By n8 dogg Go To PostI’ve said it before, but I think Mou’s methods work best when he’s an underdog. He exhausts shit anyway, but in the past:
- Porto. Obviously not underdogs in the league but so far beyond everyone it didn’t matter. Massive underdogs in the CL.
- Chelsea. New kids on the block with an upstart attitude and a point to prove. Then the challenge of doing it again. Wheels came off when they were established favourites and winners.
- Inter. Came up against a really strong Milan side, of which they were probably joint favourites with in the wake of Calciopoli. Again, big underdogs in the CL.
- Madrid. They were up against a team lauded as the best there has ever been. No brainer.
- Chelsea again. In the post-Ferguson era, no team has been able to dominate, but after his first season the expectation was that City would continue scoring bucketloads under Pellegrini and Liverpool would only improve under Rodgers. He made some smart buys and won the title so definitively that they were clear favourites the year after.
Part of the issue is that he will treat these stars and winners, once they have done so, as if they still have a point to prove and he will do so in a negative way. Instead of Pep-style “let’s improve upon last year”, it seems to be more “you think you’re hot shit”.
This does not work at United; we are never going to be underdogs because of our wealth, our size, our history. Inter were far from the biggest club in Italy. Madrid, while not necessarily underdogs in almost every other circumstance, had the perfect storm for him to engineer his methods in.
United are the biggest club in the country. We may not be favourites, but we are never underdogs. This was part of Moyes’ failing; managing the club like he was still at Everton. Mourinho is applying tactics to us that worked at other clubs; they will not work here.
If Pep was in charge of this squad, he’d fashion something out of it. Maybe he wouldn’t play the likes of Lukaku (and that sucks for me because he’s my favourite current player), but he’d be instilling this squad with self-belief, telling Shaw he can fucking make it, telling Pogba he’s a once-in-a-lifetime talent, giving Martial and Rashford the keys to the kingdom. Mourinho’s siege mentality, burn everything down for results methods do not work in the context of the club.
I feel there are very few coaches in world football who can take winners and keep them winning. Allegri is doing a fantastic job of it at Juventus, even with Napoli breathing down their necks. It’s a rare case though. Look at how Barcelona have struggled to settle with a new coach since Guardiola left. Everyone seems to be having problems maintaining a high level. They’re still the best team in Spain, but they haven’t seen the same stability.
This is just general thoughts, I realize Barcelona and United are in very different circumstances.
By Francis Go To PostIhe truth is that we were tremendously lucky to even finish 2nd.

"They were better prepared than us"
"They tried to press and things like this".
"We didn't have the attitude to kill them, to go through the lines when we had to - we have to learn that"

By Officer_lool Go To PostBut city have been buying bloody defenders and backup options for that amount of cash. We are buying first team players.
The reason they’re buying backups and improving their defense is because their main squad hasn’t been in need of an overhaul. They’re able to keep most of their players and can upgrade a position with quality backup, rather than replace an underperforming player.
Marchisio apparently close to signing with Monaco. Probably the best he could've hoped for, outside of moving to the MLS.
Karius is crazy if he doesn’t accept that.
There’s a good keeper in there, but he’s never going to be that if he stays here.

By Officer_lool Go To PostAll I am saying is that we - as in all the supporters - need to be positive and get behind the team and manager. Its 2nd game of the season and nothing is lost yet. Booing and dissing the manager will only create a toxic atmosphere like we saw at Arsenal and nothing gained by that.He bought good players but hasn't a clue how to use them.
Give Mou some slack
He has brought good players for us
He has brought regular UCL for us
He made us finish 2nd last season and we would have really run the champions close had they not had a record breaking season.
Whatever he does.. it seems to work. Give him 10 15 games this season atleast before crucifying him.
He brought us us regular CL that culminates in being eliminated by Sevilla in two of the worst big game performances I can ever remember. Also dropped our best player and replaced him with someone who wouldn't make the 23 man squad for any other top 6 rival and probably wouldn't start for any of the newly promoted sides.
We finished second but 19 points behind the leaders. We aren't shit and neither is he.
And he bent over backwards to get Fellaini to sign a new contract. I'd actually forgotten about that.
Christ.

Anyways in 7 or 8 games we will have a clearer picture.. all it takes is to get a few wins and all is well again. Footballing world seems to have a very short term memory.
By Bungie Go To PostDominos and pappe vs the world
i'm over it all the arguing about it. the players admitted they couldn't be arsed to fight for the shirt, the fans and the manager, and respect the opponent. i feel like mourinho has tried everything with this bunch (criticism/praise, defending them, a zillion formations/lineups) to find something that works. not all of it successful but i can see what he's going for. so if he must go then he must go. while he shares some blame he has been let down by the players and the board who shoulder the majority of it for me. i will appreciate that he at least got us our best run since SAF left. i dont think our next manager will do as well but i'll hope he does (as w/ moyes and LVG) unlike some folks within our fanbase who have probably been hoping for failure so they could get their "i told you so's" in about mourinho. maybe what he's done can be built on but im really doubting the character & mentality of a lot of these players. chief among them players i'd count as my favorites on the team.
i hope they feel like trying vs Spurs. i hope they're prepared for Spurs to fight instead of rolling over for them. i don't think they will be though. but it'd be perfectly in character for them to play a hell of a game vs Spurs and then mail it in vs Burnley for another embarrassing L.
By OneTwoTee Go To PostWe're keeping Mignolet aren't we? Lol ffs.Better than a lot of backup keepers
That's an interesting view on it Domino. Mainly because I don't see any evidence of Mourinho trying a thing to help the squad. I see managers like Klopp and Guardiola improving their players whilst ours get worse. There just doesn't look like anything resembling a tactical plan in place. There hasn't been since he arrived.
Mourinho “helps” the squad by talking shit about them to the media and hoping that’ll somehow help their performances. That’s really as far as it goes. Because everyone knows negative reinforcement and insulting your workers gets them to perform better. What a genius.
He used to be good at tactical work and preparation to a game but weirdly that has stopped. Maybe Rui Faria was the mastermind all along...

Think the reaction against Spurs will tell it all. Mou has been great at getting ye up for games agaisnt the top 6. If ye dont give Spurs a good go I think its done.

We will never have a greater manager. Neither will Barca or Bayern.
The others, all still have the chance to have a true GOAT.
Mourinho was once a brilliant tactician. And in fairness we still do well against the bigger sides. He knows how to expose and exploit weaknesses in the opposition. Did a number on Liverpool last season for example.
But they're one off matches. We've no actual style of play other than brute forcing it. We don't counterattack, we don't press, we don't play slick one touch football to neat a tightly packed defence. Against the big teams we contain pretty well, but we haven't a clue how to approach sides that cede possession to us and sit back.

i dont want it to get to the stage where losign was a blessing because it was one match closer to change and winning while playing shit just elongated the tragedy.

Definitely watch it if you haven't. They put that out some months ago and it actually made me get a little misty-eyed watching that because if that can happen in Atlanta, it can happen anywhere in the US. And I hope it does.
