Kojima to leave Konami...
Kojima can pretty much go wherever/do whatever he wants right?
This basically just means he'll finally have creative freedom to do whatever he feels like.

Just posted in the other thread but Konami wasn't good enough for him and everyone knew it for a while.
Dude and his team are going to be doing big things in the future though. Honestly can't wait.

What took him so long? I hope he just takes a break from gaming and just goes off and does weird Brian Eno art installations and stuff.
By DY_nastyJust posted in the other thread but Konami wasn't good enough for him and everyone knew it for a while. The problem is that he has to build up a new team again (alot will join him I guess, but I bet that Konami offered new positions for some of them), and unless he wants to use another engine, he will have to develop new tech again.

I agree though that he could work everywhere.
Would be a great addition to each studio, but seriously he should take off a year.
By blackaceSo who owns MGS?
Konami own Kojima Productions period. It's always been a subsidiary of Konami
By PennywiseI just think that this will be one of the key things that leads to a shakeup in the industry. There is a LOT of talent floating around these days due to generally poor decision-making and management...By DY_nastyJust posted in the other thread but Konami wasn't good enough for him and everyone knew it for a while. The problem is that he has to build up a new team again (alot will join him I guess, but I bet that Konami offered new positions for some of them), and unless he wants to use another engine, he will have to develop new tech again.

Imagine finally getting away from Konami only to end up making crowd-funded Metal Gear games. It's a good thing he doesn't own any of the ips he created.

Guys like Itagaki (who hasn't produced a game in like 6 years after leaving Tecmo) Hironobu Sakaguchi (who started strong and is now making iOS android games) don't seem to fair so well once leaving...
If there is a success story of a guy leaving a Japanese company and doing well I would love to hear it..
They haven't achieved the same level of success for various reasons.
Sakaguchi was picked up by a brand that is dead in Japan. He still made great games.
Itagaki partnered up with a company that went under. Nintendo saved his ass and I'm confident Devil's Third will be at least a decent game, probably why we haven't heard anything since E3.
Platinum has done very well in terms of quality, but their games aren't making a lot of profit.
But aside from Sakaguchi, they aren't comparable to Kojima.

Kojima makes epics. Like, the literal sense of the word. That's why he's looked upon more favorably than his Japanese peers. His games are action games that are the length of RPGs with production values of a Pixar film. That doesn't necessarily make him superior, however.
Guys like Kamiya and Itagaki make straight up action games. They're all equally brilliant, IMO. IDK why people want to elevate Kojima to Miyamoto levels. Nope.

Guchi made his own path tho... Itagaki is also quite comparable to Kojima
Quality wise they have all made decent games (Itagaki aside) but have not done well..
Also Devil's Third is going to be bad I reckon....
The track record doesn't bode well, but I hope he changes it..

The thing about Kojima that sets him apart from all those other examples is the sheer scale of success he had at Konami. While you have guys like Kamiya and Sakaguchi, who are creators first and left their parent companies when they felt they could no longer be creative, that isn't the case with Kojima. Kojima not only was able to compromise his creative vision in order to have a job....he absolutely thrived in doing so.
Kojima Productions was a subsidiary of Konami, but it sounds like they were pretty much autonomous for the most part and pretty much solely responsible for Konami's games development at this point, and Kojima was the head of it.
You....kinda don't just start over I think when you've been as successful as Kojima has. and even if you do, the kinda success in the industry that Kojima has had usually doesn't happen twice to any single person.
What this means for him creatively remains to be seen, but I mean you're straight up delusional if you think he's better off. I don't even think he's leaving willingly given how we're finding out about this.

Wasn't really his fault they went bankrupt and Devils Third never saw the light of the day.
Gooch certainly wanted to be indepent again, after all he could choose the talent he wanted with the partner studios and had people like Uematsu.
I was already wondering why nobody picked up Atlus earlier, especially Nintendo and Sony were candidates to pick them up.
With Kojima there is no difference, his own studio within one of the big three would certainly improve every portofolio.
Who knows though, might be someone unexpected like ZeniMax when they picked up Shinji Mikami.
By faridmonGood. Now Konami can finally release games that are not MGS.No, they can't. They build fitness facilities and pachinko machines.

No Snatcher reboot then ;-;
Thought real talk I hope that this move gives him more room to make another VN and any other projects.
Konami lives in the same bushes as Square Enix now.
Kojima's gonna be alright. If he doesn't go indie, he'll be able to go to any publisher he wants and thrive.

Is there any real precedent for someone leaving their parent company and have equal or greater success in the gaming industry?

No, but Kojima is gaming's auteur.
If Miyamoto is James Cameron, then Koji is Steven Spielberg.
It would be a worthwhile business decision no doubt.
How likely something like that would happen? Who knows.

Man, this is one of those times I want to say something but can't. Kojima will either open his own studio or go to a japanese company. Maybe his addittude has changed towards MS but last I heard he is not happy with them or the X1.
Kojima is a hack. that's all.
Sakurai left HAL Laboratory, openly criticized the company and he's doing well.

I think he'll open his own studio out of loyalty to the staff that are leaving with him.
but I don't think he'll be making games with the kind of money he go to make metal gear any time soon

Yeah but this isn't really an industry where large publishers get into bidding wars over "talent"
I'm sure if he had an idea for a new game and a team to make it he wouldn't have much trouble finding someone willing to finance it for him. (granted it was a good idea)
but I don't really think anyone is just going to "buy him" into some high ranking development position in their company comparable to his position at Konami.

He basically moved departments...
not really. he made his own company and most recently made a game with Namco/Bandai. He never was a Nintendo employee.
i mean he badmouthed and left the former studio of the current nintendo president, it's not like it wasn't a risky move. but i know it's a different situation.
I don't see him settling for lower budgeted affairs, so I definitely think he's going somewhere established.
