This Harry Potter fanfiction AU is ridiculously good.

Hermoine is the protagonist and the story follows a story where she is sorted into Slytherin (despite still being a Muggle-born). Discriminated against right from the get-go in Slytherin, Hermoine starts becoming colder, more aggressive, more self-loathing towards her own people, and it happens so gradually, so perfectly, and in such harmony with the character that I love the story. The writer manages to transition Hermoine from her normal self into a bully and someone who throws around slurs against Muggles without breaking character for much of anyone (though Tom Riddle is a bit weird here). It's so good.

Read the whole thing, want more. Hermione's downward spiral is very gradual and convincing. I like that Harry is still doing his own thing in the background; Hermione's adventures coexist and adhere to the established timeline. She is plausibly allowed to build up her own reputation outside of Harry's shadow. Liberties were taken with Lockhart and Tom Riddle, but I can forgive that. This rendition of Year Two is possibly more entertaining than the actual Chamber of Secrets book.
