The best deal i can find is an MSI laptop with a GTX 1060. It has mediocre build quality and screen, but good performance for the price. It's $769 before a $150 rebate.
this can't be too bad right?

By DY_nasty Go To PostMy requirements are 1) can run xcom2 and Battletech 2) internet machine 3) that let's me have 40+ tabs open in chromehonestly would avoid that if you want to run xcom. Let me see the cheapest thing i can find that will do that.
edit: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834850877&Tpk=N82E16834850877 this is twice the laptop of that HP
Here's a huge youtube playlist of what you can expect games to play like on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PL_sfYUCEg8Og7gviQyd2xUubHiBi_Pqey&v=ZoYGnUV5YQY
Should play those games OK, prob just have to turn down some settings.
another edit: seems to have some thermal problems and the GPU wont run as fast as the one in those youtube videos. But still.. it's the cheapest thing id say can get you by. I'll keep looking.

Can I interest you in a small form factor PC for all your required needs and more?
Does touchscreen interest you at all? Is 14'' too small? Can you maybe swing $530?

Size isn't everything. I like that Huawei a lot, just not sure if I want to openly support communism yet. Both of those are right in the value range I was hoping for though.

First laptop I looked at today for 200 bucks cheaper than I saw initially. Best guy
4GB of RAM is unacceptable though, and Optane is great but you still can't beat an SSD. If you get that just at least make sure you get additional RAM. Then see if Optane+HDD is good enough and if not put $50 into an SSD.
I'd still go with the Huawei but i totally understand if you don't want to support them. I keep thinking i have values and then i go out and buy a Oneplus.

Can confirm everything diehard is saying. That only has 16 GB of Optane memory so it ain't gonna cache much and 4gb of ram will not be nearly enough for your chrome tab usage.
Bought it because I got tired of thinking on it. Should hold me over til I get the desktop going
I'll buy some additional ram later

Incredible.
was just starting to think about a new build but its iffy with ps5 maybe slated for late 2020
was thinking about designing something based around 1440p ultra wide. Does anyone know if most modern AAA games support ultrawide?

Whatever you get now will be vastly superior (power wise) to the PS5. Idk how that impacts a decision to build?
Unless you're saying you might just roll with the PS5 vs a new build altogether

“The performance is lousy and there’s nothing new,” Huang said. “[There’s] no ray tracing, no AI. It’s 7nm with HBM memory that barely keeps up with a 2080. And if we turn on DLSS we’ll crush it. And if we turn on ray tracing we’ll crush it.”
’FreeSync doesn’t work’
On Sunday, Nvidia announced it would begin supporting Vesa Adaptive Sync, aka AMD’s FreeSync for variable refresh rate gaming. While some have painted this as Nvidia finally caving, that doesn’t seem to be Huang’s view.
“We never competed,” Huang said of upcoming FreeSync support. “(FreeSync) was never proven to work. As you know, we invented the area of adaptive sync. The truth is most of the FreeSync monitors do not work. They do not even work with AMD’s graphics cards.”
When asked about the negative reaction that the company’s GeForce RTX cards have received from more budget conscious customers, Huang was contrite.
“They were right,” Huang said. “[We] were anxious to get RTX in the mainstream market... We just weren’t ready.” “Now we’re ready, and it’s called 2060,” Huang said. “[It has] twice the performance of a PlayStation 4 and it’s only $350
Huang didn’t snipe at just AMD. When asked what he thought of Intel’s new push into graphics, Huang commented that Intel’s team is basically someone else’s.
Whew

I, for one, welcome Nvidia as our lord and savior.

He's right on some points about it. "The truth is most of the FreeSync monitors do not work. They do not even work with AMD’s graphics cards.”
When you take into consideration the huge swathes of cheap FreeSync monitors available, and how many of them are trash with really limited adaptive sync range and flickering issues, etc.
Like for example, a 144hz FreeSync monitor that only supports adaptive sync between 40-70FPS or whathaveyou. As an end user, I wouldn't consider that as working correctly even if it's the listed spec.
Heavily exaggerated, but still not that far off the mark.

Q2VKPT is the first playable game that is entirely raytraced and efficiently simulates fully dynamic lighting in real-time, with the same modern techniques as used in the movie industry (see Disney's practical guide to path tracing). The recent release of GPUs with raytracing capabilities has opened up entirely new possibilities for the future of game graphics, yet making good use of raytracing is non-trivial. While some games have started to explore improvements in shadow and reflection rendering, Q2VKPT is the first project to implement an efficient unified solution for all types of light transport: direct, scattered, and reflected light (see media). This kind of unification has led to a dramatic increase in both flexibility and productivity in the movie industry. The chance to have the same development in games promises a similar increase in visual fidelity and realism for game graphics in the coming years.
This project is meant to serve as a proof-of-concept for computer graphics research and the game industry alike, and to give enthusiasts a glimpse into the potential future of game graphics. Besides the use of hardware-accelerated raytracing, Q2VKPT mainly gains its efficiency from an adaptive image filtering technique that intelligently tracks changes in the scene illumination to re-use as much information as possible from previous computations.

I would bring your laptop to a shop just to find out why it "came to life". Don't give away a new LP until you know WHY the old whole conked out. That doesn't happen for no reason.
bought the RX 570 early to get the DMC5 + RE2 deal.
gonna buy the rest of the budget PC build in February after I get my paycheck. if anyone's got spare parts laying around which they can sell to me for cheap, let me know.
