How does that happen it a first world country?
Plain old corruption or the mafia?
I just hope nobody was hurt.

Sadly Italy has had a few cases of the mafia infilitrating building contracts and not giving a fuck.
By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostHow does that happen it a first world country?Because Italy is one of those countries in which there's a hardcore "say no to X" group / committee for every major public project, wanting to 'preserve history', the environment, 'money would be better spent elsewhere', etc. And when politics are involved ... good night. I could give you the (no) new stadiums example, but this is obviously far more serious.

That particular bridge has been known to be have gone over its expiration date (it should've been good for at least another 30 years, if done right, but this is Italy) for at least a decade. They've been patching it up for years, trying their hardest to avoid what everybody knew had to be done. The italian way. There are articles going back a year or two with the title 'the next bridge that's going to collapse', I kid you not.
Putrid infrastructure, healthcare in the toilet, education system forever waiting to be reformed, but according to Salvini & co. Italy's main problem is immigration. Sounds familiar, I'm sure.
RIP victims.

Will we (might die from the short trip from Trieste to the border if nothing else)?

Thanks for the insight on the bridge. Just shocking.
Ancient Italy could built shit that lasts for thousands of years, but now can't even build bridges that can get to 60 years.
