By Plasma Go To PostSokratis is almost as fast as Bellerin, wut.Bear in mind that is probably top speed, but players will rarely have the space to reach those kinds of speeds. Acceleration is what makes players seem.fast on a football pitch. Emre Can was the same at Liverpool, one of the fastest players at his top speed but moving like a tanker on the pitch.
Afternoon, lads. Has Pocket Tuna left yet?
Xhaka was managed by Wenger.
No surprises there, innit.
By Plasma Go To PostI think it says a lot about Xhaka that Guendouzi a 19 year old who only played 18 games in Ligue 2 last year can turn up and look a better player than he is.Guendouzi is been managed and coached by Emery.

It seems stupid to criticise stat websites from talking about stats. Should whoscore not provide any content for weeks?
The great thing about the touches in the opponent box stat is that Doicore can't talk about bad breaks of the ball in the box because United have had no ball in the box ;p

By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostI was told it is stupid to talk about stats after two games into a new season.I think stats are somewhat hard to normalise at this point given how different the quality of teams played so far are. That further highlights these stats though, seeing as United played two mid-to-lower-table teams
Lucas Torreira is simultaneously the slowest AND the smallest player for Arsenal? How does that happen?

Why? It shows that Guen is doing what is asked of him. It might not last, but it is encoraging to see that he is performing at a higher level than a more experience teammate(one who is often criticised)
I understand not reading to much into things this early, but you should pay attention to it.

I agree, for league wide stats. But the whoscored article I originally quoted was mainly comparing him with Arsenal teammates. Guen is the combined tackle and interception leader in the league, but that is because of the teams faced as you righly pointed out. However, it is him and not Xhaka that is leading that category, and I find that encouraging.

Why should you use stats in a Football argument?
1) Predictive value
2) Remove bias and other barriers to clear thinking
A lot of statistics are better at predicing the future, whether in terms of a clubs performance or a player's potential, than eye tests or naive statistics such as goals. For example, expected goals have a much more accuracy than just using goals or watching a player a few times.
A small amount of luck or biased thinking can easily obscure truths in football. For example, when Liverpool started using zonal marking under Benitez, they were heavily criticised for their defending on corners, as pundits perceived zonal marking to contribute to more goals. In fact, Liverpool easily outperformed the average and were much better off with zonal marking, but pundits who were used to man marking were looking for reasons to attack the new system.
Predictive value requires large sample sizes, you'd want at least 30 games for a player before extrapolating their stats forwards, for example. Smaller sample sizes do not give zero information, but you would be much more cautious. 2games, however, would be massively affected by randomness and are impossible to judge from.
Removing bias is only relevant if people are mistaken about something. However, no one thinks that Guendozi has not played a lot better than Xhaka, and no one who is not crazy believes Man Utd haven't had a wank attack in their first 2 games. Adding statistics to that conversation provides zero value, you don't need statistics because it is clear from looking yourself.

In the case of Xhaka and Guen adding stats is meaningful. A lot of people here have said in the first two games that Guen looks like the only player who is trying, something that can't be measured, but by adding stats you can see that not only does he look like he is trying hard, but that he is performing. Now I know that he has spent a longer time with Emery than Xhaka(and that was most likely why he started over Lucas) but the added stats show that one of them in the double pivot is reading and performing at a higher level level than the other. The fact that Xhaka has no interceptions is very worrying, especially against two teams that had more possession.

Look at Barca who ended up buying Paulinho who was great for them, Juventus with Evra. Pirlo doesn't count because who's dumb enough to turn him down.
