the actual stories in those games weren't that interesting to me aside from KZ2. Horizon has an interesting world, but they choose to unveil it to you in those boring lore dumps where you just watch hologram recordings, and then the present day stuff is so throwaway.

I'm hoping that Forbidden West can do better in terms of story and actually make good on the setup.

BoTW is terribly overrated, as people talk about an ubisoft game being some revolutionary thing in vidya. However it's still better than fucking Horizon, that is for sure.

From the trailers the first question everyone has is - "why are there robo dinos in the future and why has humanity reverted to tribes?" the story is more concerned about answering those questions. GG basically built a theme park around answering that.

this is pretty accurate. The type of robos they have show looks like the are addressing variety but from what they have show human combat still looks dumb.
BOTW has a lot of flaws but one thing it got right probably better than any game I can really think of recently is that if you think "I wonder if I could._____" you probably can. Game is much more enjoyable as an open world to fuck around and mess with the systems.
